Fun! I LOVE my library. An interesting topic about the fines - my library actually stopped implementing late fines for books several years ago, and you can see why that could be important to the demographics it serves. I'm in a bit of a video slump... but if I can get my act in order I will do this tag!!

Love this. I love books about libraries and book shops. Some of my favorites are “the historian”, “the bookshop” Penelope Fitzgerald, “the last bookshop in London “. The one and future witches also focuses on one of the main characters who was a librarian and she gets fired but lots of research in libraries. Books about books are soothing. 😂👍😉✌️

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been thinking about a career shift in the years to come. I have a masters in social work and am thinking about a change. I really can’t afford the money or time for a MLIS. I’m in my 50s but my community college has an online certificate program in library information systems with an included internship. 30 credit hours. The MLIS is not that many more credit hours but the cost difference is extremely prohibitive at this point. If I wanted to work as an assistant/ support staff do you think the investment in a certificate program is worth it? I’m interested in public library systems. As a social worker I have a good skill set for working with people, knowledge of community resources, support with problem solving and helping people with whatever goal they walk in with. I would be grateful for your thoughts. Most of the library videos are people talking about the process of the MLIS . Trying to sort out the best option at this point. Love this video. 👍👍✌️🫶😉
@Meghan.Kirkland2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for commenting! A MLIS is incredibly expensive and often unnecessary depending on what you are looking to do. Sometimes you don't even need the certificate but obviously this depends on where you live. It will certainly give you a leg up on other applicants. Especially as someone with a masters in social work, you will be in high demand! I would only pursue a MLIS if you are interested in a management role. If you are perfectly comfortable being a library assistant (as you mentioned) at a public library or even a social worker in a library (as those are jobs that are becoming more and more necessary) then the certificate is all I would recommend for that. Best of luck with everything and keep me updated!

As one of a group of students I can remember being shown around the college library by an older librarian. She said that the books were placed using the Bliss system. She then turned to us students and said, "Are you familiar with Bliss?" This voice came from the back of the group with a strong Welsh accent. "Well, life has been a bit hard for me recently actually.." She did not appreciate it but I still find it funny now. Came over from Maeve's channel. I hope you are reading something good.

@@Centroid888 I really recommend looking into volunteering/applying for casual positions at your local public library to edge your way in! A lot of places hire internally so getting any experience you can and getting even something temporary can give you a massive boost. I got my current job because I worked at the university on a contract position and did about four contracts before finally getting something permanent! It all really adds up
@Centroid8886 ай бұрын
@@Meghan.Kirkland Thanks, yeah maybe volunteering is a good option. I've already applied to 2 libraries, seems like the demand for library personnel isn't as high as in other fields.
@Meghan.Kirkland6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately a huge reason for that is budget cuts. Typically when conservative governments (on any level) are in power the budgets get cut. Libraries are one of the first places to feel budget cuts because it's harder to prove "profit". But stick with it! If it's something you really want it may take a bit but it is very rewarding and you can make some pretty good money (depending on region). I'm planning to do a video on this soon so hopefully it will answer any further questions you have!
