There's something about this that feels like it's trying way too hard to be different. Like, yes, the guy playing SpongeBob is not Ethan, we shouldn't expect him to be Ethan, he should be doing his own take on SpongeBob. But they've lost something in trying to do their own take. SpongeBob just feels like a nerdy caricature, and doesn't have the sweet vulnerability that i feel like the character needs to draw you in. The costuming adds onto that feel. Ethan's costume invoked SpongeBob, yes, but it was mundane, a gingham shirt, plaid pants, a knited tie, boots. You could raid a thrift store and make the outfit. But this guy is over designed. The whole thing feels over designed. TLDR: This wasn't the best first impression, and i feel like they're missing a big element of what made the musical work for me.

PBS kids is where I grew up so more theme songs from kid shows there would be great, however my big request is Wild Kratts

BEAUTIFUL IS THE BEST OPENING SONG EVER CHANGE MY MIND! It introduces all the main players except JD, it gives us Veronica's motivation and a backstory so we know how she ended up with the Heathers and why. That, and it's a beautiful song that really does feel like high school. "Why do they hate me? Why don't I fight back? Why do I act like such a creep?"

I suggest to just watch horrible histories at the proms, all the classics are in that and some great sketches too. also i just think the live orchestral versions of the songs sound better, especially Cleopatra. Also the Horrible histories proms are on BBC iPlayer and reuploads are on KZfaq

ok so i didn’t fact check this but i’m pretty sure that brian darcy james left the next to normal cast pre-broadway to do shrek and then left the hamilton pre-broadway cast to do something rotten. the funny coincidence is that both shows he left pre-broadway turned out to be pulitzer prize winning musicals! absolutely love him though!

Welp 6:58 you definitely have to do a video reacting and ranking these songs and "no prob Bob" and "Dizzy" must be top tier.

I think animation and musicals are a perfect match. Musicals need a suspension of disbelief already, since theres no way ppl would just burst into song complete with backing vocals, choreography and musical accompaniment coming from nowhere irl. With animation, you dont expect it to be realistic, you could do all these crazy visuals that make absolutely no sense but enhance the experience and convey the emotion/story better. It doesnt feel weird at all when the music picks up and they burst into song. Also, I would appreciate it if you reserve judging the whole series and how it works when you havent even seen the other songs (not all of them are pop, theres actually quite a variety, which is nice) or watched the show ("how well does the musical format work?") Idk the way you instantly started judging not even 10 seconds into a song was not it for me. Its like you already had a negative perception of the show beforehand and so youre expecting it to be bad. You seemed thrown off by NPH's clothes at the beginning. He was playing a character from a broadway play from that year, but I don't remember the play. The set at the beginning, with the man standing up and introducing him as a "someone new"....I don't remember the play but that's why he was dressed that way...he was in a costume from that show. LOVED what you said about this being NPH's love letter to Broadway. Perfect.
