Picton was kind of an ass, even by the oppressive British standards of the time. He got in trouble numerous times as a colonial island governor for being harsh on slaves, even according to his peers.

Picton leading his command in tophat was at Quatre Bras, two days before Waterloo, when Wellington's army was nearly caught off guard by Napoleon's sudden move, but for a Belgian general officer's personal initiative to occupy the crossroad. Rushing to the battlefield, Picton lost his luggage and led his division in civil dress. Bondarchuk could not help relocating the scene at Waterloo. Picton was archetypal of aggressive commander, like Ney in France and Blücher in Prussia. Napoleon is supposed to have asked "Where is Picton?" to know where the counterattack would come from. And true to his reputation, Picton slammed the French first attack with the help of the cavalry - and got shot in the process.

He was a great man. No one should give a shit about the bad stuff. All greats of history have negatives. If it weren't for the likes of Picton, Britain would be a colony of France. However, a rather weak willed descendant of his, wants his monuments removed. I bet the brave warrior Sir Thomas would have been so proud of what came after him- NOT!!!

So we shouldn't give. Ahsit about the bad stuff of people. What about Stalin. I mean he did some bad stuff sure. But he did defeat the Nazis. Would it be socially acceptable to ignore his complicity in the purge and mismanagement of the Famine of 1932?

Sorry, but England was invaded by 21,000 Dutch on 450 ships in 1688 and ineffectively defended by treasonous natives. The coup was later renamed "Glorious" and "Revolution", being neither of both. The Dutch conquerors then passed the crown to a German offspring of the family, still in place today.
@theduckwithacat40548 ай бұрын
This fails to mention how the dutch was invited by the English Parliament to assume the crown. which is why it was called a glorious revolution. . the Dutch was invited because King James was disposed for being a catholic. it wasn't an invasion and they was legitimate rulers of England at the time by right of the English Parliament.@@gengis737

It wasn't actually another actor; it was by Jack Hawkins himself. I remember at the time him being interviewed. He could manage to 'speak' by effectively belching and vocalising at the same time, but that technique was only good for a very few syllables. So whole lines of speech for a movie had to be pre-recorded. It's still recognisably his own voice (just)
