Interestingly not a whole lot of difference on Flashback. Can't say it's shocking the more powerful hardware had better looking games, although the fact is it certain played a lot of games that were also available for the SNES.

Flashback in particular is one you'd think that the Jaguar would blow away the SNES like it did with Doom.

Donald Duck is not the same game, this comparison does not work, also a few games like Rayman 2, Marvel vs Capcom, and Mortal Kombat 4/Gold are missing a lot of content that makes it also an unfair comparison.
@RetroComparisons

The Donald Duck game is the same game, every version of it is a little different though even between the PS1 & N64. MK4 is at 36:30, Rayman 2 is at 50:30 and Marvel Vs Capcom is at 32:00. I'm not sure why any comparison is unfair. It's a look at how games progressed from 1 generation to the next, not a "look how much better this console is against this other one".

Doom was clearly looked much better on the Jaguar and frankly it was also way better than the Saturn version. It makes me think it that was more about the porters of the Saturn version doing a terrible job than it does demonstrate untapped potential in the Jaguar though.

The Saturn version of Doom was a disaster. The Jaguar version is one of if not the best cartridge versions of the game IMO. Actually tomorrow morning I'll be releasing the Jaguar vs Saturn video so you'll get to see those head to head.

It's so weird that the jaguar had a CD add-on. The base system certainly wasn't successful enough to justify an add-on. It's also interesting how Atari kept stressing that it was 64-bits, but it barely looked better than sega genesis and SNES games.
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons Күн бұрын
The Genesis having the CD add on made total sense for several reason and was completely justified. But yeah the Jaguar? I mean either make it with CD technology to begin with or don't do it at all at that point.

It's kinda weird how my perception is so different for quite a few titles. You have games like Chrono Trigger where I felt like the SNes version looked a bit better or rather the PS1 version looked a bit washed-out in certain parts (also damn those load times). Then you have Doom where the PS1 version is very obviously superior and then you have Super Ghouls'n'Ghosts where both versions are pretty much on par

The Jaguar wanted to be a NeoGeo so bad. NeoGeo was just unmatched during these times. The only thing the SNES had going for it was its large library. NeoGeo just had that quality arcade experience, just like the "FM TOWNS Marty" Console. Both of which are still insanely expensive.

Most of the SNES games look better. That being said, Jaguar had a few great games (Tempest, Defender, AvP, Missile Command, etc), which is what they should have focused on. Maybe tried to get Rayman as their mascot.

Games with good definition and color gamut. The Jaguar's biggest problem was always its programming. The time that was wasted in producing its games burdened its release dates against the competition. That's what killed Atari, which could have opted for simpler hardware that was easier to program for the console's intended purpose. In short, with 32 bits you could do the same as with the so-called 64 bits and much more easily and quickly. And in fact, it wasn't much different with the 32X...

There is a updated version of Doom on 32X now, called Doom 32X Resurrection (current version is 3.1). It far surpasses the Atari Jaguar release across the board. Basically everything wrong with the original 32X Doom port has been fixed. You can run the game on a real 32X via a flash cart like the Mega EverDrive. As far as pitting the two against each other, tbh the 32X wins out, and this is coming from a prior Jaguar faithful that used to own a Jag, Jag CD, and 90 percent of the library in the late 90s. Even though there is some very nice looking 2d titles on Jaguar, there is usually something off with them except on a rare occasion. Either the frame-rate is gimped, or there is sluggish controls or something. 3D wise, kinda same deal. You were stuck with a lot of eurotrash on the Jaguar too, and still are with current home-brew. And in hindsight, some of it's best rated games during the 90s don't hold up nearly as well today when judged by all else. Mainly due to frame-rate issues in like Alien vs Predator, or things like Doom missing music and enemies, or Jag CD Primal Rage being gimped across the board making it worse than Saturn, 3DO, and PS1, I would rather play the majority of 3d and 2d titles on 32X over anything on Jaguar these days if I had both sitting here still. But if I was just stuck with a Jaguar today and nothing else (32X, Saturn, 3DO, PS1), I would probably limit my library to Raiden, Ultra Vortek, Rayman, Kasumi Ninja (for lulz), Super Burnout, Tempest 2k, Missile Command 3D, Defender 2000, Power Drive Rally, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D. But from that list, I would still rather play stuff like Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, MK2, Star Wars Arcade, AfterBurner, Space Harrier, Shadow Squadron, T-Mek, Wrestlemania Arcade Game, Doom Resurrection, Golden Axe 32X, Blackthorne, Cyber brawl, Kolibri, Metal Head, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Tempo, and BC Racers on 32X instead.

@shiningphantasy1393 Күн бұрын
Yep the Doom improvement effort on 32x really did that console some justice; I'm not even a big fan of the genre (though I appreciate older games in the genre considerably more than modern cinematic experiences) but that kind of result is great to have come into fruition. Golden Axe 32x had some really superb enhanced details in the backgrounds, but I would have liked to see updated magic effects and character sprites to go with it. In spite of the clumsy controller and games that sometimes fell short of their full potential I'd still take the Jaguar over the 3D0, just by virtue of them having games from more genres that I like, and that it feels more like a traditional gaming console rather than a multi-media unit. I'd give the 32x a modest edge in spite of a smaller library and of course the Jaguar is nowhere in the same ballpark as a PS1 or a Saturn.

The reason many of the games look the same is because most developers used the Jags 16bit co processor instead of its main cpu because it was much easier to program for.

Things I noticed: - Jaguar had a higher resolution resulting in smaller looking sprites but more playfield - More colors - Some more detailed sprites and/or backgrounds (Noticeable in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) - Better 3D (Wolfenstein and Doom(Which had no music and it turns out to be a licensing and predicted sales thing))

Dreamcast was ahead of its time. I truly think the reason it didn't do better is that file sharing services like Kazam and... that other big one, were taking off in full gear, along with CD burners, these Dreamcast games were playable from a burned cd-r. I remember my friend showing me his CD holder with page after page of games.

I feel bad for the Jaguar. Atari had a good opportunity in the 90s to make a significant comeback and they blew it. The Jaguar was released too quickly. They didn't have enough software to take advantage of the potential for their 64 bit capabilities. When they did try to do just that, they flubbed it with projects like Tempest. They developed a system that was legitimately ahead of its time for the market but their execution for presenting it to the public was a disaster. They had terrible marketing and a lot of shortsightedness when it came to simple things like the controllers, game licensing, and actually taking advantage of the computing power they had hyped up their product with. I remember drooling over magazine articles and keeping my ears peeled for any conversations in computer and video gaming stores for updates on the release of this 64-bit wonder that was going to hail the mighty return of Atari. Then, when it did finally come out, it was such a flop that I didn't even know it was commercially available until about six months after it was released. I tried it at a friends house and remembered thinking that it was no better than my SNES or Genesis and most of my 256 color PC games were better or equal quality to the Jaguar library. They also shot themselves in the foot with their pricing and retail availability. I had trouble finding a Jaguar at most of the local big name media stores. My nearest Best Buy didn't have it and neither did the Media Play warehouse in the city I lived in.

I remember the ads but I don't think anyone carried the console near me and I never saw the games anywhere. I ended up getting one for next to nothing in the early 2000s at a tag sale but it was the one console I ended up getting rid of because there was nowhere to get games back then.
