We see quite a bit of Dungeness Nuclear Power station in this one. 13:00 Originally this was a 6-parter so we are viewing a much cut down version. 14:15 One reason for the dogleg style 6-parters that the show started doing was that the production schedule had moved to recording 2 episodes every two weeks rather than one per week. If you look at Mind of Evil, while there are some sets that appear in all episodes there are some that only appear in episodes 1 and 2, 3 and 4, or 5 and 6. There were no free standing sets at the time so everything had to put up and taken down each time they recorded so matching the sets to the recording sessions helped.

I don’t recall people ordering takeaways over the phone in my 80s childhood - when we had a Chinese on a Saturday evening we went out to get it. From memory, I think it was in the 90s that home delivery started to become a thing. As for the story, it really steps up a gear here. The ageing of Jo is nicely done and feels genuinely quite disturbing, aided by the horrified reaction of this normally unflappable Doctor, and it is fun to see the Master forced into uneasy alliance with UNIT and taking over the Doctor’s regular role, albeit briefly. On the subject of longer stories twisting in a different direction, it all depends on how that is done and if it adds a new intriguing layer to the story, as Paul suggests. In adventures like Enemy of the World and Inferno, I think it works really well, but less so in Mind of Evil.

Fast food delivery is still a relatively new thing. When I was a kid, it was either a trip to the chippy, or, on a Sunday, a boxed Vesta Chow Mein, bought midweek (oh, the decadence!). Mates started to go to burger places in the mid to late 80s, then those chains (plus fast food places like Spud-U-Like and Pizza Hut) dominated the high street (and those new out of town shopping centres). I'd say it's only in the last 10-15 years that home delivery has become so common as to be part of everyday life. ANYWAY- Doctor Who, hey? Great episode! When spaghetti zaps back.

As far as I recall, although there were Indian and Chinese restaurants and takeaways in 1971, in the provinces the Vesta curry in a box or the frozen food brands’ versions of such cuisine was the most exotic thing people would try. Alas, the “won’t eat any foreign muck” attitude seemed to prevail. Quiche Lorraine was seen as a walk on the wild side. By the by, Salamander has been drifting in the time vortex for a long time now… is it possible he has evolved? Could the TARDIS next have a ginormous amphibian riding on it that looks suspiciously like Kermit? “He who goes ribbit ribbit?”

only around 50% of homes had a telephone line in 1970 , telephone boxes were more common in the early 1980s British telecom splt from the post office and house phones became more popular. When I was growing up most food was home cooked and the chip shop was a special treat at least until i was a teenager

I first ordered pizza over the phone when I started at Portsmouth Poly in 1987 - I don’t think I had ever heard of doing it before then, certainly not growing up in the 70’s and 80’s maybe it was a thing but as a child I wasn’t aware of it…🤔

Katy Manning commented that the transition from ‘young Jo to ‘old Jo’ was made more effective as the chosen actress, like Katy, had a scar on her face. Katy Manning had I believe to have her face rebuilt in surgery after a car accident where she as a passenger went through the windscreen - this I guess was before seatbelts were compulsory or possibly even optional. Katy Manning is a remarkable person, a force of nature. ❤️

A large amount to the production, for this story, in studio survives on originals PAL tape. Very rare~ the elements, scenes not included, practice takes - were included partial on DVD, more complete on the season Blu-ray box. With the 1st and 4th episodes being original master tapes, and 2nd/3rd were returned conversations from Canada -I believe some of the original production tape has helped with restoration of the reversed tapes.

I think Katy has often commented on how cold the location shoot was for this, especially as she was wearing a short skirt. The disruption caused by the bad weather deterred Barry Letts from scheduling location work during midwinter in future. This story does mark another step away from the gritty, adult style of Season 7, with its garish production and more light hearted feel. It definitely starts to improve in this episode, however, as the Master shows his hand and the threat posed by Axos becomes apparent. Chinn continues to irritate, unfortunately.

I do like this story, it's fun and far out and very 1971! I feel like staring at the insides of Axos too long will be like a 70s Magic Eye picture and your Great Aunt Betty's 70s sofa pattern will appear before your eyes. Followed closely by a rampaging pile of bloodied Noodles of course.

The on-location filming really goes up in quantity during the Pertwee era. It was Barry Letts' plan from the beginning to boost the budget and reallocate funds so that they could do more filming. One of the advantages of having a producer who'd previously directed Doctor Who (in "The Enemy of the World") is that he knew the value that location filming added to the program, and another reason why Letts was such a great producer for the show.

Fun Fact! At 1:57 you can see a frame of the preformance! So not only can you find the Beatles preforming part of the song, but you can also see a frame! Also you can see and hear footage from BEFORE the preformance too! It's just Vicki talking and being in front of the Time Space Visualiser makes it harder to hear and see.

Whilst not my favourite 3rd Doc tale, this for me is quintessential Pertwee and almost a perfect classic “Who”; Monsters, The Master, Unit, TARDIS scenes, space/time travel, Earth under threat , stupid government types…..it ticks nearly all the boxes. Does Pigbin Josh count as racial stereotype? 😂 regionalist stereotype? Still not got the titles and music quite right yet but yep the era of the 3rd Doctor is well and truly bedded in now.

I've not been a fan of the fact that in the new era, no Doctor has lasted more than 3 seasons (ok, David did 3 + some specials). But, that said, when you get a Doctor who lasts for an extended period, you have kids who grow up with only that Doctor, and the regeneration comes as a bigger shock...

Forgot to mention, the bespectacled, rollneck pullovered scientist Winser from the Nuton power station is played by David Saville, whom we last saw in The War Games as brave Lieutenant Carstairs, fading from the WW1 zone and hoping to find Lady Jennifer. He’ll appear again in Classic Who in another role, but no more of that now.
