How absolutely splendid to come across this interview with the latest generation of the Dawson family. I was rather fortunate to attend Sunningdale back in 1966, just a few years after Nick and Tim had taken over his co-headmasters. Of course, the world was a different place then… But very little has changed when it comes to character, sportsmanship and being a gentleman. At the time, I cannot fully say that I loved being at school, which is true for any eight-year-old separated from his parents and put in boarding school. However…Now, 60 years later, I look back with great fondness and realization that the tough lessons learned, determined my character and my English backbone, as well as the fact that I still captain my over 50 men’s football team. Technically… I was Nick and Tim’s first failure as head masters, but for that reason alone they always seem to have a special spot for Freddy. Failed my CE miserably my father was so disgusted, I was cast off to live with my mother in America. However… Everything in life happens for a reason, and all my successes, for whatever that may mean, allowed me to bring my children back to Sunningdale a few times over the years to meet Nick and Tim and see what their father was so fortunate to experience. They seemed especially touched that after Latin and Greek, their father would go to chapel, and then change, put on his colors And play a jolly decent game of cricket! I cannot underestimate the effect that Nick and Tim had on my upbringing, and that to this very day much of whom I am at my very core is based on the lessons instilled in me at Sunningdale. One of the last questions asked of Tom was what did he feel His legacy would be… It will be just as it was for Nick and Tim…a dedicated life of Service to the benefit of the boys and the school…very much as in RF Delderfield’s “To serve them all my days” Nick, Tim, and Tom are the modern day, Mr.Chips. Their legacy are demonstrated in the living proof of all the old boys that have come, and gone, as well as those that have yet to be. May he recognize how sincerely fortunate and blessed he is to be able to carry on the traditions of both the school, his father and his uncle. Here endeth the lesson. PS. I do hope that somewhere on the school shelves of trophy’s stand a matching pair of tall loving cups, hand hammered that bear only the initials AJND and TMED reflecting two brothers, two lives dedicated to Teaching, leading and educating and that good manners, character and sportsmanship are as just as important! As an ex Danes hill pupil I can say that she was probably the worst possible head the school has ever had and as soon as she came 70% of the teachers left and the academic reports fell of a cliff

Both my sons Oliver and Cameron went too Stowe , Dr.Wallersteiner was in his first year at the school when my son went for his interview, he never thought he would be offered a place when he looked at the other candidates, my son said too the headmaster he did not think he would be given a place , the headmaster asked why not , he went on too say his last school dented his confidence so much he had none left , The headmaster looked at him and said “ my teachers never thought I’d amount too anything either , now look at me “ and as my son finished his interview the headmaster whispered in his ear “ don’t let the bastards get you down “ , I’ve had so much admiration for him ever since , a truly wonderful man , and all the boys at school always referred too him as “ the Head Man “ and all adored him , still do too this day some twenty odd years later .

This is the best advice I have heard re writing a personal statement. Writing your statement so that it is genuine, says what it needs to say and relevant takes time and preparation. Thank you Bella.
