Across the road was a really battered shop, housing an old man supporting the Albanian version of communism. He had one poster and a few books to sell.

Seeing this footage brings back happy memories. I visited the Recommended Records shop quite a few times and later when it was These Records. Their shop gigs were good fun too. The Recommended and These catalogues were essential reading for me. I still have many LPs I bought from them. Thanks for the upload.

London, Wandsworth Road 387 where i stayed / worked July - September 1982 with Recommended Records Mailorder / Distribution .. Label was at the same street, Wandswort Road 583, where Chris Cutler was living, but he was often on tour with Work, Cassiber or David Thomas and Lindsay Cooper ..

Hey guys, that's a younger me in this video; working out the custom forms. Who actually filmed this because I must have known you then?

hi Charlie, I filmed it on the same day I interviewed Chris Cutler about Recommended (my name's Nick Beddow)

@@NickBeddow-bb2us Hi, Nice of you to identify yourself. I must have known you at the time of filming at the shop. Interviewing CC, that wasn't a common occurrence back then. He tended to avoid them unless he vouched for you. Where did the interview get published, out of interest?

Loved the Recommended Records shop in Wandsworth Street. Bought loads of great records from there! That’s place was like a gold mine for underground vinyl. The Recommended samplers are fantastic, they turned me on to groups like Univers Zero, Art Bears, The Work, Officer!, The Homosexuals and Art Zoyd

Great to see this unique footage - well done Zaikonik. I was fortunate to be working across the road at South Bank Poly (not MI5) and often dropped in to browse - when the shop was open (the opening hours were a bit of a mystery!)

1:29 Is that "Kew. Rhone" that's being zoomed in on?
@r.s.39572 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's the front cover of the album "KEW. RHONE." (by John Greaves, Peter Blegvad, Lisa Herman (and others)) and btw: the album in the box at 2:45 shows the backside of "Rē Records Quarterly Vol. 1 No. 3" (released in January 1986) I was in the store in December 1989 (while Chris Cutler happened to be there) 0:38 What's the record between Camberwell Now's "The Ghost Trade" and Henry Cow's "Concerts"?
@terrypussypower2 жыл бұрын
@@r.s.3957 Yeah, I met Chris Cutler at the store myself once, when he opened up on a Sunday when I’d travelled down from Glasgow to go on a spending spree in the shop, which was pretty decent of him! All in, I visited that store 6 times in total, which wasn’t bad considering I lived in Glasgow! Mail ordering was cool, but not a patch on actually going there.
@terrypussypower2 жыл бұрын
@@r.s.3957 The record between “The Ghost Trade” and “Concerts” is “Supply And Demand” by Dagmar Krause, her recordings of songs by Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler…..a great album! And if you like that one, her following LP, “Tank Battles, The songs of Hanns Eisler” is cool too.

God, I loved that shop! I used to travel down from Glasgow twice a year just to visit Recommended. It was like visiting a Santa's Grotto full of weird underground records. The best thing was they actually did recommend records to buy! I never listened to any of them in the shop, I just bought as many as I could afford and headed back up to Glasgow! Aye, brings back a lot of memories this does. There were some great views around there too. Battersea Power Station was within walking distance. And just across the river was the MI5 building, the one they blew up in that James Bond movie!
@charlieuliginosa24943 жыл бұрын
Opps, stumbled across this and found myself, a much younger man at work. Interesting to hear of the journey you made to visit the shop. We had buyers arriving from the 4 corners of the world but not in great numbers. I lived above the shop so it consumed my life for about 5 years. I returned in 1992 for a year to help out, by then it had become These Records. The 2 brothers who ran it then, relocated the business to Elephant and Castle, that was a smashing, short-lived shop premises. Did you ever go there? I'd like to know who shot this film.
@terrypussypower3 жыл бұрын
@@charlieuliginosa2494 It might have been yourself that opened the shop up for me one time I came down at the weekend, I called from Glasgow to find out opening times and the shop would’ve been shut when I got in from Scotland and whoever I spoke to said they’d open up specially which I thought was really obliging! It’s funny that the albums focused on in the video were ones I bought from the shop! The blue Dagmar Krause LP whose title escapes me, the Henry Cow live double, and the Cassiber LP! I recorded Cassiber, Peter Blegvad, The Lodge and Charles Hayward at the ICA on that trip too! Didn’t make it to the other shops, unfortunately.
