I got the chinise one and have no trouble... we use 140 octaboxes, some silk. Maybe the "quality" is important when you are gonna be very demanding, but for most of the small photographers and videographers is enough. The prices in the equipment label "pro video or photo" are just insane sometimes. I dont´t regret my buy.

This video is one of the most game changing things with my cosplay photos. I shoot a lot of photos on 35mm film at conventions and using a flash has opened the door for me to try out all kinds of lower ISO film stocks. For instance I shot a roll of ISO 25 Black and White film with the flash and just wow, the detail combined with the softness of film.

Depending on the size of the group, multiple flashes with large umbrellas evenly spaced. Set your exposure so it looks okay ambient, and use your flashes as fill, so if you miss the edges it's not too bad.

Thanks, a useful and clear look in subjective detail at a potentially boring, but near essential item. I liked, subscribed, then went on to buy two Manfrotto Avenger C-stands. I'd been considering for some time. On compact stands I'd had prior experience with Manfrotto's and bought several different models. Also used different cheapo Chinese stands (some dreadful, some ok). I was very tempted by Amazon's cheaper Chinese C- stands or branded Chinese Newer models. All looked pretty solid vs my 'travel-friendly' stands. Then I remembered the mantra about 'quality persisting, long after the cost was forgotten' so went and bought a couple of Avengers with removable turtle bases. They are a tad shorter (useful) than some others (eg spring damped Newers) more expensive, but in the context of owning for life, totally worth it. Absolutely no regrets. I will likely buy more in time too. On mass (spec sheets I have read), Avengers seem a similar weight to Matthews and lighter than some Chinese 'no name' examples available le in UK. Anyway, once I reflected that the total cost of an Avenger set was modest vs some of my high-end lenses, then it became a much easy choice.

Thanks for the review, however, I already bought an X-Drop Pro. The X-Drop Pro for 8x8 foot frame is a much better stronger system than the 5x7 version. I also bought the 8x13 X drop white fabric so the backdrop is not just vertical but you also can add 5 extra feet on the floor, people can stand on and it functions like any other backdrop. If you want to lower the top, just angle it more to the back. If you want it closer to the wall, just shorten the back leg and push the back leg closer together to front, so it is only 3 to 2.5 feet from the wall and not 5 feet from the wall as stated in this video. (Westcott also says to do this in their assembly video). These backdrops might be more stable indoors, than using outside with wind. If you get the X-Drop 8x8 system, you can also click the top 2 legs inwards so it fits 5x7 backdrops. If you watch the Westcott tutorials it is easy to do. So now you can buy both 8x8 backdrops and also save on 5x7 backdrops which are nearly half the price of the 8x8. I have a few at different sizes. Great review overall, just missed a few points. Otherwise, your points all have merit. All in all a good portable solution but some things to keep in mind.

Heavily biased against X-Drop in general. The Pro version is 8’x8‘ - why don’t you even mention that? And if there is not enough depth available, why not lean and tape it to the wall? And how many rooms are actually lower than 7‘ ? There is way tool much emphasis for this latter scenario in your video.

I have a bunch of Kate 8x8-foot and 8x12-foot fabric backdrops. I bought the X-Drop Pro and punched grommets into the Kate backdrops...they work fine. You're an idiot with regard to adjusting the footprint of the X-drop. When you move the rear leg forward, you're obviously suppose to lengthen the rear leg at the same time...that was clear just from watching your own video.

Most of those issues were resolved with the X-Drop Pro. More durable (and hardly heavier) and the 8-foot wide backdrop is suitable for video. This is an on-location tool, so portability, size, weight, and set-up time are huge factors that cannot be underestimated. As others have mentioned, the footprint can be shortened substantially, and it takes only a bit of DIY capability to add grommets to other backdrops.

One question - will two 42inch octas be enough for groups of about 40 people indoors, using 250w lights (think Profoto B10X) ? Consider the photo is shot at the sync speed, so ambient light will effectively be zero

Based on this brilliant video, Savage appears to be notably more versatile. However, in your opinion, which brand offers greater stability and durability when subjected to harsh conditions, particularly in gritty areas-Savage or Avenger?

I honestly haven't road tested the savage as much as the Avengers. Bought it during COVID and haven't traveled as much with it. I've had the Avengers for over a decade. I will definitely update if I find anything worth saying, but both seem sturdy.

I liked the popup, but noticed that it didn't reach the floor. What happens when you do a full-body shot? It doesn't seem like you would get shoes in there and would need some sort of white extension taped to it? Or is there an extension bar at the top to clamp over the feet, touching the floor?

Pop Ups are for headshots and up to 3/4 body. You're only getting shoes if you roll out a seamless.

@@NOMcreative - Oh, ok. A "fly-by-night" company is what you meant. Neewer has some products that are certainly worth while, but being a Chinese company they certainly have many short comings. With that in mind I have a couple Neewer adjustable clamps that attach to light stands and hold things like foam board to flag light. I also have a couple small LED lights of theirs (CN-160 & CN-216) that I still hang onto. A Pro Videographer friend of mine has a few Neewer C-stands and he told me they get the job done.

Definitely not. I have had problems with it keeping tension long-term, and I wouldn't do wall to wall. You can get a "wall spreader" if you can't attach in, or you can mount this vertically and run a pole on it via clamps.

You missed the fact that you can cut that footprint in half.... that's what the adjuster nut on the centre column and the flip-lock on the back leg are for - you shorten that column, and shorten the back leg, and it goes nearly vertical. I believe Westcott's specs say the minimum setup footprint front-to-back is 20" when you do that.
