I remember several years ago when the episode where Brian got hit by a car and died had aired. It made news articles because people were really upset they killed off Brian (at the time..) Seth MacFarlane was talking about wanting to end the show because he felt it lived out its lifecycle and didn't want it going on in perpetuity. In my opinion they should have.
