I'm curious. Why wouldn't you, instead of cutting out a groove for the high carbon steel just forge weld the steel as a complete middle layer within the iron? Like a sandwich forge weld? Wouldn't that be easier to begin with as well as provide the entire axe better strength? That's just what my brain first went to. I honestly have no idea. I assume because bending the iron and steel that much after forging would risk undoing the forge weld??

Great job on forging the hammer. We need a weekly HAMMERTIME! Would love to see a big hammer making convention take place with all the best hammer makers out there. It'd be a blast.

I’ve hated the notion of a pilot hole for a long time. I have made many great hammers without a pilot. However, I have come to appreciate the idea lately. It gives more than a good chance of centering the eye. I also embrace hand forging. But I always do as much as possible under a powerhammer. Including punching the eye. I’m old. I’m mad. And I detest work that my tools can do for me. Nils just showed us excellent work!
