i'd make a rule with the spear for hits to count they have to have a reasonable amount of force behind them. All these little love-taps should not count as successful strikes. Same goes for the rapier, you cannot just touch the other guy with the sword and call it legit. Obviously you could argue that this is simulating unarmored combat, but that would be kind of odd considering duels with spears vs. rapier and shield were not a thing, and with rapier duels you usually only stopped after serious injury or death. A light graze from a rapier will not be sufficient enough to cause serious injury, nor with a spear. If you were to argue about safety, then go and buy some plastic lightsabers and foam swords, HEMA is not for you!

@@mrRPN416 If this is true, then that means in SCA all you need to do is wave your weapon around like a noodle and get multiple little taps to win. Doesn't sound very fun imo. Maybe I will watch some SCA videos and see what it is about.

Got to keep that shield and sword tucked in together. When you swing your moving the shield out of the way leaving big gaps for people to poke you. Otherwise fun match. :)

This really shows why spears dominated warfare for centuries and were seen in real battles way more than swords or axes. You can't stab or slash someone with a sword if you can't get close enough. Spears are easy to make (compared to a sword) and relatively and instinctive easy to use. You can give one to an untrained peasant and tell him to stick the enemy with the pointy end and he can do some damage. If in on top of that you train a battalion of soldiers to stay in formation and use their spears and shields together they become even more effective.

Very true, though there was a video made by Roland Warzecha about training with sharp swords and found an interesting discovery about how a sharp blade changes the dynamic. Suggest you give it a look.

The elbow is covered, and the cops are also padded with foam inside the actual cops themselves. The elbow pads stick out the back of the cop and make it look like my elbow is further back than it is. I think it's a little ugly, but also gives me extra padding above the elbow in the meaty bits (similar to a rerebrace); so it's a trade-off I'm willing to accept.

@jameswolfe1487 There's a more exaggerated version from a different angle earlier in the video. Am somewhat ducking, but also leaning away from it while bringing my basket hilt across my face. It usually stays pretty tight with the shield (if not slightly behind it) to create a plane that takes the flatsnap away. Between the lean and the angular nature of the helmet, it typically causes any flatsnaps that do sneak through to skip off. The shot I find that I'm most open to from that position is the deep wrap to the shoulder. Typically, from that position, my feet are damn near planted and it's the body weight that forces me to pivot off to the right (where I can throw a return flatsnap or leg wrap). If I can catch the flatsnap with a punch and not be thrown off balance, I'm usually looking for the return offside.
