Great question! In the films Elrond invites them all to the council. But in reality, they all live hundreds of miles away from each other. But.... * Legolas and the elves from the Greenwood just happened to travel to Rivendell to tell Elrond that Smeagol escaped his prison. * Boromir just happened to travel to Rivendell because he (or Faramir, really) had a dream that called him to find Elrond. * Gimli and the dwarves just happened to travel to Rivendell to warn Bilbo that Sauron was looking for him. * and all of these folks just happened by chance to arrive at the same time that Frodo, Aragorn, and Gandalf arrived there with the Ring. 🤔 Elrond explains to us that it really was not chance at all - it was destiny. The gods or fate or whatever put them all there just at the right time to decide what to do with the Ring!! :) This is all in FOTR in the chapter called The Council of Elrond. It's in the first 25% or so of the chapter. Happy reading!

He he he he, well l might have had a bit of fun with it in the video.... 😅😅 In the book, the Nazgul tells the Dwarves that anyone who tells Sauron where Bilbo is at they will get 1) riches and rewards 2) the friendship of Mordor and 3) one of the 7 magic rings of the Dwarves. So not exactly currency I guess... But if they do NOT tell Mordor about Bilbo then Sauron will be displeased and "things will not seem so good for you" 😣 There you go. What do you think?

Dude... that's an awesome comment. Your totally right, I should have mentioned that! * Bilbo wrote the Hobbit and first part of LOTR. He also wrote the appendices, translated from books in Elrond's library. * Frodo wrote LOTR. * Samwise wrote the last chapter - the Grey Havens - and added a note in the Tale of Years timeline about BB and Frodo leaving. * Sam's eldest daughter, Elanor, wrote the paragraph in the appendices that tells the story of Sam and how he eventually attempted to sail to the West after Frodo and Bilbo. So there you go. Those are the 4 authors of the Red Book of West March. What do you think?

Nice interpretation. But I've never read this in any Tolkien text and I read most of them. Would you please mention your source The closest i can remember is that the Nazgul (possibly Khamul) left when he heard Gildor and his elves approaching
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 7 сағат бұрын
Yep - Khamul def got spooked by Gildor, who happened to meet the Hobbits and invited the 3 to a party at Wood Hall. But this actually happened just after that, on the night of Sep 24/25. Tolkien wrote it this way: **** [Khamûl] was the most ready of all to perceive the presence of the Ring, but also the one whose power was most confused and diminished by sunlight. Drawn by the Ring he goes to Hobbiton which he reaches at evening on Fri. Sep. 23rd. [On 24 September he] picks up the Stock Road, and overtakes Frodo at approaches to Woody End - probably by accident; he becomes uneasily aware of the Ring, but is hesitant and uncertain because of the bright sun. He turns into the woods and waits for night. After dark, becoming acutely aware of the Ring, goes in pursuit; but is daunted by the sudden appearance of the Elves and the song of Elbereth. While Frodo is surrounded by the Elves he cannot perceive the Ring clearly. As soon as the Elves depart [Khamûl] renews his hunt, and reaching the ridge above Woodhall is aware that the Ring has been there. Failing to find the Bearer and feeling that he is drawing away, he summons [his companion] by cries. He is aware of the general direction that the Ring has taken, He then makes a mistake (probably because he imagines the Ringbearer as some mighty man, strong and swift): For a while he had been in great fear, thinking that by some means Gandalf had got possession of the Ring and was now the Bearer; but as Gandalf passes he is aware that Gandalf has not got the Ring. **** After he is no longer afraid and organizes the attack on Crickhollow, among other things. There you go. You can read about it in Marquette MSS 4/2/36 - The Hunt for the Ring. Happy Reading!!! 😎

@thegreyhavens167 thanks man. Keep up the good work. If I may, please do one about why the nazgul retreat after stabbing frodo (people who have seen only the movies or haven't read the text from the nazgul perspective think they are being deliberately lazy). You know, the whole frodo lunging with barrow blade and calling Elbereth. Even in the FoTR book it is said that the witch king hesitates when Frodo draws his sword (wich glows redin the unseen world). It's so cool seeing the Nazgul afraid

Yeah you are totally on the right track. Here is the most accepted ownership (or at least my read of it): * Celebrimbor made the rings, and gave them to Gil-Galad - the High King of the Elves. * Gil-Galad had a premonition that he might fall in the War of the Last Alliance, so just before the battles he gave them to Galadriel, Elrond, and Cirdan the Shipwright. * About a 1000 years later, Cirdan gave his to Gandalf. There you go. What do you think?

I heard the gandalf can't die until his purpose is fulfilled because hes blessed by the god of lotr verse is this true?
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 26 минут бұрын
Sort of... but not exactly. But you are totally on the right track! * The gods of Middle Earth (similar to the Greek gods) live in "the West" (where they sail to at the end of the movies) and don't play a "direct" role in the story. * The gods are eternal spirits and can never really die or be destroyed. But as spirits, they typically cannot interact with the physical world. * Gandalf, Sauron, Saruman, the Balrog... these dudes are angels or minor gods, but living inside of actual physical bodies so they can interact with the physical world. * If their bodies are killed... they really do die! Their spirits however live on, but can no longer interact with us. Gandalf is an exception. When he dies... the One God (Eru Illuvatar... who is similar to the Christian GOD) brings him up to heaven, asks him to go a second round, reanimates his dead body, and sends his spirit back into it. Sorry for the long answer, but it's a complex subject. Does that make sense?

Definitely right! Or at least that's my read of it too. He was watching the road outside Bree... knowing they almost had to come that way. When he spotted them saying goodbye to Tom Bombadil, Aragorn snuck to them and laid down hiding in a ditch and heard everything they said to Tommy B. He then realized they were the Hobbits Gandalf had told him about, and followed them into the Prancing Pony. (What a legend!)

