Yeah, the cool thing about having all these tuning offsets now, or the ones Allen Garber has shared, is being able to try those out. Eddie wasn’t keeping a spreadsheet of tunings or anything. After a while, you kind of figure out how to tune it so everything sounds intonated as best as possible. I like to also do what he was showing here, check the Bs, and Ds on the neck, open chords, making sure the B and E strings are nicely intonated with each other at the 5th and 12th, things like that. I’m sure if you analyzed things like that, that a lot of us do, it would be similar to what Eddie was doing. You can’t do that live, on the fly. So, having the exact cents to tune to would come in handy. Even though I’m not doing all that in my tribute band. The only song I sweeten the tuning is with running with the devil, and I could do that with my fine tuners, without no reference at all. I’ll the B string a nice quick counterclockwise turn, and it’s right there.😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸

He doesn’t like the Origin 50 I just got, but at least I use those black jazz IIIs also, ha ha. I hadn’t played through Marshals in a long time, so I’m digging the Origin for the tone-and for what I am mostly playing now, in my Van Halen tribute.

Going to see the show this weekend, and can’t wait! And I agree this may be the last time we get to hear these songs live! I hope not, but you just never know! And lets be honest, their will never be another Edward Van Halen, but Joe is fully capable of doing the songs justice and for one, I hope the guitar parts aren’t note for note the way Eddie did them. I’d rather here Joe do them justice than try and copy Eddie note for note

I'm from Newcastle, England where Mike lived when in Venom/cronos, and like most rock musicians of my vintage in Newcastle, know Jim Clare and Jeff Dunn, both also great guys. Was on a bill with Mike in 92 when he was in Cronos and he was as down to earth then as he seems now too. Been subscribed to you for years Jeff, great to see how your channel has grown 🤘

This is going to seem random..but in the last 15 or 16 minutes, the guys mention Christone Ingram. Man..that dude can play. I remember when and how I was introduced to him. It was on Nikki Sixx's old radio or youtube showoo (I can't remember which one)..but it was years ago. The dude is an amazing young talent. However, the cat needs an intervention. People who care about him need to talk to him about getting his health in check. We need that dude around making music for many more years. Already being morbidly obese in your early 20s does not turn out well. This might seem random...but I only say this because I am a fan of the dude and I care. He needs serious help...and NOW.

I don’t know, Eric Gales really stood out when I saw him up there jamming and battling with Joe in this one video. That may have been where I first discovered Eric, just a few years ago online. A more pure Blues player like Eric, his tone will always cut through more than a heavier type of shredder ‘blues,’ like Joe.

Another great guest and discussion! The brief topic of Ed’s guitars (Frankenstein) in particular being out of whack- I have a theory that guitars that are laboring to play lends to having to struggle giving the performance a more dramatic or emotional quality. Same with the feel SRV gave us with his main guitar based on info I’ve read over the years having ridiculous action with heavy gauge strings.

It's not really a debate if ed was "systematically" sweetening his tunings. He specifically tuned up 25-30 cents for many albums and tours, and there are several pictures clear enough to at least make out the fact that his Peterson was set to that. As for "systematically", he may not have totally nerded out on the cents for each string (definitely not to the tenth of a cent) but he was definitely sweetening by ear which just comes naturally with a ear-tuning and a good ear. Allen's offsets look daunting when you don't understand them, but if you do a little math you will find that most of them are just a standard tuning, transposed a certain amount of cents up or down, and then a few strings are slightly tweaked to make chords sound better. The offsets are simply a way to get in tune with the recordings.
@heyjarrod
@heyjarrod 5 күн бұрын
I don’t remember him tuning ‘up,’ on any early albums? The only song that comes to mind that was tuned up (to standard… from the usual detuning), was Hot For Teacher. Maybe you were referring to something else, as I can see that you’re obviously well-versed in tuning offsets. I was just wondering. Thanks! 😝🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸
@msw812
@msw812 5 күн бұрын
I had been doing that all along since I first picked up the guitar as a young kid. I never liked how my tuner set that B string up. So I instinctively tweaked it to sound good to my ear and just figured it’s cuz I had a piece of sh## guitar. But Garber’s findings are fascinating and like an official standardization for those who never “sweetened” the tuning by ear like you said.
@tanneryordan
@tanneryordan 4 күн бұрын
@@heyjarrod Almost every song on the first few albums is tuned above half-step down, by either 15-ish cents, 25ish cents, etc. His live tuning was closer to the 25-30 cents above half-step down range. 25 cents above half step down is a massive difference and is the reason so many people sound out of tune to the backing tracks. Like I said in my original comment, there are a few pictures showing ed backstage with his Peterson strobe tuner. while none of them are clear enough to see the exact cent setting, you can at least make out that he has the knob set to 25-30 cents above "A440". The worst offender of this would be "Push comes to shove". If you try to play that in standard, you will be way out of tune.
@tanneryordan
@tanneryordan 4 күн бұрын
@@msw812 Yes! if you have a decent ear it should be noticeable that guitars are "out of tune" when you play triads in the 7th position area. Like I said, allen's offsets at a first glance are daunting because it's tough for people to grasp, but in reality it's just a standard tuning (not standard as in E tuning) with slightly tweaked strings.

a lot of these notable players who take flack from the community, IMO, it seems to have more to do with their personalities, level of humility, entitlement etc. hell it even comes down to personal charisma. eds guitar playing got him to the top of the heap, the other stuff , grin included, kept him there.. yngwies playing made players go whoa. the other stuff made you wanna slash his tires. i think most of us realize that our personalities come out in our playing. it factors in to our regards more than most realize. what we all should appreciate is that these guys are all still strapping it on & slinging it night after night. if not for them taylor swift would be on the cover of guitgod magazine.

I say Eddie like to tune flat a little bit go remove some brightness from the open chord sounds, then he had to tune to the chords being used, and if that down tune drifted a little bit, it was just Michael on bass to tune to him. 😊 the strobe tunner will show you the inconsistencies of guitar tuning, 😊
