On your rugby journey there is only 1 name you need to know JONAH LOMU. The New Zealand (Kiwi) Legend. As an Englishman he tourmented us, but as a fan of pure rugby he was the first real example of size and speed devastating opposition teams that you had to admire and respect. Every time he was near the ball you expected something extraordinary whether in attack or defense. I am a 49ers fan and a certain P. Mahomes is giving me bad flashbacks to those times. Respect and expectation of enevitability.

A bunch of the great NFL players are also South Sea Islanders, Troy Polamalu was the one who sprang to mind, they tend to be big defensive types

One thing you may not have noticed with the "field goal" (drop kick in rugby) is that you have to let the ball bounce before kicking it, which makes it a lot harder.

Players do face off against each other a lot in Rugby, So long as it stays at "Handbags at dawn" and there are no punched thrown, it's kind of accepted as the Blood is up and the Adrenaline is pumping. If it does properly kick off then the officials will just stand back and let the players deal with it. And once there is calm, the Ref will call over the captains and the antagonists and talk through whats gong to happen, the Players refer to the Ref as Sir also. There is a Referee legend called "Nigel Owens" check out his best bits vids, All the players Just had huge respect for him.

A note to NFL followers or players. NFL Football has a defense team and offense team, whereas in Rugby League or Union, the same guys in the team attack and defend. No resting up here boys. Can you amagine a Quarter Back constantly defending? Probably not. These are brutal hits, no pads or helmets. You'd probably want double the pay too.

What NFL fans dont realize watching highlights is that once a tackle is made, the game continues, and a ruck is formed where both teams can compete for the ball. It's continuous play until a foul, a knock on, or the ball leaves the field of play and they do that for 40 mins a half. NFL is childs play compared to rugby.

The game does not stop when the ball hits the ground. UNLESS, it is ‘knocked on’ (knocked fowards), or there is some other infringement. When a player carrying the ball is tackled, he must release the ball, but the tackler must roll away. You should watch a video that explains the rukles from beginning to end. There are several on KZfaq. You cannot tackle a player who doesn’t have the ball. You can only pass backwards, or in line with any imaginary line across the field. When a ball carrier is tackledhe can hold onto the ball until a teammate gets there, but if an opposing player is on his feet and tries to take the ball, the ball must be released. If you miss a pass and propel the ball towards the opposition goal line, that’s called a ‘knock-on’. if an opposition player picks it up, the Referee will allow a certain amount of time (called Advantage) for the opposing team to mount an attack, but if they don’t manage to gain any advantage, he wil blow the whistle and a scrum is formed, with the opposition team getting the ‘scrum feed’ (this gives them a better chance of winning possession, as the ball is worked towards the back of the scrum by foot and tghen picked up by the last man in the scrum, or the halfback and then passed out along the line of ‘Backs’, where the fastest runners usually are. If the ball goes out of bounds (in Rugby it’s called; into touch) then several players from each team line up a metre (Yard) apart and the ball is thrown in from the sideline, down the middle of the two lines (hence this is called a ‘Lineout’) players from each side will jump to try and catch the ball and just like with a scrum, the ball is usually passed out along the line of ‘Backs’, who carry the ball downfield. The Game is played in two ‘Halves’ of 40 minutes each, with a 10 minute break at halftime. Otherwise, the game keeps going, unless there’s a scrum or a lineout, or a Penalty for a serious infringement. To score, you must touch the ball to the ground with downward pressure, in the goal area. this is called a ‘Try’, after which, a kick can be taken from a point in line with where the ball was grounded, as far back from the goal line as you like, as long as it is inline with where the ball was grounded. This is why you will often see someone cross the goal line and then keep running to try and get to a spot close to the goalposts, so the kicker has an easier shot. If the ball is grounded right next to the sideline, then the kick must be taken from a point the saem distance from the sideline, whicj is why the kicker will usually take the kick from quite a long way back, so as to give him a better angle. The ball must go between the uprights and over the cross bar. At any time during play, a player can try and make a field goal, which is done by dropping the ball onto the ground and kicking it a split second after it hits the ground. Such kicks are not common, as it is difficult to achieve them, but if it’s a close game and time is running out, a field goal may be enough to win the game. An English Rugby Union player called Johnny Wilkinson. I saw him kick a field goal in the pouring rain from the halfway lineand near the sideline, a distance of over 50 yards. He was an amazing player in the 90’s.

its not petty scoring the closest to the middle. Like in NFL after you score a try (touchdown in NFL) they also have a kick butt in rugby the kick is not always from the middle , it's from the vertical line from where you scored , so the farther it is from the middle, the harder the kick :P

You can see how much of American football comes from Rugby - like actually touching down. Also don’t have separate teams for offense, defiense and kicks.
