Why is gloss paint better than the others?
@andymartel7585
@andymartel7585 2 ай бұрын
Gloss cures harder and holds the flocking better. When used on top of or under flocking it doesn’t shine.

When mixing the brown in this video, what is the actual rustoleum brown? Flat, gloss, brown, dark brown, etc?

Andy, glad so see another video! Do you flock drake widgeon? If so what do you use to bring out the amber color of the body? I've used an orange base paint with brown flocking and had good luck, but wondered if you had a different process or tips.

I have and I do. They are coming later this spring in their own video, drakes and hens both. I use sand paint with tan bisque flocking then layer burnt sienna and raw umber VERY lightly on the sides to slowly build up the color. Lastly I’ll cut in some white then overspray grey on the chest to give it that purplish/wine color. I don’t know why grey works for that. But it does. Personally, I think wigeon are about as difficult as it gets when it comes to flocking and airbrushing decoys. I have some pictures of them on my facebook page, Two Rivers Counterfeits Waterfowl Decoys, and the Decoys Flockers group has several as well.

What brand of paints do you use for your airbrushing?
@andymartel7585
@andymartel7585 4 ай бұрын
Depends on the situation Jerry. Most of what I use on the bodies is thinned Rustoleum gloss. Cheap, durable, and sprays really well. Same stuff we use to adhere the flocking to the body. I thin with naphtha til it’s about the consistency of whole milk. Some colors I use Createx, and the irradescent/pearlized colors are createx also. Lastly, I use some goldens products. The pyrole orange is great for hen and speck bills. I use some of their colors for shading as well.

What did you use to flock the bodies and heads? I think I heard you mention that the body was feather brown over gloss black. How about the head?
@andymartel7585

On drakes I use goose grey over almond. On hens I like a mix of feather brown and goose grey that I call “dirty head” over almond.

After you clean them up and prime them are you flocking the whole body before painting and if so what color is the flocking?
@andymartel7585
@andymartel7585 6 ай бұрын
Yes I usually flock the body as well. Its easier to work on birds with removeable heads because you can do two different colors the same day. I use goose grey flocking over white paint (usually) on mallard drake bodies.

I know this is a few years old but hopefully you still read comments. It’s that time of year to start getting ready for the season and my wood ducks looked terrible. I was inspired by this and decided to try. It’s my first flock and paint and it came out ok. Got more to do and hopefully I’ll improve. Thanks for posting this video.

Thinned oil paints, while still pretty durable, are not as durable as MOST colors of nylon flocking (green for example washes out really bad, thats why i dont flock green on mallard heads). So by using black on the tail and brown on the chest (I sprayed it in the video but since I have gone back to flocking the brown on because I have found it to be more durable) I get a better and more durable finished product. I have found that it maintains its contrast better when it gets dirty as well. Two layers of properly colored flocking and oil paint are better than one light layer of paint so to speak.

I know it’s been a while since you’ve posted the video. But what do you clean your airbrush out with after using oil based paints, such as the rust oleum hunter green. If you could get back to me it would be greatly appreciated.
@andymartel7585
@andymartel7585 6 ай бұрын
I like acetone for oils and believe it or not, windex for createx and golden acrylics. I have a video on the channel about "backwashing" which covers what you are asking. Every so often (about once a week or anytime I'm switching from acrylic to oil or vice versa, I'll tear the airbrush down completely and use citrus strip to thoroughly clean all the internals. Q-tips are handy to have on hand as well as a blow gun for your compressor to blast out hard to reach places.

Hi Andy. I have really enjoyed watching you transform so so decoys into some very realistic pieces. i used to make the L L Bean type cork decoys years ago and truly wish that we had flocking and airbrushes then. I'm a little color blind so I would like to know the colors and source for your drake mallard flocking. I have not found Dove Grey from Superior (really needs to be by name), but several people have mentioned Goose Grey or light or dark goose. thanks for the entertainment. Very realistic decoys and very understandable tutorial. Thanks, Robbie
@andymartel7585
@andymartel7585 6 ай бұрын
Hey Robbie: Yes, I use Goose Grey nylon flocking. Its by far the most commonly used color on waterfowl I find. The end result is greatly influenced by the color paint you use to adhere the flocking with. In the case of drake mallards, I prefer Gloss White to use as adhesive. Some folks prefer a bit darker/early season drake, in which case smoke grey or a mix of white and grey can be used. Goose grey looks kinda brownish when you look at it, but that mallard in my profile picture is done with goose grey. As are hen mallards (with almond underneath), canada geese (with almond on wings and light grey on sides and chest), hen woodies (with hen brown underneath), gadwall (with grey or almond underneath respectively), hen canvasbacks, hen ringneck side pockets, heads on black ducks, teal..... the list goes on lol.

On hen black ducks its actually yellow. I like createx wicked golden yellow. The trick is to prime with self etch primer which is grey, then lightly over-spray the yellow which will give you that kinda olive green/yellow color. If you get heavy handed with it, you can overspray some flat black and wipe it as soon as you spray it. That will fill in the low spots with black as well which is a great trick to use on other species as well like bluebills and pintails. Works well on mallard drakes as well. For the drakes, use the same color just more of it to get that more intense yellow. On hen mallards, which might be the question you actually had; I use a white primer generally (zinnzer bulleye all surface) and a Golden's acrylic paint called Pyrole Orange.
