This is dangerous. Do not do these exercises. Look at how often the horse trips over the poles, it’s nearly every clip. And these are the clips they are showing you. Please, I implore you, just put your trot and canter poles straight and properly spaced for your horses stride.

Might add this applies to any horse you wish to teach to jump, not just ex-race horses. This horse has a very good trot for a TB it uses its hinds extremely well at all times, it also folds its front legs up very nicely over the jumps plus very good snappy back leg use over the jumps. It tended to get hot up to the jump so keeping it trotting up to all the jumps would've helped it stay calm and stop it learning to rush. Flat work prior to jumping is also critical. For the flat work this horse needed to be able eventually to extend his frame, open up the trot loosen up and develop relaxation and suppleness, at this moment he is getting quicker and quicker shorter and shorter instead of extending, this is making it hollow its back. The calmer they approach jumps the better they will use their back over the jump which here you can see is hollow over the jumps. Cavaletti before the jumps is also a good idea. Super lovely little horse, just hope it wasn't ruined hunting! Well that was six years ago I would love to see the horse now. Flatwork is extremely important, the basics of dressage is where you start. People are often far too quick with jumping when the ground work is not nearly efficient enough.

Thank you -I am shocked how many renown “trainers “ tell one to kick the horse . The last clinic I did the renown lady keep asking me to do this -I refused -my horse was backward because she did not trust the instruction the lady was giving me . Moved on and learned so much -my mare is much more forward now -soft on the aids because I’m doing much less and warming up (off her back ) and feeling her a lot more . We need more trainers/accomplished equestrians like you to teach us .

I got the D rings off, and got the gullet changed with difficulty, but now I can't get the saddle back together. frustrating

My horse literally only gets nappy when going from walk to trot(Hes NEVER reared, just stops or starts putting me into a wall or tree). Every other gate hes great, nicely engaged ect. I just think he doesnt want to work until hes going. But how the heck to i get him to cut the crap. He works great off verbal ques on the ground on lunge and in hand. I've been treating him for ulcers JUST INCASE its that but nothings improved. What im at now is i use my verbal and i just jingle my feet around until I annoy him forward. But its just very discouraging and im loosing confidence in my riding due to not even being able to get him to trot off 😭 I do want to add that this nappy not wanting to trot off started after he had almost a full month off due to 95 degree weather for 3 weeks straight. It's like he had that vacation and just decided he doesnt wanna work anymore. Where before that vacation he was literally a super star.
