I have one of these in Canada but it has left hand drive so it must have been imported back when it was new. Plan on converting it into an EV.

That would be neat. For about 2 months I was trying to put a 3cylinder kubota diesel in this. Finally realized I'd have to hack many things up. So back to the standard engine it is

As you probably know, parts, either new or used here in the UK are plentiful! The sump, aka "oil pan" are 'ten-a-penny', well not these days, but cheap, the biggest cost will be shipping to USA. Bodyshells are about to repair the tree damage, but in the UK such damage would mean that the car would be converted to a "special". Usually a sports special, but it could be made into a "shooting brake", aka 'station wagon' or a 'woodie'. The fuel tank will contain 5 gallons, this is imperial gallons as defined by UK's measures, which is bigger than a US gallon. 1 UK gallon is 4.54 litres. I am guessing your car is 1936, the Mk I Ruby was superceded by the Mk II around July 1936 - the Mk I is much prettier of the two (also Pearls, Opals = two seater). The registration BRO 64 tells us that "RO" is the registration district and it was registered in Hertford, Hertfordshire. The series ran from 1934 to 1977, the 'B" was prefixed to expand the range of registrations, so it would have started ARO 1 and run to ARO 999, then BRO 1 to BRO 999, and so on, until 1963, when the numbers were expanded again, with a suffix "A" for 1963, "B" for 1964 and so on. Registration number stay with the car for life, but it is possible to transfer the number to another vehicle (if you were a twat and the number happened to have your initials you might want to keep it and move it vehicle to vehicle so you can tell the world what a tosser you are). If the car came back to the UK and had paperwork to prove that it was taxed under that number, then the number would be re-issued! It is not on the database, so it probably left these shores before the registration system was computerised in the late 1970's. Good luck with this iconic car - there are a few over the pond, I shall watch with interest!

@austinswallow the previous owner traded a model t for it. This car was last listed in the Austin 7 registry in 07. Yes it's a 1936, from around march. I'd guess its been locked up for many years. I've gotten distracted by other projects. I'll get back to this one soon. Next thing to do is get a set of pistons, and have the block bored. Amazingly enough, about 250 miles south of me, is a a7 body needing a home. He wants a fortune though...

The R10! 4 fully independent suspensions as well as 4 disc brakes, a nice push rod 4 banger (1108 cm3?) and the engine behind the rear wheels, like the 911 Porsche. A very reliable and funny car to drive. I owned a R8 Major decades ago and I can say it was a well built car, honestly manufatured. Thanks to revive this astucious Renault.

Usually older Automatics are fantastic. Its when they combine electricity, metal powder as a clutch, shifter motors, and design a brand new system.. This creates problems. Now Subaru years later used a powder clutch CVT automatic.. They got the kinks out.

I had one of these in the UK mid 80s. The box had symptoms like yours We took the cover off the relay cover in the bonnet, saw nothing obvious. We replaced the cover and it started working, it ran fine for 2 years until the rust got it.

It is a very intricate mechanism and obviously great in theory. The Jaeger engineers must have been proud of their work I think. I wonder if anything similar was the inspiration.

Thats a good question. I'm certain they had simpler ideas, but couldn't use them for several reasons(like patents). The VW Autostick was a much simpler design-but German. Since they were French, they had to do it their own way. This was back in a time, when companies dared to be different!

I read about the terrible rust problems the Renault Dauphine had that probably made a big contribution to the poor reputation of Renault in the USA. The writer, who lived in New York, said the cars were lucky to survive one salty winter before the body looked like a paper doily and he swore you could actually hear it rusting. Even in a non snowy country like Australia, where Renaults were popular, you never see them. A terrible shame because they are interesting and different. Having said that, this transmission is mad. 😄

This has no rust, and about 17k miles. They are made of super thin steel, so if rust sets in- its over. The screwball transmission saved this one...

The tire shop I worked at picked up a used one similar to this in 1990. It used a strobe attachment that flashed on the tire, the sensor was held to the suspension with a magnet. The more out of balance, the longer the strobe was lit. When it was close to being balanced, the strobe was shorter and you could start to read the writing on the tire as it spun. similar to using a timing light.

The function of the city hi way switch was simply to lower the downshift into first gear from 9 to 7 mph. Customers complained about the lurch on the earlier ones because the downshift into first at 9 seemed abrupt. Great that you got it running!
