It's a great looking tent. One question : How do you think the windpws would stand up to heavy rain, are the zipped curtains water resistant?
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk 15 күн бұрын
It’s the same material as the tent, so yes. Though as it’s poly cotton it may need some weathering (ie getting damp and drying out a few times). Plus, as it isn’t polyester, you will want to avoid things like furniture pushing against the tent flysheet so that water doesn’t bleed through, just as in a traditional tent.

Not too isolated. The biggest town nearby is Shrewsbury, with many medieval buildings. Also an easy drive from there is the ancient town of Bishops Castle. The Long Mynd is a must visit if you like hill walking. If you park in the NT Cardingmill Valley there are marked routes you can follow, as well as toilets and a cafe

Deciding between the Padres XL and Double. With basic XL, there is not much space on the right side for meal preparation left, and it packs in 15cm width. With Double, it packs in just 8cm, but has less of a storage space and does not have water basket holder. Isn't Doube more wobbly? Tough choices ... which one would be your favourite nowadays? :-)

@@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk We have visited the local camping show with hundreds of camping items on the display. I have seen the Padres XL, Double, but also Magante. Magante is nice, sturdy, with lots of features, and storage, but a bit heavy on packing (car storage cca 1x1m). With the Padres Double we are heading towards, I got negatively surprised though, that the table was not flat. The middle (connection) section was a bit higher. It was either broken, or inproperly setup. Still, from all those options, the Padres Double is a nice compromise - storage, weight, packing size.

Whats your go to cooler for off grid Gav? Do you have an icepack stratergy? Its not obvious to new campers IMO
@hypo345
@hypo345 2 ай бұрын
I know you asked Gav but if it’s of any interest we use an Icey Tek 40ltr cooler with two of their large ice packs and it’s worked well for us. Tend to put some frozen foods in the box such frozen chicken, bacon etc as well some unfrozen food that will get myself and other half through a week. One of the reasons we did it was not necessarily because we were off grid but because the compressor noise of the fridge turning on and off through the night was quite disturbing, even if we have an EHU we still use the Icey Tek and will alternate the ice blocks if there is a campsite freezer.

Strange they are displaying the Base camp sleeping bags as I thought they were discontinued. There’s some good deals on the base camp bags ATM. Two can be zipped together to form a double. Robens do have some great designs with their tents and some of their gear but some looks like rebranded Chinese stuff.
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk 2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, there's actually a big problem in reverse, with many look-a-likes being created in various factories, but to a lesser quality (thinner/wrong material, details missed). Sometimes you have to get your hands on with some items to feel the difference with more solid materials and better precision engineering. 😀 I've seen photos from the Robens designers taking prototypes on expeditions into the wilds of Northern Scandinavia so that they can test and refine designs. The products are designed by real campers that are very passionate about their products, and can talk in great detail as to why a feature was designed in such a way. So it's always disappointing when cheaper fakes appear, which typically miss the whole point of why something was designed in such a way.

@@GetoutwiththekidsCoUk I have a lot of Robens gear, two tents, chairs,table, camp kitchen (which was an excellent design) Base camp sleeping bags, cookery king and it’s all been excellent. The cookery king has the unique feature of the lower wind shied base being removable so and gas stove that can be used as long it’s dimensions don’t exceed the diameter of the base. On the Chinese websites an almost identical stove can be bought without the unique feature, which came first I wonder. Anyway I think Robens is a very good brand and their tent wind testing is very reassuring.
