There was a large tree about 35-40 feet up when originally climbed by Chouinard. It was rated 5.7 with the tree but is considerably more difficult now; most of the regulars call it a 5.8 climb. I've done it twice while the tree was still present and once since it fell out of the crack system. The tree remains are around the base--at least it was still there around 2017.

Hi John, once you topped this route what is your strategy for lowering? I find grigri doesn't work too well when the bottom of the rope is weighted, just looking for some insight. Beautiful climb would love to get on some granite soon! Thanks :)
@HBSTONELIGHT2 ай бұрын
From where you park the trail leads out to the top of the crag. There are 2 bolts at the top where you rap down almost 200' to start the climb. From the 2 bolts at the top you can re-direct your rope to climb several other routes there. Look up Squarenail on Mountain Project for for info.. It's a super fun crag with mostly slab sport routes. I only use the Grigri for rappelling, not for top rope soloing.

The main location is at the Father Crowley Vista Point - Rainbow Canyon. It's roughly 8 miles west of Panamint Springs. There are signs for the Vista Point turnout on the Highway. It's a large parking lot and the best location to start out at. There is also a display case showing the aviation history of the canyon. Once there you will see the Ridgeline and canyon and the many different locations to view from. Due to the 2019 F-18 crash in the canyon, only Civilian Aircraft are allowed to fly it now. Hope that helps!

nice to see bodysurfing at the wedge. it's a whole different deal being in wild nature without the advantage of a stick for protection, . like a board surfer . this place is famous for being responsible for more lost fins and broken collar bones than any other place in southern California.

Those wave are garbage. When I rode the Wedge the side wave was super and I could ride it to the peak and come out of the barrel. Frontslider.
@richardelliott83523 ай бұрын
there is the wedge, and not the wedge. most people shouldn't be out in those conditions, that's why the crowd is on the beach watching people on " garbage".waves and not in the water.

The Army Corp of Engineers destroyed the Wedge. Instead of pulling up the huge boulders and putting them back in place they put small boulders and granite shards on the jetty. It has never been the same. Now it's a huge clamshell into the sand. I had the good days there. Then I moved to Ventura Country and had Zuma all to myself on waves over 8 feet. I rode 17 ft perfect lefts and rights and I was the only guy out. The lifeguards would sit in front of me, and old gray haired man and watch in amazement. Yours truly, Frontslider.

How or who set the rope ? thanks first timer here
@HBSTONELIGHT6 ай бұрын
The person who is belaying me climbed the route leading it placing trad gear on the way up for protection. Once at the top of the climb she fed the rope through a set of rings and was then lowered back down. After doing that we now had a top rope set up so others could climb the route.

Where is this?
@HBSTONELIGHT7 ай бұрын
This is part of the way down Cascade Falls in Yosemite. To get to this spot you will need to rappel down 100'. You will need a rope and climbing gear to get here.

mean air! one has to wonder if dolphins have been doing that forever or did watching humans influence their wave riding? probably the former, but who knows.
@theMAKAproject7 ай бұрын
It's both for sure! Humans learned surfing from dolphins, and now dolphins watch us donit. Guaranteed there were some Rouge extreme sport dolphins that did crazy shit, but there's no way we aren't influencing eachother.
@langelle17 ай бұрын
What's cool is when they catch the wave and "bodysurf" underwater. I tried it a few times. You can catch the wave underwater but it's hard to keep going. The dolphins are experts, of course.
