How do you stop the puppies from eating the pellets?
@growingpuppies1773
@growingpuppies1773 11 күн бұрын
@@roxannahegglund5770 we didn’t have an issue with puppies eating them since we used pellets before they started eating food and they knew the difference. I also feed the puppies so often in the day they aren’t hungry enough to try that. But they do sell potty trays that have an iron grate over the top. I bought those last season and they worked great. The puppies can’t step in the dirty pellets.

I came home to a dead Bassett hound puppy yesterday. ( 3 months old) I put her in her crate when I went to Walmart. When I came home she was dead. She was in an xlarge wire crate. She somehow busted through the side( corner ) where it folds and severed her stomach. I've been grooming dogs 30 years & never seen anything like it. 😢it's awful 😖 crates can be VERY dangerous. I only had her 1 1/2 weeks.

So you can use a litter box and cat litter to train puppies
@growingpuppies1773
@growingpuppies1773 5 ай бұрын
No you cannot NOT use cat litter to train puppies. The cat litter is clay based and if a puppy accidentally ingested the clay it would cause a blockage. The PINE pellets that we use turn into sawdust when they get wet. So if a puppy accidentally ingested a few they would pass right through. This year We are now putting a grate over our litter trays. Mostly so the litter doesn’t get knocked all over…but there is the added advantage that no litter is ingested. But after using this method for over a decade we have had no problems.

She’s beautiful, Mary. I hope she has a relatively easy time of it. A friend of mine adopted a stray who turned out to be pregnant . The first time I met Penny, I took one of my dog’s BarkBox toys as a present. Jenny was with Penny while she was giving birth, which apparently was quite painful. During a lull, Penny got out of the birthing box, found the toy I gave her, and took it back in the box.

Alfalfa pellets also work well. But be careful about store bought litter because if s puppy accidentally swallowed regular litter it would cause a blockage. We start this training when they are eating food and feed regular meals so they don’t eat it.

We need help! We have an 8 month old Boston pup that will not go potty outside and I am wanting to train her to use a litter box. Pads are not an option as she loves to eat paper towels. I am afraid she will eat any pellets we get. She eats everything, esp. sticks from outside. She eats everything! Her favorite thing is spinach! lol Loves all vegies. I am disabled and cannot take her out, her daddy has to do that. He's not always here to help take care of us. We tried to keep her in the pen...only lasted a few days until she yelped and started messing in it and getting pee/poop all over herself. She is also now lame in one back leg that is not fixable...so we are just besides ourselves. When my hubby takes her out, regardless of how long they stay out she comes in and potties. Very frustrated and need help! Glad you have good luck.

Oh dear, I apologize that I am late responding. That is a loaded question since I don't know your dogs set up. Does it use a crate or is it confined to a nap during naptime. There is so much that has to be in place. Look at the video of my potty training schedule, so that you start with that first. When your puppy knows the go potty on command you can tell her to go potty on the tray. But at 8 months there are a lot of habits in place and this will take a discussion to know what your situation is.

@@growingpuppies1773 I don't even know where to start. Thanks for your supportive comment! Tsetse is going to be a year old at the end of this month. And she is not trained at all. The worse issues we have is aggressive behaviors, destruction of valued antique chairs and such, and biting us. attacking us at times. She still goes outside on a leash with Bill...but comes in and goes on the floor. Even after a nice long walk. Before we even went to look at puppies after my husband and I were unsuccessful at finding a small middle aged dog at the shelters (we looked for months! so hard to find smaller dogs for adoption). I fell for one at the humane soc. and I am still mourning not being able to get him. They told us at the counter that he was spoken for and nothing would change their minds even though I was blubbering and standing there shattering before them. I hope his new owner loves him as much as I would have. Bill will not follow any of the research I did for many hours on how to train a pup. To crate train her...he thinks that is cruel. I think it makes perfect sense. Instead he puts her in his bed and closes all the doors leading into the rest of the house...I know this is long, but I appreciate you listening. I can't fix this as this is HIS dog. She kinda loves me, but only if he is away from home. And at times she has attacked me. She's not big, but neither am I! I am not able to keep up with her, so it is better that she is confined in the nice bedroom and I go in and check on her. Sometimes I do lay down with her, but usually not. It's sad, but it is what it is. I still have hope for her. If anything were to happen to my husband I would adopt her out...Should have gotten a cat! I told him so!

@@lorenrobertson8039 oh dear. It’s your husband that needs dog training before the dog can be trained. But as you said, it is his dog. So he is in charge. But honestly that is terrible that the dog is aggressive to you. Hubby should get training in how to address this or he should not have a dog. It’s just not fair to you. I am sorry you are going through this. But I guess you are being patient with it. In my house I am the dog trainer and my husband knows that I understand dogs. My dogs love their crates and will take naps there in their own. But the older a puppy gets…the harder it is to break bad habits. Good luck to you. Hope you are doing well otherwise.

@@growingpuppies1773 She bites him too, sometimes it's play, but at other times it's a strange aggression...I think we are too old to give her enough exercise tbh. If it were up to me we would re-home her and get us a nice older cat that we could love on and give a good home to. We do love her and give her a lot of attention and positive reinforcement. When able we play with her...but she tore up all of the toys we got her but two hard ones. I'm going to order her some more sturdy ones for her upcoming birthday. Thank you for speaking with me!!! You are a blessing. I am trying to train her. But unless we are both using the same words and behaviors it won't help train her much. He loves her so much...I know she will grow up to be a good companion one day. She is well fed, well loved, and we have a lot of patience with her. It is not a hopeless situation. Pray for all the folks dealing with major flooding and tornado devastation. ty

We lost a puppy from eating pine pellets. He threw them up and aspirated. It was so tragic. We feed our puppies several times a day. We now always use grates over our trays so puppies don't have access to the pads or pellets. I know of others that have lost their puppies due to eating pellets too. Be very careful.
@growingpuppies1773
@growingpuppies1773 7 ай бұрын
I have been using them for 12 years and my puppies don’t eat them. It may be a breed difference. Or it could be the way they are introduced to them ….who knows. I did get grates this past season so the puppies won’t play in the pellets. So it is even less of a concern. But each breeder has to monitor their own puppies. There is a risk to almost anything in a pen so we spend a lot of time watching our puppies to be sure they are safe.

I have never had puppies eating pine pellets. I have been using them for 12 years. I am on many breeder groups and many breeders…and perhaps most breeders who use with great safety and success. But you do what is best for your puppies. If your puppy did not grow up associating pine pellets with litter then perhaps that is a different situation. Did your vet advise you against using plastic potty pads? Those are much more dangerous. I am advocating for a much safer method.
