#askgmbntech Thought I'd ask, I may be a bit behind in the latest, where's Doddy? Is Doddy on holiday/break? Did he leave? Thank you GMBN for being a massive part of my mountain biking journey. (I watch the GMBN Tech show and The Dirt Shed show when I can.)

"need" is a bit of a jump. I never ride with one unless I'm going miles from the car.

E*13 Got their name from the exit on the freeway that they had to take on their way to the office. Exit 13. Thanks for another great show. I am intersted to hear how many tools otherr riders need to maintain their MTBs. IMO, too many but then what excuse would we have to keep tinkering... 😂

E*thirteen comes from Exit 13 on Interstate 95 in Massachusetts.

I've got nearly every bike tool you need Inc SRAM and Shimano bleed kits. I prefer to use the right tool for the right job..I haven't got a truing stand(yet) or a headset press. ( U can use a G clamp and wood) I work on nearly everything myself Inc suspension. Bike wheels are the only thing I take to a bike shop at the moment. You should know how things work so you can fix/ bodge it if they break on trail..

I liked my gravel bike until I got a 29er mtn bike, now I don't think gravels are much better than an expensive novelty

When I'm out on the trails, I just bring a multi-tool (with chain breaker), air pump, spare tube, pair of tire levers, spoke wrench & water bottles, all inside my fannypack. At home, I have all the tools, except a truing stand, to breakdown my mtb.

I find it hillarious that the difference between 28 inch and 29 inch wheels is in the tire and not the rim as these rims have the exact same diameter. No wonder people get confused. 🙄

#quiz e*thirteen was named by the original founders (remember Dave Weagle he was one of them...) after Exit 13 on the i-95 leading to Boston. Interestingly it supported the whole East Coast v West Coast thing at the time... which is rather ironic considering it was bought by The Hive and is now based in Petaluma a stone's throw away from Marin Mountain Bikes HQ in Sonoma County, Caliifornia (yes Marin is based in Sonoma...not Marin....).

I always use dakine seeker 18 (22) hydrapack + tools + 🔊 for music, and rain jacket + some eat stuff.. Back in 2009, my first backpack was from Dakine 18l with a hydration pack, and since then it has worn out, in 22 I updated it to a new model already on rails. Greetings from Russia!

Very good video, but I don't think you are right about the 'flexstay' design. It's there to replace the bearing and decrease weight, it won't do anything for the end of your travel.

I've got 10 gears on my mtb. When I change my gear between 5th and 6th gear, I hear a clicking noise when changing my gears. Has anyone got any idea what can be the problem 🤔?

First off. I love the show. You guys do a great job. Second, I am a bike geek with a shop at home.(A lot of tools) Third, a video I would love and would be helpful ; Take the Geometron Bike and build it in ways it was NOT intended to be built. For Example, 150 Front and 200 rear, or Short rear and long Front. The data behind geometry and suspension would be interesting. How does the data translate into experience for the average Joe? Cheers

There are quite a few things that could have been done to counter the cons presented. For starters, angle the seat so it's not a damn dildo? Lmao And for everyone talking about how this is going to rip the headset off, someone needs to show me the math behind that, because that seems ridiculous. Also, the comment about the budget brakes bothered me. I have a hard time believing those brakes can't lock the wheels, and if they can lock the wheels, then the issue is tire grip.

I'm slowly building my tool collection as I learn. What is the answer for bike shops? My fav shop is over an hour away, great guys and service but they are selling over priced Specialized and Santa Cruz. Their service is top notch but I can't justify buying a bike from them when I could get better for less.

@OwenCoutts "Owen, you have become my go-to guy when I do maintenance on my bike. Even though this was an older video, I used it to tune up my bike for an epic charity ride coming up. First time I attempted the rear derailleur - was very nervous about it. Worked out SUPER! You have been a well deserved addition to the GMBN team and I am becoming a huge fan!! Thanks for this."

#QUIZ E*Thirteen derived its name for an East coast Exit 13 on i95 in Massachusetts along with a term "I got Exited 13 from a race" and they shortened it to E*Thirteen - Exit was a bit negative for a component manufacturer.

Going back to bike shops. I think bike companies should sell online direct to consumer to keep the prices low. Unfortunately these bike shops should then hopefully just cater to bike repair/service instead of sales. Just like car mechanics. Not everyone takes their car to where they bought it.

Make your own tools, especially for those used infrequently.... Crown race installer, bearing press, PF & head set cup remover, adjustable crowsfoot wrench for 3/8" drive rachet, cone spanners etc.

I lean toward Owen as far as tools like to be able to work on my own stuff but, like many parts to have just few common size fasteners to keep it simple for trail fixes. Oh by the way Owen might of had a hair or 2 out of place. Also Remember I said able not have to😄!
