The name Rand is a Afrikaans word meaning ridge. North of the center of Johannesburg is a ridge known as "Witwatersrand" meaning Ridge of Water. It was the main water supply when gold was discovered there.

Hey Ken, as my father lived in St. George the last 30 years of his life, I was able to visit Silver Reef over and over and took many photos. The old Protestant graveyard has been restored to a more modern and well kept graveyard over the last 10 years or so. However I have some very interesting photos I have taken when it was back in it's original condition. Get with me if you are intereted in seeing some of those.

It's a old world building/ruins from prior reset that was mudflooded. The majority of the structure is buried underground...we just repurpose the top part which is why you see old world structures in the downtown areas that have windows half in the ground and brick buildings that look like they are slanted instead of level. Half the building in underneath so they added ramps or steps that were not original to the building so that we could use them. Look closely at the old town buildings casting aside the narrative of all these buildings being built in a short period of time in the 1800's using only a horse and buggy to haul all the materials and without power tools....recalibrate and use your eyes and critical thinking skills...ask God to revel the truth.

Back when my daughter had turned 16, my husband and I drove west on I-80 from our home in Magna, UT. We were going to visit the historic airport where, during WWII, the Army Air Corp trained to be able to drop the first nuclear bomb. What we didnt tell her was when we took a side trip, ending up on the Salt Flats. My husband stopped the car and we got out. Looked at the Salt and how flat it was, then told our daughter, while handing her the keys to the car, and said, "Drive!". She could literally drive anywhere and not have an accident or worry about other vehicles. In fact, when Ray Charles performed in Salt Lake City, his friends drove him out to the Salt flats and let him drive. He had a blast. And so did my daughter. 😮

Omg! My family used to go camping there in the early 1970’s with the, “Ventura County Bottle Club”. I remember driving up this big mountain on a 1 way dirt road & us kids would be all scared if another truck was going in opposite direction. I also remember the Saloon, I could see inside & there was still a coat hanging & bottles on the bar. We weren’t allowed to get to close I think cuz the stairs weren’t safe. It was like 9k foot elevation & took a long time to drive up the mountain…

Everyone remembers Gridley, but not the Mayor that won. 250K then amounts to an estimated 3.5 Million now. That is Memorable. Nevada was my home for over 17yrs. I raised ny son there and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I suspect Austin is a desirable area to visit and live.

We live in Boise and have visited Silver City several times. There were too many ATVers and dirt bikers everywhere making loud noises and creating dust. We were annoyed. Silver City is a nice historical place and we sure enjoyed its history. Hope those noise and dust makers not there though. I even got a few books about Silver City and other Idaho ghost towns and we were fascinated. Visited Delamar and Ruby city but there hardly anything left anymore.

My brother bought a lot for camping half way between here and centerville. Roughly 4 miles out of town. They ended up building a cabin and moved up there in 2020. I also worked a mine for a few years out of Pionerville about 12 northeast of here. The area is very much alive but nothing like its heyday. It is growing however.

I went to school there in the 60's. We lived in Jackpot and rode a bus to Contact. There were two teachers in the two room school, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers I believe. Coal stove for heat, outhouses for boys and girls. After a couple years a new school was built in Jackpot. One of the teachers there was Mr. Hansen. Great memories.

We've been there quite a few times, the last was August of 2015. We brought our daughter and three of our grandsons, all about 11-12 years old. We had always enjoyed our previous visits there and thought our grandsons would have fun.Naturally we headed straight to the fossils and had a good time, talk g lots of pictures. The was a park ranger tbere. He was an older man. One of my grandsons asked him a question about the fossils, but the ranger refused to speak to him. We left and went to Berlin. We found a picnic table and sat down to eat our lunch suddenly the ranger appeared , got out of his truck, walked within 20 feet of us and just stood there staring at us. My husband asked if there was a problem. The ranger never changed expression. He said "No". We finished our meal and left him standing there. While exploring Berlin we could see him in the distance, watching us. My husband swore he heard banjos so we left. I have to say that this happened nine years ago. I can't imagine what there was about us that caused the ranger to follow us around, but I think its wise for visitors to be aware of their surroundings and the people you encounter. Other than the odd experience, I highly recommend Berlin and Icthyosaur Park. Bring plenty of food and water. The closest town is Gabbs.

This was awesome! My grandfather and dad worked for the Superior Coal Co. My dad went to high-school there and played football for the Superior Dragons. He quit school at 16 and went to work in the mine, where his dad was already working. That would have been around 1951. Thanks for the video! Brought back nice memories!