Great question. And to be sure, there is no way her stinger can get through Mirthil.... It's kinda impossible ¯\(°_o)/¯. Ok. This is a movie vs book thing: * Movie: she hits Frodo square in the chest with a stinger the size of a cruise missile! I'm shocked he doesn't have a punctured lung and dies on the spot from traumatic heart lacerations!!!! * Book: her stinger is a super small needle. She pokes him skillfully right in the back of the neck. So there you go. Sting in the neck ... Where there isn't any Mithril armor. 🙂. Unless the Mithril coat was a turtle neck? 🤔🤣🤣🤣

What do you think of this: (I didn't write it) The lost love of Legolas: the human girl whom Legolas fell for when he was very young (as of elf standards) who died in a battle she shouldn't have been fighting. Legolas held her in his arms as she was dying, (not even elven magic could save her) he thought he shall surely die from a broken heart - like many elves do when they lose their one love - but for her last words to him were "Live for me Legolas, my Love." And so he lived and became widely known for being in the Fellowship of the Ring, and taking Sauron our of power.

Why did the spirit of sauron endure after the distruction of numenor when there was no ringas we can see in the lord of the rings when the one ring is destroyed sauron is destroyed with it and if sauron is a miar and his spirit endured several times why didint the spirit of saruman endure too since he also is a miar
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 12 минут бұрын
This is an awesome question but some of these answers are a bit... involved. It will do my best!! 🙇 Ok, here are the basics: * the Maiar are eternal spirits that existed from the beginning - and so can never truly "die" * as spirits, they typically cannot interact with the physical world, only the spiritual world * so some of them they make bodies for themselves to inhabit so they can be in the physical world * if their bodies are killed, the spirit lives on but can no longer interact with the physical world * losing their body is super traumatic... and hurts their spirit... and weakens them for a long time * typically, they would go to Valinor and get healed and recover, and maybe one of the Valar would even make them a new body Ok, so what happened to Sauron after LOTR? * Sauron was NOT killed technically went his Ring got a lava bath... he was killed when Barad-dur crashed on his head 😅 * His spirit lives on, but is soooo weak after the loss of his Ring that he can never again be strong enough to build a new body * So he wanders to this day as an invisible spirit, unable to interact with the world. He is angry and frustrated, but ultimately harmless and irrelevant. What about Saruman? * Saruman has a similar fate - without his body his weak, weak spirit wonders the earth alone and unable to be perceived by anyone. * Saruman looked towards Valinor in the west when he died.... asking to come home and be healed.... but they rejected him and blew his spirit away 😔 Lastly, how did Sauron survive the Fall of Numenor? * His body was crushed/drowned but his spirit survived. * His Ring also survived, keeping more of his spirit safe and sound. * But he was still strong enough to eventually build a new body and reinhabit it. * It's only when his Ring was destroyed that he was so weak... he could never again make a new body. There you go. Sorry so long. What do you think? Does that make sense?

Good comment. I LOVE the idea that he is secretly protecting them the whole time! But honestly, he was pretty far away at the time :( Aragorn was watching for them on the east-west road closer to Bree. But there could have been other rangers there.... they were secretly protecting the Shire at the time. Khamul convinced himself it was Gandalf - that G had taken the One Ring and was now super powered! He saw G ride by two days later, and realized his mistake. So it wasn't G either. It's a mystery 🤔🙂

Why did Gandalf not tell the fellowship or even gimli about balin’s fate in moria
@thegreyhavens167

Quick answer.... G didn't know. Gimli actually knew the most. He was getting regular updates from Balin for years, but then the updates stopped. He is the one that told Gandalf that something terrible might have happened to Balin. So G didn't know about Balin's fate, didn't know about the Balrog, didn't know about the Watcher in the Water - he was walking into a lot of unknowns!

This is incorrect, elves are long-lived and will live as long as the world lasts. They don't need the rings to make themselves "immortal", they need them to "protect" their kingdoms from the advance of time.

If you want more info on this one, read up on the "fading of the elves". Should find a lot online, but I think it's also discussed in Morgoth's Ring. It's good stuff! Your right, the elves spirits burn as long as the earth itself! But their bodies do not. Especially those living in Middle Earth. Their bodies start to fade over time because they are taking in food and water and air that is corrupted. So they are using the Rings to preserve their lands from fading -> which in turn keeps their bodies from eating/breathing fading stuff -> which keeps their bodies from fading -> so they won't have to return home to Valinor. What do you think?

But in a prophecy, doesn’t “would not,” mean “will not,” which basically means, “cannot”? If it’s true that he WOULD not be killed by a man, he could literally hire 500 men to kill him, stand defenseless in a room with the rest of them, and somehow they wouldn’t be able to do it.
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 2 күн бұрын
🤣🤣🤣🤣. I mean your entire thought is dependent on the idea that prophecies are true and real and have power and trump free will. It's unclear if that is the case here or not. Tolkien lifted this idea directly from Hamlet. Shakespeare had the exact same thing ("cannot be killed by a man born from a woman"). And the same way it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the prince is killed. They ask the same questions: does the prophecy really hold power? What do you think? Great comment btw

Great question. Here is my read of it: The Ring puts Sauron's mind in direct contact with the other Ring bearer's minds. Then he can totally dominate them at a fundamental level. But since Sauron lost his Ring, he doesn't have this ability. He's not in contact with them. That's what makes it so gutsy to send Frodo to Mordor. If he is caught, Elrond, Glady, and Gandalf will lose their identity and be instantly enslaved. That's a lot for them to risk!
