My grandfather surveyed and named the park. He owned a couple farms near the park. Our tenants were Fred and Delma Bowden. They had two boys, Lee and Gay Bowden. What a wonderful family. The flood really damaged the park. I miss the two streams that flowed a couple inches of water over the main road. As little kids, we waded in the little stream every Memorial Day.

Sadly, I have read within the past year that NONE of Iowa's rivers and streams are safe to swim in due to agricultural runoff.

I'm so happy to see the state upgrading Lake Darling. My dad was a park ranger there and I grew up on the there. He often said he would retire on Lake Darling Duck Marsh. On the south of lake, in my time, we would push a boat across the shallow end to get into the tribitaries of the the lake. Two or three inches of muck, less than inch of water, to get to the creeks. Happy to see state of Iowa putting up the money to make the park what it is today. Can they put in some more restrooms??

Well done video. I think you included all the facts I knew about this park and several more I didn't. I've driven through it hundreds and hundreds of times over 30+ years. Lots of memories.

I've been working to get to all state parks-just a few left to visit yet! You do a great job of teaching about history, people, geography, and ecology of each area. It helps me appreciate them even more! Thank you for your work in educating us about our parks precious value!

I live near here, and everyone in the area avoids this park like the plague. The hiking is pretty good, but it's COVERED in goose poo. And anything caught here is typically dead. The lakes are absolutely infested in E. coli, too. It needs all kinds of help to become the great place it could be.
