On the point of "Living beyond your reproductive years", you are tampering with the natural course by issuing HRT. Let the lady parts dry up and allow your masculine side to emerge. Perhaps you are supposed to join with the rest of humanity ,all the genders, who are not women. Maybe after you've had your children you are supposed to join the Workforce. I think Man's best friend on Earth is the Lion!

Fascinating. I'm sorry I only discovered this lecture now, in 2024! I have often read the hypothesis that a reason women live beyond their reproductive years, is because they must be able to become grandmothers. And the reason for that, is that human babies are helpless embryos for more than a year after birth at least (that's when they start to walk, but they're still pretty helpless). Women would bear a child about every other year (and many of those would die, of course) because they'd nurse for more than a year and nursing women often don't ovulate, hence won't conceive. So women would have too many babies and toddlers around to care for by themselves (since the dudes are off hunting, i.e. playing boys' games that don't do the community much good, but maybe it's just good they're out of the way), hence they must have grandmothers around. Now, if only Alice Roberts would read this comment 12 years after giving this lecture.....

misleading title says 'origins of us' which no scientist can seriously answer without making a reference to God but she did not.......she cheated as she started off with the ape, so why not start off with what scientists often claim is the origin of man and that is the big bang theory, next they claim as a result of the big bang chemicals were splashed all over the earth and life was formed as they got mixed together. .....now when has that ever been achieved on this earth.....best of luck to them on the last day.

- Perfection is relative; a shark's body is great for living in the ocean but no good in the pond next to your home. - Selection is a game of chance, not a mechanism. Effectively pro-creating and /or surviving makes larger numbers of offspring procreating and so on. - Natural selection does strive for perfection as animals ( and people ) favour symmetry and attractiveness when there's enough resources and few predators, giving us flowers, colourful feathers, antlers, movie stars, fashion models etc .. - Sexual attraction must be important in our recent evolution and a driver of procreation, it is still dominating our minds and culture today. Just look at tv, art, porn .. Symmetry started out naturally in cel division, was less important to plants and trees but became favourable again for vision and motion.
