I cringed as I listened to your story! Poor internal candidate. Transparency is the best way to go whenever possible. Great topic Danielle- thanks!

How do you balance boosting employee engagement while still getting the basic job duties done? As my agency has strived for improvement and higher accreditation, we have become more data driven and people who typically floated under the radar are now being outed. It’s more that I continue to get excuses over things not being completed, and continued efforts to coach have just destroyed engagement. I’m speaking about basic job duties like collecting copays, checking insurances, completing audits around finances, etc (we’re in a doctor’s office). Any tips around finding that balance, or better responding to excuses?

What you say makes a lot of sense Jim. I believe myself to be one of those who is easily motivated to do and be productive. I have a difficult time understanding those who don't think as I do. I also have a difficult time seeing levels of a hierarchy. I see everyone as having the same intrinsic value so I have to view this man made hierarchy as levels of responsibility as opposed to value. I get from your response that I have the power to influence those who I am in contact with. It does not come naturally to me to express myself because I feel like everyone's opinions have equal value. What makes my own so special? But as a leader, if I want to guide the company down a certain path, I need to be the one to do my job and lead. I've been trying to use my voice more. I am always surprised when people listen to me, by the way. Your response reinforces a somewhat reluctant resolve to do the unnatural. Thank you for taking the time to address my question and for encouraging my best.
