I guess I have a love / hate relationship with stuff like this. I completely get people's "oh my god! why!" reaction, but there's also a case to be made for not having an irrational obsession with clinging to the past just because something is both old and there. That place likely is riddled with expensive problems and is sitting on valuable land. If you remove nostalgia from the equation and look at it on paper, it's a pro vs con list of demo vs rebuilding something new the way you want it and without a commitment of constant headaches and repairs.
