Thanks for sharing. I think this need for a return spring is related to using the sonnax adjuster instead of the lokar kickdown linkage for the trans on the carb.

Running into this same problem right now with a Monster AOD in my F100. Too much internal oil pressure is causing the TV lever on the trans to not return back to the stop. I'll install a return spring today and check the pressure again.

Distributor shaft does need some end play, if end play is .024 - .035 I'd do .025. What happens when distributor shaft has too much end play is when your cruzing at 2,000 rpm's and suddenly step on it causing rpm's to jump up to 5,000. When you step on it like that if there's too much play the distributor shaft smacks up real hard with the sudden change in rpm's because distributor gear is designed to climb the Camshaft gear, so if you have a car and you constantly get on it, the repeated gear and shaft smacking up will causes the roll pin to sheer on the distributor gear, that means your engine will suddenly die while you're driving and you won't be able to start the engine because the distributor rotor won't be spinning when you're cranking the engine over. Before you install that distributor I would definitely add more shims to close the gap and save you a big headache in the future. The roll pin on the distributor gear is meant to sheer and prevent catastrophic damage to the engine in the event the Cam gear and Distributor gear bind, but even if a roll pin sheers, sometimes it can still cause damage to the teeth on both gears.

Mines got no lie.. promise at this point 1/8 inch play also dead as can be clicks the malfunction monitor. The upper and or OUTER rotor side bearing area isn't cut to specific spec anymore or schematics, we don't have..

Never Fear. BrokeAuto Is Here!!! lmao. If you don't know who this is, this is Tony from RCH. I have multiple channels and I felt this channel best suited your issues haha. I didn't figure my Z28 channel would fit here although that would have been pretty funny. So with that, I will leave the "because it's a ford" jokes alone :-) First thing that came to mind (I have watched all 3 of the videos you have posted by the way. I'm commenting on all of them here) when I was hearing the car trying to idle was timing which You have already been playing with. In watching those videos, I never once saw a timing light... Do you have a timing light? If not, get one! They are invaluable for these kinds of diagnostics. Connect it up and find out where your car is firing on #1. Second thing, are you ABSOLUTELY SURE you are at TDC on #1 with the 0º mark lined up with your pointer? It never stated in the description that you checked this. I know you did a valve check, but those can be off by as much as 15º depending on what cam is in the engine. The best way to do this is get a BBQ Skewer (no, not to eat food with, your making me hungry now..) and remove the #1 plug and stick that stick in the hole. Wood will not harm the engine and if you do shed a piece off, it will turn into carbon, no harm done. Turn the crank until you know you are coming up on #1 combustion stroke (rotor under the cap will be slightly before the #1 plug wire). Now, watch that stick VERY CLOSELY! Once it stops coming out of the hole (you should have your finger on the end of it pushing against the piston), STOP turning the crank. Note the mark on the balancer with your new fangled MSD tape (adds 10 hp having that tape on there BTW...). Now, once you have noted where it stopped, keep turning ever so slightly and notice when the stick starts to go down and again, note where you are at on your tape. Take those two places and average them together and you should be at the 0 mark which will tell you definitely that you are at TDC on #1 on the combustion stroke. If you are not, you need to adjust your tape and/or take the front cover off the engine to see if the timing chain slipped. Unlikely, but still a possibility. Okay, we are absolutely sure timing is okay at this point (do the above first). Now where is your compression at? Are you within 10% on all cylinders? This can cause issues, but not likely the cause of this issue. It's just something that I like to check. Next, have you drained your oil to look for fine metal shavings? I'm guessing this is a hydraulic flat tappet cam in which case if it was not broke in with an oil with a high concentration of zinc at about 2000rpm for 20 minutes could have flattened a lobe on your cam. Again, unlikely but worth checking into, especially if you need to do an oil change. The final thing that I would check in this instance (okay, maybe not the last...) is the carburetor. You are running a Holly carb which most use a Power Valve. I saw in the first video the engine backfire through the intake which kills power valves almost instantly. There are mods you can do that are called "Power Valve Savers" that can help save them from backfires, but they do not always work. Check your power valve. It's the first thing I check when I'm getting an idle issue with a Holly carb. Have you done any work to anything on the ignition side? (told you maybe not the last...). If so, are you 100% sure you put the wires on correctly? It's easy to cross a wire or two, everyone does it. Have you looked at your plugs? What color are they? If they are black, you are too rich, if they are white you are too lean, they should be a shade of a darker brown. Given what you have posted in these videos, I'm guessing they are going to be on the blacker side of the color chart. Black is going to almost definitely point to the power valve. Oh, and check for vacuum leaks mainly in the brake booster line if you have power brakes. Just pull the line off the booster and plug it, or plug it at the carb. In fact, just to rule out a vacuum leak, plug all ports on the carb and intake. You are not going to have vacuum advance for checking timing, but it will help rule out a vacuum leak. Hope this helps and hope you and the family are doing good!
