Depends on what tip you put on. In this video I used a 1GPH or 1 Gallon Per Hour so a 5 gallon bucket filled all the way up would take about 5 hours to empty

Yeah you can make it work, I would recommend a tight seal on the lid to keep bugs out. It would last quite some time

Too much work. Just take a 3d nail, heat it red hot and melt one small hole in the side of the bucket, at it's base.
@norcalianglerhugo71133 жыл бұрын
What hole saw size was that ?
@eagle4life693 жыл бұрын
3/4" you just want it about the same size as the pipe you're going to screw into it. This will help prevent any additional leaking

I used a 1 GPH but nothing came out in over an hour. The bucket was full and the lid was off. I was testing it before I built 8 more. Do I need a different GPH? I wanted .5 but they were out of them at the time.
@eagle4life693 жыл бұрын
Big John you should get some drips right away the gph is gallons per hour. 5 gallon bucket would last 5 hours. You shouldn’t need the lid on or off, it would end up dripping either way. Double check your line isn’t clogged
@rjohnsoneod3 жыл бұрын
@@eagle4life69 Yeah, 1 GPH should empty a 5 gal bucket in 5 hrs. Basic math but it just is not working. I left it in the garage overnight with a cup under the dripper. The next morning there was less than a few ounces. I bought a different brand of dripper then you did (all they had in stock). The back of my wrapper says 1 GPH based on 25psi. I contacted the company and they said that they may not work on a gravity feed but they have heard that some people have had some success. I guess I am not one of those people.
@rjohnsoneod3 жыл бұрын
I am going to find another brand of dripper and go with a 2GPH. it should have less resistance then the 1 GPH or even the .5 GPH. That may allow the gravity feed to work properly. As a temp fix I put a piece of wire around the tubing to restrict the flow down to a small small flow. It takes hours to drain a full bucket.
@TomCrosman3 жыл бұрын
Supposed to water trees near the drip line and not at the trunk. If one has clay soil this will not deep root water them at all. Will at most soak in 6 inches. Deep root is 24-36".
@eagle4life693 жыл бұрын
Tom Crosman you’re correct 5 gallons isn’t going to help anyways for larger trees. But when the summer heat is on and you have younger plants this could be the difference between living and dying

Nice design. I couldn't get a good seal with the o-rings so I swapped them with neoprene washers which I super glued to bucket.

Instead of drilling a hole in the bucket, can we siphon the water out? I mean, 1. sink one end of the tube in a bucket (weighted down to the bottom, so not to float) 2.attach a dripper at the other end of the tube 3. dunk the entire tube in the bucket (get rid of air inside the tub) 4. grab the dripper end and stick it in the ground. I don't have a drilling tool, so I wondered if a siphoning method might work as it also works on gravity.
@eagle4life694 жыл бұрын
I would have to try, I guess in theory you could do this, just might be more time consuming on refills. Are you looking at just using a bucket to drip but don't want to destroy the bucket so you can use it later?
@MariA-nw5qx4 жыл бұрын
@@eagle4life69 Thanks for your reply. I just don't have any power tools and have a track record of botched DIY projects, so I thought if I could just plonk in the tube in the bucket, that'd be just my level of work ;-) Anyway, I read other people's comments and might try making a tiny hole on the bucket to leach the water out.
@JohnnyFYX3 жыл бұрын
Use a lighter to heat a small finishing nail or a large needle while holding it with pliers or an oven mit. Press the hot nail/needle thru the plastic. Problem solved without power tools.

Overkill. Simply drill a very small hole in the bottom of the bucket and it'll empty slow enough to saturate the area.
@eagle4life695 жыл бұрын
BigGary79 except this could allow bugs to get into your bucket. Also that is not very controlled as mine is. It also works as you said but I was looking for a constant controlled water

Interesting it is just a regular 1gph dripper, should be able to put the water out without any issues like mine did. Without seeing what it is doing on yours I am not sure why it wouldn't work. 4 years later and my buckets are still working great

@@eagle4life69 This is a null point as you're using just 5 gallons of water. The ground will get a good soaking whether you use a gallon an hour or 4 gallons per hour emitter. I've tried the exact same method as what you did in that past and it works but at the end I still prefer the simple, tiny holes at the bottom of buckets.
@BigGary795 жыл бұрын
Exactly. This method is big time overkill. The drip is controlled by the size and number of holes.

@eagle4life697 жыл бұрын
Jinx D.Clown with the current setup it lasts for about 5 hrs because I'm using a 1 GPH (gallons per hour). Bigger bucket will last longer. Reducing the size of the flow would spread the time out as well.
@PlanktoniusRex7 жыл бұрын
Looks good but seems to be a lot of work and expense that is not needed. I use three buckets and each have a 3/64" single hole at the bottom/side. I fill them at the trees, three trees at a time, and just let them drain. At first the pressure of a full bucket causes a rather quick drain but it slows way down in the last half. The dry topsoil can easily drink the first rapid half and when it starts to become saturated the flow naturally slows down as the level drops. I can water my 12 trees in several hours with very limited evaporation loss and the cost was $0 as the buckets were used and free. Another perk is that clogs are easily cleared when using compost tea. I usually put mulch over the water stream to distribute and cover the stream from air for reduced loss. Works like a charm and the trees love it once a week with mulch cover is plenty.
@eagle4life697 жыл бұрын
You could do this, my intention was to allow for a slow drip in a focused area... also with my Idea, no bugs get in because of the mesh screen placed on the hose
@RugbyNick66 жыл бұрын
Same. I drill 2 tiny holes and use the buckets for street trees on my block in DC. I don't want the my neighbors to get weirded out by it so I prefer this faster method. I can go back 45 minutes or an hour later and just pour out anything that's still in the bucket. I've already mulched the trees so there is no obvious runoff.
