There was a version of the Prisoner series done for radio (BBC Radio 4 Extra), which actually seems to do a better job of telling the stories, than the tv series, with some fantastic sound effects, music, and great voice acting. Well worth trying to track down.

One thing I learned about The Prisoner from watching analyses and reading comments: Everyone comes up with a different meaning for what it means. None of these are wrong. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it. And finally, it makes you think more deeply. There are so many parts that don't fit together without thinking about them. You quickly learn that whoever is in charge is doing psychological experimentation on him, but then realize at some point that he is doing the same right back. Episode after episode, hou see him defeat Number 2, and forcing a replacement. The more deeply you look, the more clues there are that you don't necessarily understand everything. My personal feeling is there is no true meaning, and it is written to enable us to reveal our own interpretations. All interpretations are correct to some degree, but all are incomplete.

'I'm not a number. I'm a free man!' Just like 1984, The Prisoner is a great sociological study, and both have become real in one way or another. Full of clues on how people work, what make them tick, and how power works, and the illusion of 'sides'. Be seeing you!

Great analysis. MacGoohan gave hints about interpretation before he died, but I think the most compelling case is that everyone is their own jailer. The fact he sees his own face when he confronts no.1 is massive. Also, of course, there is the exchange that opens every episode. No.6: "who is number 1?" to which No.2 replies "You are number 6". If not for the intonation, it could have been read as "you are, number 6". When the last episode aired in England, it caused an almighty row because lots of people missed 'the reveal'. It's all there, the meaning. MacGoohan wanted people to think for themselves and interpret the ending as they saw fit. But it really isn't that hard to work out. He got out of the village, and returns to London. BUT the implication is that the whole world is "the village". MacGoohan's series uses allegory to tell a bigger tale regarding individualism vs. collectivism, the right to protest, the right to speak one's mind, the right to resist etc.

Thank you! You are right, and I agree with your idea. The Prisoner is a much more important series and can be seen having those theme too. And the idea of you being your own jailer, is quite subtle and makes a great impact on the viewer, because you don't expect. I like the show is letting the viewer gets all that and is not told at the end what everything means. Thank you for your view and for your idea!

To me you could see from when he first saw her at the beginning Connery's character understood there was something off and criminal about Marnie. It is the extremely rare person who will actually realize something in their past made them this way and try to help that person. Connery was cast against type and for this reason it was hard to see and believe he was always trying to help here. This was a great choice as it shows our first instincts about someone can often be wrong. This is sometimes called doing shadow work, examining your life and being brutally honest with yourself and then taking action and fixing that problem. Often one needs to face head on the feelings that caused the problems in the first place.

This is exactly the same response I am getting to the present day when I try to find out where my overseas package went that UPS has promised me to deliver for the last 3 weeks.... UPS says we want information we need information your package will never be released to you without the information... Checking my tracking number every day it is said that I will receive my package by the end of the day at 7:00 p.m. play in everyday UPS fails to deliver by the deadline.. there is a website that allows you to track your package thank God I had a tracking number.. this only made things worse as you never get the same agent twice transferring you to artificial intelligence that has all the answers so they believe as a virtual assistant ask you their questions as you are not allowed to ask your questions and then they virtual assistant only allows you to choose from their answers yes or no and if you can't answer with a yes or no they hang up on you if you join their little club you will get further assistance from a more smarter artificially intelligent virtual assistant who will ask you more complicated questions of the same information agree or disagree artificial intelligence has never been never will be able to ask proper questions with only the two answers of yes or no there is always a maybe embedded in their programming as I know this for sure for experimenting with and learning as it was my cousin over 40 years ago who invented artificial intelligence that you will never find his name printed anywhere as this government top secret anyway UPS claim my package was held by US Customs as of course it was because you can hardly ever get through to US Customs to verify that so for the last 3 weeks I have been trying to contact UPS authorities in US Customs authorities for true answers why my package is delayed today I finally got through to Louisville Kentucky Port of entry and that man was a real man I suppose because they're very good at AI mannequin real people never has been recorded your package being confiscated by US Customs so that was a total lie from UPS and when I went to my local UPS and talk to a real person in person he told me that his records show us customs of Louisville Kentucky holding your package for further information they want information information I'm not joking folks this is what I was told for the last 3 weeks I've been chasing a ghost from the US Customs department and the UPS company that have been apparently hiding my package this would make a better Syfy show than anything you've ever watched I was asked over the phone which of course I cannot prove it's my word against my word I was told the package is being held because they do not have my social security number again US Customs deny ever asking for one my local UPS said you misunderstood as we have never asked for anyone social security number UPS claims they sent me an email information they require information I am holding and will not respond no one know where has ever asked me to give the social security number of my own in other words I have not been provided a way to do this US Customs office has sent me messages and sending messages to UPS still waiting for my social security number to release my package that is my fault I have never allowed anyone information is the information the information of information I'm no webmaster but I am savvy on a scam and how it operates so a certain organization in Europe can I go some goods into my package and we're waiting for the other end of that organized crime operation to unload my package reseal it and put it back in the system pretty smart aren't they and if that's not a crime syndicate I just gave you the instructions on how to smuggle illegal contraband into the United Statesl but there is a much easier way than involves no red tape I have nobody in charge whoever has to know.... All you have to do these days is hand your package to one of the 20 million Invaders who are coming across right now of all of our Southern borders and are US Customs service immune and do not have to answer to any authority and can walk across the border with no interference from any authority of the USA... If you have a lot of packages that's going to go on for quite some time I highly recommend the Colombian cartel permission but once you secure the security of the cartel you'll never have another problem again

I've been a fan of The Prisoner since it originally ran in the late 60's, mainly because of its 'strangeness', but I'm not surprised it didn't get a second series. It was an intriguing story but it didn't really develop and the ending explained nothing. All we got out of it in the end was that we are all prisoners, no matter where we go. A great show, but basically the same in each episode.

Hi. When you say "Watch the second series," do you mean the second SEASON? But I thought there was only one season of Danger Man. Wasn't it distributed in the US as "Secret Agent?" I think the theme song here was sung by Johnny Rivers. This version has a hint of connection to "The Prisoner." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLpllKd3rbHFkZc.html

Hello. Yes, I meant the second season of Danger Man. The show was named from the second season as Secret Agent in the US and had that theme song you gave me as an intro. As for the reference to the Prisoner, I have to pay attention more to the story. And in the theme song, I dont know, why they put the reference. Maybe the show had a re-run after the Prisoner was aired and the studio made the connection with that show due to the audience recognizing Patrick McGoohan? I do not know, I have to verify this. Probably the shows are connected, I am not sure about that. For the moment, in the first season, yes, there are similarities between John Drake and Number 6, and Number 6 can be more experienced, while John Drake is more young and dynamic, but there I see no connection for the moment between those two characters. As for why it was renamed in the US, I don't know for sure. From what I can see, the show was named differently in other parts of the world. It was the producers decision during the production of the show, probably due to some censorship rules, or wanted to be promoted differently for other audiences... Who knows...

I saw the series when if first aired in the sixties. To me as a child then, it was an enjoyable adventure series that had an annoying, inexplicable ending. As I grew older, my reactions to it developed. At times I thought it could be seen as a portrayal of existentialist alienation. At others, it seemed to operate almost on a religious level, asking all the profound questions: What is this place? What's the purpose of it? Why am I here? Who's in charge? I think ultimately it's sign of the quality of the series that it can be viewed in so many different ways. It resonates with people at different levels, just as real art does.
