IMy first amp was a NAD 3020 in the mid 80's. I upgraded to an A&R A60 a few years later and was impressed by the bigger , more substabtial sound it made. I'd love to buy them both back again and try out the Audiolab...

I’ve owned a pair of these since about 1980. They sat unloved in a cupboard for many years as I moved on to greater things, but I recently purchased a WiiM Amp streamer and hooked these little Wharfdales up to it, along with a sub to help with the obvious lack of low down oomph that these tiny boxes could never be expected to deliver. I stuck them on some half decent stands and I was blown away by how good they sound!

Since 2 years I have 2 VHS tape recorders: one is for pal cassettes, and the 2nd one is for NTSC. I didn't buy CRT TV, it works fine with my Sony smart TV made in 2021. To make recordings, I need just a small white box attached converting HDMI signal from the satellite tuner into RCA. It's so much fun to make my own collection on tapes, in Europe there are available many free to watch channels streaming things unavailable online. And frankly, as a true VHS fan, I don't give a heck about the 8k definition lack :P

You know what that sounds interesting, converting the HDMI of the Satellite Box to RCA for the input on the VCR and I suppose a RCA to HDMI to connect to the TV. Now I fancy some of that. Might have to get a VCR up and running. Thanks for the comment.

I bought a small JVC Micro system which is currently available. A reported 50w a channel from a class D digital amplifier. The supplied JVC speakers weren't bad at all, but I connected a pair of these Diamond III and got well and truly blown away, particularly by the bass, but it didn't hide the subtle treble high frequences at all. It will be a long time before I part with these speakers!!

Hi Michael, it looks like a nice deck. JVC was a serious HiFi brand back then, specially with turntables. I have a Kenwood deck that I paid 7 Euro for on eBay. I bought it becasue it was so cheap, no one else was bidding. And it turns out it is working fine, though it was sold as un-tested. If you open it up it is a Toshiba inside. Any way, it also has headphones out without volume control. I totally not get that, specially if you can vary the line out. I would much rather have the opposite. They must have been smoking too much pod back then.
@MichaelYates

Deck was a bit of a surprise, the lack of volume control through headphones will annoy some people I think. Though I think you could be right about the smoking, I watched a documentary about Atari or Microsoft I think saying most the staff were most the time right out of it, think it was a thing back then lol

Thanks for sharing the gen, Mike! Technics and JVC made a few cassette decks with direct drive, which avoids the whole belt issue, but in my experience they're also the manufacturers whose belts seem to be immune to the ravages of time! Worst offenders for belt rot seem to be Pioneer, Trio/Kenwood, Sony and Aiwa.

I picked one of these up a few years go on eBay for £69 in perfect working order. They are listed at £200+ now so I both got a bargain and clearly this era, even bottom end, is being valued and looked for. I know I could hear and buy better, but it's pretty darn good running quadraphonic, mainly vinyl in my small basement study / studio. I find it warm,, detailed and very reliable. The loudness switch adds bass and depth and my 180g vinyl reissues of Blue Note classics sound incredible through it (driving AE floor-standers and Roxel bookshelves running in parallel. I'm very happy with it as the body in my Frankenstein home hi-fi set up. Great vid BTW.

Back in 1979 the KD-720, A2, 3 and 5 all won Hi-Fi Choice's Best Buy award so you got a good 'un there, Mike! If I remember correctly, it cost a little over £100 at the time - just out of my price range, so I settled on the KD-A2 and had no regrets. JVC absolutely knocked it out of the park with the KD-A series. They sound great, they look good and they're well made. People are put off by the apparent lack of Dolby B, but ANRS is totally compatible (so much so that JVC ended up paying Dolby royalties anyway). Super ANRS is a different system altogether, more along the lines of dbx and Dolby C, and isn't compatible. Definitely a keeper!

Had mixed success with replacing belts. I managed it on a Panasonic portable cassette player and a JVC mini system I have but failed on 2 Panasonic boomboxes. The belts were actually wrong size. My Technics cassette deck has worked fine since buying it 2 years ago. This one here worked fine but as you mentioned, when recording first couple of times it sounded distorted. I never knew that about the switches, I would have used some contact cleaner. After a few recordings, it actually sounded quite good.

Some can be a nightmare on a lot of decks, at the time they did not think anyone would want to replace the belt 20 or so years later. They are so many parts that can wear out. A lot of technics decks have the same problem make a ticking or clicking sound when playing, its a plastic cog that has a split and it and can be very hard to get to.

Good advice, Michael. The vintage cassette player market is on fire at present. Never seen prices so high. Of all vintage equipment cassette players are most troublesome & fiddly to work on. Changing belts on some requires engineering degree. So do check inside if at all possible. If it looks like a nest of wires and you can't see belts - move on unless you are really handy (and patient). Good luck!

I have had a lot of success with replacing belts on CD's and cassette decks - before buying them I drop the old ones in boiling water for a couple of minutes - the heat rejuvenates the molecular construction of the rubber making it more flexible. Michael - one minimal downside to now having a gloriously illuminated unit is I’ve got a smudge of some sort - probably some wayward glue - on the signal strength meter. Have you any advice or a video I might be missing on accessing the meters for a “quick” cleaning on a 1530? It’s certainly not bad but I’ve cleaned the entire unit so well I’d like to get as close to 100% as possible. I’m trying to work my way through the schematic today. Thank you for any guidance.
@MichaelYates
@MichaelYates 15 күн бұрын
Ahh I have not got this unit anymore, which is a shame as I could have had a try getting to meters. I take it that the smudge is inside the meter . I have a video here of a Superscope Marantz that I take the meter out of but I honestly do not know how much help it might be. Might just be undoing a few screws just a little bit and seeing if they free up the meter and seeing if the front comes off. Wish you luck kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6dyjdZmmtmvpJ8.html
@jazogby
@jazogby 8 күн бұрын
Thank you as always Michael. I was able to get the meters out by gently pushing the thin metal casing around them - similar to installing that tricky middle bulb - and it worked well enough. Now I need to find a good de-bonding agent that might loosen wayward glue that is god knows how many years old. We’ll see! Thanks again.
@MichaelYates
@MichaelYates 7 күн бұрын
@@jazogby That's good, I hope you find something to break down the glue without causing any damage or staining to meter. Hopefully it will just thin out and wipe away. Just be careful if its solid and brittle as I have snapped some off before and it took a piece of what it was on with it. Good Luck

I bought this NAD7020e a few weeks ago and I must say this is a very nice receiver with good reception and a warm sound. It makes a good impression with jazz and classical music. The capacity of the 2 power supply capacitors had decreased after all these years from 4700 uF to 3500 uF. Although this value is still within tolerance, I replaced them with younger versions of 4700 uF. When checked, these capacitors turned out to be around 5000 uF. All pontentiometers are free of cracking. The CD and AM selector switches make good contact, but when you press them you hear distortion. After pressing the buttons frequently, this distortion disappears, which indicates that the corrosion of the contacts that has arisen is gradually disappearing. The corrosion simply takes hold of the contacts due to insufficient use. So press the selector switches regularly and the cracking will gradually disappear.
