Brilliant but even he does not do the optional arpeggio at about 11:30. I have only seen Van Cliburn perform it.

This is so wonderful, and such a surprise to hear John Gielgud’s old and very tender voice as Rachmaninov’s….so fitting, it was! I’ve loved SR’s music since we first got a piano when I was 13….the first piece I taught myself (of my mom’s old music books) was the first movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” sonata (C# minor), then a few Chopin preludes, but then I tried SR’s Prelude in C# minor, since I’d already figured that horrible key out. I’ve really no idea why I chose it, because there were _SO many notes(!),_ but I learned a great deal of it, badly. When I went to college at the age of 17, I learned that I had a small musical gift and that I could look at music scores and feel the music in my head, so of course that’s why I liked the prelude, even if the Great Man himself tired of it. I guess what I’m trying to say is that singing Bach chorales as hymns and other music in church when I was little, and then Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninov all helped me develop to a small degree an understanding of so many genres of music which has literally carried me through many really hard, hard times….the beauty and complexity always fed my soul, but nobody can teach love of music and art. You either can feel such beauty, or not. I’m sorry that SR was so depressed about Russia, but I hope he knows how many peoples’ lives he illuminated, as he has mine!
