Excellently researched, most interesting.Let's hope for a revitalised railway in the future.

The effect of WW1 would have been significant, but the final nail in this railway's coffin was the mismanagement of the economy by the government of the day when the Chancellor of the Exchequer, a certain Winston S. Churchill, put the UK back on the Gold Standard at too high a rate. This caused stagflation as British goods became overpriced both here and overseas. And then came the Great Depression. So, don't think of this closer as anything other than leaving early to avoid the rush.

It was certainly worth waiting for this thank you. I know its off your beat but it would be great if you could use your skills on the Great Northern line through Derby. It was closed in the late 60's (surprise surprise) and linked Burton upon Trent with Nottingham going through Derby Friargate Station on the way, hence this well loved lines' nickname "The Friargate Line" It has been done before but not in your style and depth. Thanks again, brilliant and as I said, worth the waiting.

@RediscoveringLostRailways I'm certain it will. I've been rewatching some of your videos already today. At present I'm watching the one about the Somerset and Dorset joint railway. .

A wonderful video, thanks for posting. I agree with everyone who considered the closure as industrial vandalism; and certainly short sighted. I concede that Beeching was not actually guilty of ALL lines and branches, [EG; Wyre Branch to Fleetwood], But it ends there; I hope he ends in the 'Hot Place'. Many railway experts suggest there IS a case for a third North-South mainline.

Really glad you enjoyed the film!

nah the GCR railway was closed by the meanness of the former Midland men then leading British Railways who hated the upstart rival Great Central and set about its destruction, Beeching gets the blame but all he was interested in was liner trains better known as Freight liners and a shift from BD containers to international 20 and 40 foot containers

This is EXACTLY why I have my notifications on for this channel. I really can't wait to see this next video. If it is as good as the previous ones it will need to be watched on the home theater, not the cell phone!
