The DR200SE, especially the face-lift model, could have benefitted substantially from more aggressive stock rubber from suzuki as well as a better aftermarket. Could have killed the 150/230 market with its street legality.

I had a xr650l back in the 90s beat it to death then sold it what a mistake, I wanted together another one but couldn’t find a good deal in my area, finally the local Honda dealership called me and said they just got a 2024 in , I went right down there and bought it I’m keeping this one forever, I got it right where I want it geared handle bars, exhaust, and rejett the carb , perfect now and loving life, I own street bikes and dirt bikes but I’m happy with my xr650l, good luck with your new bike

No chance I want to sit on a Chinese bike, this guy must be joking, remember he sprays w-40 into the front disc brake. Taiwanese bikes are much safer. But I stick with the Japanese bikes for my safety. Do Not ride on Chinese bikes.
@GreaseAndGravel
@GreaseAndGravel 9 күн бұрын
Safety has many variables. These bikes were safe enough (maybe not their riders). We had 650cc Japanese and German bikes which would have not been safer due to higher speeds that would have been possible. I would do it on a Chinese bike again, mostly for parts availability.

One thing you didn't mention is protection. I've been riding motorcycles for years and got my first scooter, an Xmax 300 last month. Many years ago I was hit by a car. It hit my kinda sideways, first hit me in the front and then smashed my ankle between the bike and car. If I had a scooter I'm pretty sure my ankle would have been fine. And if you go down and slide on a regular motorcycle, you can get serious injuries while you are somewhat protected on a scooter.

All have pros and cons…I’ve owned multiple drz’s sm and s models over the years and enjoyed them all but they are still turds and heavy compared to more modern bikes. Same for the xr’s - owned 2 and sold them off similar to the drz’s in many ways they are very much alike with each being better in certain situations. I find the new Crf300l to be a great bike now but it of course lacks the power on the highway but great all around bike for the money

I've owned various Honda XR models over the years and have a 2002 XR650L that I bought new. I have gone through 2 OEM CDI units. They are a known issue of this model. The battery box placement subjects the CDI to vibration and impacts from rocks from the rear wheel. As a result, the soldered connections inside the units can crack and separate. Both of the failed unit's first symptoms presented as an intermittent no-start issue. The second unit failed when I was 40 miles away from anywhere out in the mountains. I had a new spare with me so that got me home. I now run an Ignitech unit (about $50.00 more than an OEM but a much better unit. It is also programable. Another thing I have learned (the hard way) is never to store ANY BIKE with fuel in the carbs. Modern fuels contain a lot of alcohol, which can wreak havoc on the internal (plastic and rubber) parts of the carburetor. Also, if you don't run the engine for months (like over the winter) the fuel can turn to varnish in the carb. The next time you go to start it, you will suck up that crap and plug it. Now EVERY TIME I am done riding for the day, and park it, I turn the fuel cock to "off" and let the bike idle until it dies. then turn off the key. Hope this helps someone, CHEERS!

I was seriously considering an older GS, but a few things convinced me to go with a Japanese bike (Super Tenere). 1. Frequency of valve adjustments, they are easy, but too frequent for an adventure bike (if you ride a lot, you'll be adjusting the valves at least twice a year, 40000km on the Yamaha and most report they are still in spec at that mileage). 2. At around 100000km, plenty have had their clutches replaced (you have to split the bike in to and it's thousands $$$) 3. Fuel gauges stop working, just like the ABS, fuel gauge is a couple hundreds to fix, but ABS can be thousands. 4. Drive shaft failures are not uncommon on the higher mileage ones. 5. I went to try a 2006 with barely 50000km on it, the boots on the drive shaft were dried up, all the plastics on the bike were dried up, I've never seen a bike with so little mileage age so poorly. 6. 4 buttons for the indicators is insane, and hard to get used to if you ride multiple bikes. As a tall rider, this bike was really on the top of my list, but at the price they are selling used, if you have one of the things above fail, it ends up being a very expensive bike not worth any more. I'd probably buy one new, and sell it when it's out of warranty :)

Chain and sprockets aren’t cheap either, drive shaft is every 80k, chain far, far more often, in the end i doubt which one is cheaper. A clutch plate is rather cheap, maybe 100 quid.. ONLY abs1 is a problem, from 2007 on no more issues and after 2007 if just if, cheap to repair… i prefer bmw indicator system, me myself can not get used to the “japanese” system, so it is a personal issue/taste i am going to the right, so my right thump pushes, left, my left thump, easy as eating chips.. frequent valve adjustment? No… there is an bmw advice on a certain mileage, but mine keeps being ok…. Don’t believe everything on the internet… if I sneeze 2 times and google that, i am dead tomorrow 😅

Anyhoo, I swear I could go forever on a tank of gas with that bike. I ended up selling it and getting a XR650R. After uncorking the XR650R, you have a rocket.
