How wonderful. Australia's governor-general whose generous salary we Australian taxpayers fund - swears allegiance to a non-resident British national. I've got nothing against Charles and wish him the very best of health. I just find it ridiculous that a sovereign, independent nation like Australia still gets a foreign national with a bunch of meaningless, medieval titles and even more meaningless medals and ribbons, to be our official HoS.

@@mindi2050 Yes , I know about the Aus act which was passed in two parts, Australian parliament and the British parliament legally separating Australia's legal system from the Privy council in England. Irrelevant !! This makes Australia politically and legally independent from the UK , NOT fully sovereign. A country is not fully sovereign whilst it has another nation's HOS / Monarch as its head of state --- that is technically known as a client state , not a sovereign state.

@@mindi2050 Actually Australia is not just a member of the Commonwealth , it is officially a British Commonwealth "Realm" because it has Britain's King as HOS as does NZ , Canada and some small Caribbean countries. Most regular members of the Commonwealth are republics eg South Africa , India , Samoa etc. or have their own Monarchs eg Tonga !

The King has no personal discretion in these matters. He must follow the advice of the Australian Prime Minister. The reason why the Commission is countersigned by the Prime Minister is precisely to indicate that the Prime Minister, rather than the King, bears political responsibility for the appointment.

Quite ridiculous that a supposedly "independent nation" still has the King of another country, the UK , as its head of state and politicians etc swear allegiance to a British monarch. Along with British ensigns for flags it makes Australia still essentially an autonomous subsidiary of Britain , not a sovereign country!

They do not swear allegiance to any "British monarch", but rather to the King of Australia. who is the embodiment of the constitutional principles upon which the Australian system of government is based (a parliamentary government under the Crown). Even though the offices of King of the United Kingdom and King of Australia are occupied by the same physical person , they are two legally separate offices, subject to different legal and constitutional regulations.

You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig. Does not matter how it is dressed up legally, Australia's head of state is the British King and Australia is under the BRITISH Crown and officially a British Commonwealth Realm , so not technically sovereign ! Politically independent yes , but still not fully sovereign being under Britain's Crown.
