I have tried this but it doesn’t for me. I have 5v relay module as soon as I connect vcc to 5v pin, ground to ground pin and in to pin 18 which is set to out both relay lights glow. Even if I change pin status of 18 to dh or dl it doesn’t control relay at all. It always glows both the lights. But if I remove and connect pin 18 then it turns on and off the relay state. I have no idea why pin 18 high and low not controlling the relay. Any idea on this? Thank you.

Whereas I am able to control led light through the same output pin 18 but not relay.

Great video! however, there is a simpler way to program it now with a module. This way still works though :)

Nice vid, I'm surprised you didn't use a resistor of 2 mega ohm connected between them for protection purpose. Do you know if connecting a simple piezo sensor is similar? I can't find a single resource that shows how to do this and code that detects impacts. Are you still doing these exercises after 6 years ;-)

great tutorial! is there a way to only turn on the sensor once every few hours instead of constant electricity stream? the electricity 24/7 on the sensor anodes and cathodes (lol i feel smart remember some terms from high school classes) is what will make them deteriorate, not the moisture of the water (well that too, but not as fast as if electrons also are running 24/7 across the poles). can raspberry turn on and off these sensors?

Thanks for this. Ive brought the same relay however it doesnt switch from the 3v. When i drop the relay ever so slighty it then switches to on. Could this mean faulty relay, connection issue or something else? Much appreciated

Thanks for the video. I waas glad to see how to handle the raw data from the serial interface with Python. FYI an incandescent bulb may be a better load. Your soldering iron has a thermostatic switch that turns the power on and off depending on the temperature of the iron. So it will vary quite a bit. That's why the wattage changes from around 60w initially to much less later; probably the thermostat on the iron reached temperature and turned the current off. A dumb 60W incandescent bulb would be a bit more stable to do current and power testing.

I built this exactly the same as you - the green light on the relay turns on and off at intervals but it doesn't seem to power the 12V side - is it because my relay is too cheap and doesn't work with 3.3V ?

This video and the accompanying article has caused me to have a severe case of cognitive dissonance, because the transmitter part of the circuit should not work as shown because the polarity of the current flowing between collector and emitter in the (what is claimed to be a) BC547 transistor is wrong. This video and the diagram in the article shows the +3.3 volts power being connected to the transistor's EMITTER by way of the infrared LED (and no resistor to limit the current, normally a resistor of somewhere around 220 ohms is used in circuits like this) and the negative ground being connected to the transistor's COLLECTOR - he even helpfully labels the connections on the front of the breadboard so you can see that this is how he is hooking it up. But EVERY other diagram I have found using an NPN resistor such as the BC547 or a 2N2222 shows that the positive side of the circuit must be connected to the collector, and the emitter must be connected to the negative side (ground in this case). Compare to circuits at www.raspberry-pi-geek.com/Archive/2015/10/Raspberry-Pi-IR-remote or forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?p=2054578&hilit=transistor#p2054578 and you will see what I mean, of course it's harder to compare the circuits because the author of this video never shows a proper schematic diagram (if he had drawn one he might have noticed this issue). Any yet... and yet... he demonstrates the circuit working, though only to send one single solitary button press. So how can that be? My suspicion is that he may have THOUGHT he was using a BC547, but actually grabbed a PNP transistor instead. The circuit he shows would work if he were using a PNP transistor, see the discussion of the difference at electronicsclub.info/transistorcircuits.htm#types and then scroll down to electronicsclub.info/transistorcircuits.htm#ic which shows the difference in how the two types of transistors are wired. The circuit shown in this video makes sense if a PNP transistor is used, but he clearly identifies the transistor as a BC547. And while you can use a BC547 or the equivalent 2N2222 for this purpose, they will not work if you try to send current through them in the wrong direction. Now it is entirely possible that the author got hold of a PNP transistor that was mis-labeled as a BC547 and that they then sold those "mistake" transistors in a big bag on eBay or Amazon, and he got one and just started moving parts around until they worked. Or I suppose it is possible that every other site I found that used a BC547 or 2N2222 was wiring it wrong. Or maybe the laws of physics don't apply in his kitchen. Or maybe I have gone crazy in my old age and despite watching his video and looking at his circuit many MANY times while trying to resolve this incongruity, I am just not interpreting his circuit correctly. All I know is that according to everything else I have read, his transmitter circuit cannot work as he has it wired up if he is really using a NPN transistor such as the BC547 that he says he used. If anyone wants to to explain why I am wrong please do, because this is driving me crazy.
