The bottom line: Why would ANY city want to welcome a team that has been the worst team in baseball for decades? Does anyone really believe that Fisher is going to make the moves to improve the A’s fortunes? Back to the current issue, Fisher will not be able to raise the money to build this eyesore. The location is awful, its lot size unrealistic, no parking near it. Look for the league to push/force Fisher into selling the team to the Millers, and the team will play in Salt Lake City.
@damonamendo3 күн бұрын
That’s the key point here. Vegas would inherit the worst owner in sports and he won’t suddenly become a good owner

Vegas thinks that the A's coming to LV is going to be a money maker for the city. They don't give a rat's ass about whether or not there will be a fan base for the team as long as visiting fans come in and spend money. Doubt that is going to happen but that is the thought process.

There have been some folks suggesting that there is no way Fisher would sell the team, and maybe he wouldn’t willingly. That said, there is precedent to make him sell. Here is a partial list of teams that were sold under pressure from their respective leagues: NHL: Arizona; NBA: LA Clippers, Phoenix Suns; NFL: Carolina Panthers (and it may happen to them again), Washington; MLB Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers. If the league gets tired of this circus, they can decide to force Fisher out, keep the A’s in Northern California, and grant Vegas a team in the next round of expansion.
@damonamendo3 күн бұрын
You’d hope so. Problem is most of those other forced sales is bc the owners did something criminal
@gadflyeducator3 күн бұрын
@@damonamendo agreed. The Dodgers and Coyotes are the best precedents here. Both of those had to do with horrible mismanagement. In Frank McCourt’s case, he leveraged himself too much in his purchase of the Dodgers, and he never got out of the hole while owning one of the Crown Jewels of MLB. The A’s aren’t the Dodgers, but hopefully MLB sees the parallels with Fisher soon.

Let's say that LV falls through, and Fisher has to sell. What I don't get from the idea of staying in Sac is they'd have to start from square one and go through all the progress they've already made in Oakland. The NHL just forced the Coyotes to move because they played 2 seasons in a 5,000 seat college arena with nothing on the horizon. They couldn't do that any longer. Would MLB allow the A's to keep playing at Sutter Health with that shared arrangement and the artificial turf indefinitely while they're trying to figure out the stadium? At least Oakland had all the progress before Fisher backed out and a stadium to use in the meantime that's Major League ready albeit an old one. Would the Seminole money make the whole situation turnkey? I don't know. Bottom line is this whole mess really didn't have to happen. MLB could've forced Fisher's hand to sell by either making him pay for relocation or saying he didn't have a binding enough agreement to meet the Jan 2024 deadline for revenue sharing. One would think either of these things is a reasonable requirement. Instead, they just kept lowering the bar for him, and we're stuck with this mess, while the people who suffer the consequences are the fans, players, and the team and stadium employees.

All great points. I agree. MLB waited and watched from afar as Fisher bungled the whole thing and now everyone has a black eye

This is a perpetual tragicomedy of two failing, scamming entities trying to scam each other - Ballys and the A's...Scott is correct. Ballys will be laid to rest in Chicago, where they screwed up a pretty huge casino project at the 78...I think the "these aren't serious people" comment - if I remember correctly - came from Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman herself. The City wants nothing to do with the A's. The people getting hoodwinked are the Clark County Board of Commissioners and Nevada Legislature. The city could have given Cashman Field to the A's. It was already earmarked for improvements and had renewal grants lined up. Downtown. Easier traffic setup. And I highly suspect overtures were made at some point, but apparently that wasn't glitzy enough or close enough to dark elements of The Strip for Fisher + Kaval...Howard Stutz and the staff at the Nevada Independent have been all over this, but you can't follow this story by making phone calls. This needs forensic accountants to ply through the 10k's of Fisher and Ballys, through the legislative documents to cite "specific language", vet realistic construction figures - in other words, whether or not Ballys will actually be able to fund the infrastructure at the former Trop, and...do a realistic valuation of Gap stock (GPS), which has porpoised between $7.48 a share and $29 since May 2023. Is it a dead cat bounce? Is it a "recovery"? Is it a Wall Street Bets play? What we do know is that the price of a thing rarely correlates to its actual value in today's marketplace...Scott is also correct in that for MGM, for who there is an 80% probability that they will end up with the Trop property after a prolonged bankruptcy, land use of that property is a nonstarter as a baseball stadium. The AVERAGE revenue per square foot for a Strip casino is over $2,000/sq. ft - per day! (Review-Journal, Feb. 2024) Ain't no damn way a baseball stadium - without betting terminals at the seats, which is what I think Fisher (and by extension, Manfred and MLB) are aiming for, will make anywhere close to that kind of money...
