As a disinterested listener to the commentaries from the three of you (plus the musical extracts) I wonder that were it possible to listen to the complete (four) works in a future video then I and possibly other listeners would likely be pleased. Whatever transpires, it is to the credit of Pep Organ that the interest shown in the competition has increased. This reveals something which many of us forget in the bizzarity of the modern world i.e that there are still some young people in society who are imbued with vision, skill and potential who want to develop their existing knowledge of composition by writing music in certain styles and by so doing learn the discipline of composition through historical observation. The thrust of what you are all doing to foster all this is to be commended so my hearty good wishes to you all - and even the rabbit.

Wow, what a fantastic result! I love the relaxed "here's the results" attitude with no pomp or ceremony. Not that there's anything wrong with pomp and ceremony, as it is par for the course for most musicians, LOL. Should I assume that the top 3 winners' pieces will be performed here on the channel? A suggestion for individual videos could be prffiles on the winners. These are just suggestions. I am now going to reward this channel for its good work with a financial contribution using the Thanks Tab.

Virtual organs can be so well done as to be nearly indistinguishable by experts and well beyond the capacity of most listeners. The major improvements going forward are in speakers and the shaping of the acoustic environment. I have listened to and played electronic , digital and pipes in a variety of settings for decades so my opinion is far from a casual one. Pipes are an endangered species due to maintenance issues and costs that are becoming increasingly difficult to support. That said, I love Pipes but they dwell in the real world as do we all and steadily over time locations with pipe organs have diminished in number. It is a lamentable fact that many pipe organs (Theatre in particular) have spent more time in warehouses than installed and played. It is difficult to argue over the acoustics of silence because then you literally can’t hear the difference between a playing instrument and one that is out of commission - there are too many “parked” pipes.

I’m just not convinced by the sound of Allen organs. I have degrees in music in organ and voice, and Allen always sounds algorithmic and 2-dimensional to me. I’m not opposed at all to digital organs. Now, as you say, and my organ professors always said- The room is the most important stop. You’re playing in a great room, and that Allen sounds much better because of it. It’s obviously a good installation. The best digital organs IMO are Phoenix from Peterborough, CA, and Walker (great, insanely expensive). We have a 6 year old Allen at the organ where I am full-time that my predecessor chose, and it’s an unfortunate installation. But to me, you can never beat a real pipe organ as far as sound. Great video!

I'm interested to know why you call it a French overture? Is it a sort of musical nickname? It was used at the end of the Queen Mother's funeral in 2002 and at my wife's 4 years ago. Beautiful piece.
@Quince828
@Quince828 6 күн бұрын
@@michaelmontagu3979 it denotes a particular style of composition that Bach was using in this piece. So yes it’s a type or if you will a musical nickname.I’m not enough of a musicologist to know what French court it derives from but perhaps someone else might know. I’m just a humble organist who has always enjoyed hearing and playing it. As an aside the fugue that follows it (the equally famous so called St. Anne) is totally unrelated to the prelude. It just happens to be in the same key. Isn’t history fascinating.

@Quince828 History is absolutely fascinating. As it happens I'm a historian and writer. Thank you for the explanation. I would imagine that it was the court of Louis XIV, who was a great patron of musicians. Bach would have been about 40 when Louis died, so I suppose the connection is there. Although Louis XV liked music too. You shouldn't say just a humble organist. Isn't the organ known as the King of Instruments? One of my favourites.

Wow, that's amazing playing, Titus! Also, I'm utterly fascinated by how you operate the organ by seeing everything in the close-ups. The concept of coupling the keyboards is completely new to me. Is the coupling an exact mirror only? Can you couple it so that another keyboard plays whole triads? Can the slave keyboard be a third up or a third down? Can you couple all the keyboards to each other? I'm so curious to know more about this, Titus!😆😆😆 Was the audio going into the mic in view, or was that for you to announce or both? How did you do the audio? It looks like 3 cameras and some extreme editing, LOL.🤣🤣🤣. Very well done, indeed.
@peporgan
@peporgan 17 күн бұрын
Thanks Robert. Video and audio was handled by the venue, all I did was edit it. The mic visible was just for me to speak into. Coupling is just at the unison generally, though some organs have octave couplers too. Haven't heard of a triad coupler, though I suppose you can get that sound effect with the 2 2/3' stop.

Hi Titus - can you help us understand why you are so convinced the new 12.9" iPad Air will support face gesture page turning in forScore? My understanding from forScore is that this feature (only accessible on forScore Pro) requires a true depth front facing camera - and one of the key differences between the new iPad Pro and iPad Air is that the former does have a true depth front facing camera whilst the latter does not. (Hence facial recognition possible on the Pro, whereas its touch recognition on the Air). This is really key for a lot of us who would really value this feature on a 12.9' screen - but cannot justify the iPad Pro price - whereas if it really is going to work on an iPad Air there is at last a more cost effective option. Please clarify!! Many thanks Chris
@peporgan
@peporgan 22 күн бұрын
Hi Chris, I was told by someone that they can page-turn on their iPad Air. So I'm guessing the true depth feature is not essential to the page turns, it's more of a FaceID technology. I need confirmation though on this. If you want to try, Apple does always have a no-fault returns policy, so you could try the feature to confirm it works.

Hello. With pedalling, it's important to keep your feet close to the keys, so you don't lose your place. Practice playing intervals in the pedals so you build up muscle memory.

I'm of an age where I really like large text. If I pinch and zoom to see my music better, does forScore adjust the music to another page? Or do I need to enlarge the music before scanning? This was a great instruction on how to use the iPad for music. Thank you!
@peporgan
@peporgan 28 күн бұрын
Forscore can crop the borders off pages if you want it to, even after you've scanned them in. It works quite well and zooms the finished result in. You can also pinch and zoom to see the music better, but then you'd have to zoom out to conveniently turn the page.

Very useful advice. I’ve tried using my seventh generation iPad with scanned scores but it’s too small to read. The larger screen Pros are far too expensive for only using for music. The prices here in Canada are similar to yours in Australia. Now that I know what to look for it sounds like a refurbished M1 or better would be adequate. Thanks for your insight and research.

In the past, when my battery no longer lasts a day, I have had it replaced with a 3rd party one because it was a lot cheaper than going to Apple. Every time, however, the new battery never lasted as long as an Apple battery and then I discovered the 3rd party ones didn’t have the same charging capacity as the Apple ones. Last year, my 2020 iPad Pro was only lasting a few hours so I decided to get a new battery from Apple and pay a bit more. Imagine my surprise when Apple told me that they no longer replace iPad batteries but for the cost of a new battery ($200), they would completely replace my iPad with a new one (same model and size). So now I have a brand new 2020 Pro for $200 so won’t be updating for a few more years.
