This video gave me an Aha Moment. I created scenes starting with the Section Plane tool and struggled to find a way back to the model, unaffected by section planes. Aha--I'm going to set up one or more scenes without sections to avoid cuts where I don't need them. Note: I believe that my error was initiating exterior elevation scenes with a Section Plane. Now I say, duh!

Did you intentionally go from naming Scene 1 to the next, naming the second scene Level 2? I like the technique. I'm new and "not there yet" but I now have in my back pocket. Thanks Aaron.

This video is a proof that SketchUp is missing a native animation feature. I.e. define a scene and then click imagined "define animation" button, make any adjustments (geometry, position, scale, etc. anything you can think of); then click "Finish" and bam, SketchUp could animate that transition in smooth 60fps. One could dream. Or is it present in latest SketchUp?

After the the last exercise, inference-locking in rotate, this abstract example was a breakthrough. My suggestion would be to apply it in a practical example. You mention shingles. Would it be germane to, say angle-modification of PV panels, for example. My brain hasn't processed what you did there as yet, as well. Thank you for the excellent stream of videos, Aaron.

The ambiant occlusion is a great feature but it is not great as the one with the plug-in ambiant occlusion in sketchUcation we should have two ambiant occlusion the first can be the one we have the other can be a pathtraced ambiant occlusion so that we get nice shadow and contact shadow ( nice black and white render like a clay render)….it will be nice because those who use stacked viewport can have a nice background that is close to a render and steel have the possibility to hilight the stuff you want …………………

Aaron shows a box pushed out the back of the wall 2x in this video, but I was never able to get that to happen on my (non-square) wall. Then @Box on the forum helped me realize I could get that to happen by tapping the option key, at least on my Mac Air. According to the hint below when the push/pull tool is activated this toggles create new starting face

I'm a newbie in May of 2024. I hope in later videos, you will go over what that "modifier key to copy" was at 7:08. Also, I've found that, after copying my box (did three) and go out of the command, when I try to select and resume the move command to make more copies, nothing happens.

Check out our fundamentals lessons - they'll cover all the essential tools and functions such as modifiers. But to shortcut the answer, its option/alt and that opens up additional functions per tool.

This video begins with "We are on our 6th week of our architectural tips and tricks play list..." -- but then you don't supply a link for that playlist, and I couldn't find it on your main youtube page (not in the playlist section there) nor by doing searches. I've only found others in that playlist by hit and miss -- emphasis on the miss. It's a great series -- why not make it easy to find?

For us slow kids in the back... Line tool > draw four lines, each parallel with the green & red axes (just a way to orient your eventual rectangle in the modeling space). Pull the square up to make a box, enter 8' to make it 8 feet tall (or whatever height you want). Use the select tool and select the top of the box. On a Mac w/ a Magic Mouse: Control click, then select Hide from the dropdown menu - the top of the box gets hidden. You can use Command Z to undo this. Now select Rotated Rectangle from your tool bar. Resume this video at 1:25. 4:49 I don't know what happened, but my protractor says the angle of my new plane is zero degrees. Oh well.

Hi Aron, i have suggestion for a video. I am practicing by drawing a car engine with most of the conponents. I think it is a good project to get good with sketchup. Because of all the tecniques needed to do it. But i can not see how to draw the timing belt with all the teeths on the strait parts and on the curved parts to match the pulleys. Can you give me a link at least if there is. Thank you, i love your way to explain. Keep going !

I notice many commenters (like me) have discovered through this video that they were (at least partially) crazy. Thank you for this contribution to keeping SketchUp users sane. Although here you say here to remain sane by tagging objects at the group level, for coloring objects you say the opposite: to color at the raw geometry level ("Paint What and Why"). So who's crazy?

All these great improvements yet still no Radius /Diameter Dimension tool in Layout 🤷♀

So i saw the same forum post and i think that its not misleading but not the full story. It appears to me that the new engine is slightly faster in the fps or video portion but the managing of geometry is slower. The video here orbits widely around the model but not through it and its not a heavy model already. FPS goes through the floor when dealing with heavy models (maybe worse than 23) and even just selecting heavy geometry (as in left click, mouse down to the right or in reverse - left click and up to the left) often pauses for me in the new engine to select raw geometry much less manipulating that geometry - which seems to be much slower. The new qt framework is a wrapper and in that way a middleman and when you have to convert into the wrapper, you lose time for the conversion but its much easier for the devs to maintain one codebase then coding natively to the hardware. Hopefully Trimble can speed up the managing of geometry or how the geometry gets managed portion of the code.
@SketchUp6 күн бұрын
I tried Test.time_display on that 5 mil poly cafe scene with everything turned on, including Ambient Occlusion..you're right model level of detail affects the FPS result. For this 'heavy model', I'm still running at 68 fps with new graphics engine....vs 7.4 with the old graphics engine.

The box/cross selection is slow no matter how big the file is. Maybe my computer is throwing it out
@johnjlopez4 күн бұрын
@@SketchUp Im probably not be being clear. Yes the viewport itself is more performant than 23, at least slightly but... Anything (the part of the code) that deals with managing the actual geometry is less performant. Your test is fast because you are away from the geometry and it was a small model and the camera was not in and around the model. Did you test in the coffee shop with textures on? What is that fps? nowhere near the first model I'll bet. Being inside the geometry and having the test orbit from inside the building crushed my fps compared to being away from the geometry and having it orbit around. Separately, Selecting geometry and manipulating geometry seems slower than 23. Box selecting is now painfully slow most of the time and well worse than 23 and I don't believe this is related to the viewport but in how the code handles geometry manipulation. In aggregate, the engine seems only slightly faster in viewport but also slightly painful where I need it... Managing and manipulating the geometry. Also, turning off ambient occlusion speeds it up a bit better but again doesn't really help with box selecting and/or managing the geometry itself. To me, it's a bit of a 1 step forward 1 step back to me so far. Hopefully Trimble can get the new qt engine under superior control...

Fun fact, the Test.time_display thing can be done in any of your file. If you want to benchmark your own files, do it like he did, open in 22 or 23, test, open in 24 with similar parameters, test again. got some old big files to go from 7 to 30+ fps. it's a good code bit to have in your head when working, sometimes you feel sketchup is getting slower, like it's running in water. the test can immediately tell you if that's the case.
