So if you take the grate out of a multi fuel burner it becomes a wood burner stove?

I have a multifuel stove. When cleaning it out I discovered some threaded metal bars mixed up in the ash, one 3 inch and the other 6 inches long. Both have a niche on the end to allow a flat head screwdriver to be used to turn them. I have been researching on the net to try to find out if the bars have fallen off the stove itself because I can't understand where else they could be from. I am left wondering if the stove is safe to use now? Have you ever heard of this?

Hey do I need an external air feed at the back to run a multi stove. I have an ecosy panoramic wood burner at the minute but I'm upgrading the door and Ash pan with a kit from the supplier. My house is a 2008 build. Cheers

Can you also burn just wood on the multi fuel Ash pan with air supply turned off or would I need to take the grate out each time to burn. Thanks

@StoveInstallations Жыл бұрын
Not to run a multi fuel stove as such but in a 2008 build yes. You need an air inlet to the room for the stove to work well and a direct air intake is a good way to do that.

@Suffolk Stove Installations thank you. I do have a cut out in the floor with a cover over it allowing air through it works well enough for the wood burner so hopefully okay for coal

Had our Clearview Pioneer 400 for several years . We find the multi very handy as its easy to set it for over night burning with just a shovel of smokeless then drop back to wood in the morning. Very clean burning and when swept annually the average soot recovered is just 800 grams. We only burn very dry logs all below 15%

hello sir, thankyou for the video. i was hoping to buy an open fireplace but that is no longer legal. as i was hoping to use the fireplace as an emergency cooker, which of the two burners reviewed would double up if needed to warm/ cook food stuffs? im concerned about toxins in the smokeless coal thank you
@StoveInstallations
@StoveInstallations 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Either of those stoves (and a lot more other stoves) will be fine to use a pan on top of to heat food. The food won't be in contact with the fuel inside the stove so you won't be contaminating your food with toxins. Smokeless coal is VERY corrosive to the flue liner though. Your liner will last considerably less time if you burn coal.

Yes. Once the kindling and first fuel load is well alight and the flue has established a good strong draw.

With a multi fuel stove you would need two vents then, one at the bottom and one at the top ? Not just a grate.

I have a multi fuel stove, but mainly burn wood, so I've placed some fire bricks in the back corners and along each side of the grate to inhibit the air flow, and I let the ash build up. Now the air mainly draws from the back, feeding the fire from above, and making it much more efficient.

Not totally correct. The air path information is correct but many "Wood only" stoves also have a grate and/or riddle & ashpan as well. i.e. Contura 51.

Your examples offer a very clear distinction between the two. I have a French Petit Godin stove which is a tall cylinder with chimney vents top and bottom and a single air vent located just under the grate (but air flows both under and over the grate). I've heard several owners insist that this is purely a wood burner but in this particular instance that would seem to be snobbery, as it burns both wood and coal really well. Apparently they were invented after the war when the impoverished French needed a stove that would burn anything.

That's one of the few exceptions to this general rule Dave. The tech spec on that stove tells you it's there to get the stove going (it's easier to get a fire lit when there's air running THROUGH the firebed from beneath) but that "Primary air" should close once the firebed is established. If you don't, you'll burn away the ember fire bed and the stove won't burn wood in the best way.

I have very successfully burnt a mixture of wood and coal in a wood burner over the last couple of decades, with no effect on the stove. The secret is to always have an ash bed on the base of the fire and always have a mixture of wood and coal, keeping the coal up in the wood above the bed of the fire. I generally use a mixture of bituminous nz west coast coal which has a high heat value and very low ash but which will not smoulder overnight and ohai sub bituminous which is slightly lower in heat value, ashier but retains hot coals overnight. Both coals have very low sulphur contents. The only downside to not having a grate is in removing the ash, which when it is hot is very fluid and dusty, but is not a problem when cold, or simply use a shop vac to vacuum up the dust raised in the air and of course a steel bucket to carry the ash. It goes without saying to only use dry wood

Does burning house coal in a multi fuel burning stove really do any damage to the chimney flue???
@StoveInstallations
@StoveInstallations 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I'm so sorry I haven't answered your question sooner. Burning fossil fuel of any kind generates a very harsh and corrosive soot (by comparison to wood burning soot) so the short answer is yes. Coal soot is even more corrosive than smokeless fuel soot so its a double yes. The worst of the worst is the very oily, tarry coal that you can buy (often cheaply). I've known of two 904 grade liners from good, reputable manufacturers, that I've installed to corrode through in around 5 years!!!! ( they should last 20 years). Both customers were burning coal.
