Seasteaders seek consent? Well that would be a disaster in a closed system. It is a good idea to have new Seasteaders sign a contract to obey existing rules but to continue seek consent beyond that invites dissension and chaos.

So, you're just going to hand more money and legitimacy to the international regime by flagging your vessels? How is this going to change anything? This is like telling the IRS about your "Crypto Currency." It defeats the purpose.
@FF-xw8gs18 күн бұрын
So, what do you recommend for dealing with state navies invading and stealing floating platforms? All governments will consider this "legitimate," and seasteading communities will be shut down before they even begin. If we don't have the capabilities or technologies to build a seasteading community in international waters right now, imagine having the military capability to repel state navy invasions. Therefore, you have to play by the rules of the big players, while you are not a big player yourself to negotiate on equal terms.

@@FF-xw8gs good point I guess. I guess the situation is just non optimal for now
@FF-xw8gs18 күн бұрын
@@JoeHeineBut the situation is really not ideal for seasteading right now, which is why the Seasteading Institute is dealing with legal aspects, but there are still maritime technological aspects that need improvement. I believe that only in 20 years will there be a seasteading community in international waters. Until then, most likely the projects are focused on the coasts and economic zones to validate the idea. Perhaps it would be interesting in this process to lobby some small countries like Nauru, Fiji, or Tuvalu to approve a law called "Special Oceanic Administrative Region," similar to how Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China. The only matters China handles concerning Hong Kong are foreign relations and external defense. With this law, seastead platforms could self-govern with their own laws. The platform owner would just need to fill out a form, pay some fees, and register it, let’s say in Tuvalu, as a "Special Oceanic Administrative Region," and voilà, we would have our own laws. Although we would be exempt from Tuvalu’s national laws, we would still have to comply with international maritime laws, which fortunately are not that restrictive, and we would still need to fly the flag of the country. Most likely, we would only be able to become truly independent when seasteading communities are economically rich and influential enough to play in the big leagues. But I think that is much better than doing nothing or placing my hope in foolish politics that will NEVER bring the freedoms we truly want. The political game is dominated by progressives and conservatives, with no space for libertarians and anarcho-capitalists, which is why I think it’s foolish for them to worry about participating in politics, believing that libertarians will be elected someday.

Instead of creating whole solutions, how about offering just pontoons with built-in plumbing? The way I see it, building the pontoon with built-in sewage treatment, and permitting is the hard part. By mass-producing these pontoons, you drive down costs, reduce waste, and help protect the environment. Customers then choose whatever size they want, and then build their desired homes as they see fit.

The most important "technology" you need is defensive means. You have only the rights you are willing and able to defend. If it can be taken from you, it will be. It's probably impossible to be invincible, but you should strive to make it as costly as possible for anyone to mess with you. Look at nature for inspiration. Defensive capability is top priority for many animals. You're not going to get anywhere by negotiating with these criminal organizations pretending to be "governments".
@michaelgusovsky7 ай бұрын
that's why people organizing in international waters is a great option, and should be explored. and whether you're on land, or at sea, when an armed gang of terrorists calling themselves government, decides to attack, it's pretty hard to defend against them; fighting and brute force probably won't be the best option. perhaps finesse, and developing a mutually beneficial relationship with a small country, off their coast, might be promising.

However, when you start talking about how these things are going to have to be “certified” and “insured”, you’re opening yourself up to be regulated to hell by the very people you’re ostensibly trying to escape. What’s the point of being in international waters if you’re just going to recreate the nanny state at home?
@themonrovian844127 күн бұрын
Exactly this. At some point someone with enough money and brains will just have to DO IT. You can’t comply your way to freedom. You can choose to be respectable or you can choose to be free - it’s basically impossible to be both.

@@FF-xw8gs you raise a very good point. In my opinion the only way to get around this would be to do this in Antarctica under the rubric of research and the Antarctic Treaty system. You need to be in an extreme environment. Not only is military activity banned south of 60 degrees, it is very physically difficult to conduct operations there. To add an additional layer of protection you could make the colony submarine and mobile. Is this ridiculously expensive? Yes. But it is still vastly cheaper and safer than colonizing the Moon or Mars. I agree with you in the sense that I doubt you could have a pleasant Seastead floating in temperate or tropical waters anywhere in the world and not have it shut down or otherwise screwed with. A submarine Seastead moving around beneath the Antarctic ice sheets would be a challenge to deal with even for the US navy. And this is much less fantastical than any off-world colony.

Unfortunately Liberland is not yet recognized internationally as a "state". Therefore, raising the flag of Liberland on the seasteads would not bring "legitimacy" before other nations to the free operations of the Seasteaders. But when Liberland finally achieves the much-desired international recognition, they could become the Seasteaders' greatest ally.
