My first Golden Retriever had a retained canine tooth ( I can't quite remember how old she was, probably around 6-7 months old). The vet said if it didn't come out, then they'd have to surgically remove it. Luckily, giving her some additional new things to chew on, it came out on its own 😊.

totally agree, I always thought labs were insanely dull dogs but since getting one she is awesome and I love that she's so tolerant but like the book said, not soft. she'll defend herself if she needs to, but she generally if a dog tries to attack her but she'll just try to get out of the way and not even so much as bark

When I take my dog out, I let her walk me. She’s a Catahoula, and loves smelling everything, and exploring, so I let her go and smell everything she wants.

I’m on my second Catahoula, a female. My first one was a male. The female loves everything and everybody, until you try taking her bone or eat her food. The male was more standoffish, but super loyal. Both male and female are wonderful, and I’d get another one in a heartbeat.

I read in an article that it wasn’t her home and the dogs belonged to her grandson. The dogs were known to be leery of visitors. They went to see her grandson and he wasn’t home. The dogs were young, under a year with one older dog. They were attacked by all four dogs. She was 69 and her husband over 70. I liked what you said, don’t own a dog you can whip.

All beautiful dogs but your lab is a stud

I guess there are several reasons in play. In the city it's boring for my dog, so she's open for any kind of impulse rather than walk disciplined on the leash. Also she's pretty young (18mo) so she doesn't have the right pulse control. Last but not. least, she is full of energy and doesn't have the opportunity to burst off the energy in the first place. The longer our walk takes the better she's with the leash :)

I have no dog in the fight (pun intended), but regardless of the breed, when you add another breed entirely to get the buzz word dogs like “very rare”, “New Color” “Double Extra Large” & “King Size” & sell more Puppies. I DONT personally care, but when you add a Weimaraner to Labradors to get that silver color, unless you’ve bred 5+ generations of pure labs back in, it’s still a mixed breed dog. I’m sure they’re all great dogs & are just as lovable as every other dog. But lately the White & Silver Dobermann, Red Rottweiler, & Now Merle APBT. Your analogy about the occasional “whoops breeding” isn’t the norm, it’s occasional. Since they started DNA verification with studs bred over a certain #, there’s less & less of that. Again, I don’t care either way what color they are as long as they’re good dogs. There has been changes to breed standards in every breed since breed standards became. But in order to GET & KEEP that new color or size or whatever there’s a ton of inbreeding or tight linebreeding, so their lines better be free of serious health problems. I’m not a any breed purist. I Bred Rottweilers for decades & crossed the show & working lines all the time, in my opinion if it’s a good dog, its a good dog. But the Fad or Flavor of the month usually creates more problems than solutions, especially if you are trying to keep that totally different new color, size, coat, hairless, & so on. It’s a double edge sword. Me personally, if someone wants that, I don’t care either way. Just be prepared for health & temperment issues if it’s not an accidental mix Breed or outcross, or at least be aware that you may have some serious issues down the road.

GSD. Summer, keep clean, aired and dry. I used medicated wash for fungal infection and then dried him THOROUGHLY then put anti fungal powder (from pharmacy/drug store) on the spot.

Ringworm and Mange can start off as a bald, red itchy spot/s, hot spot on dog is like heat rash on a human. Keep it dry and cool, be careful about ointments that don’t allow it to breathe. Thoroughly dry your dog after swimming and remove their collars when in the house so the skin can breathe under there. Cooling mats are awesome for summer lounging. Chlorhexidine wash Vetricyn spray Ringworm ointment (OTC human) Tea Tree and Neem Oil combo works great for Scabies “mange” contagious to humans ( make sure they can’t lick these) I keep all various types in my pet first aid kit Use a soft/inflatable cone to keep them from getting to the spots

Yellow labrador happened during her second heat. I had to put a cone on her and used some otc hotspot treatment. Went away as soon as she was done her heat.

Had my black lab retain one , so I was a the meat market we go to and I got the biggest bone they had a leg bone took it home gave it to him . Both of the boys started chewing on it and next morning tooth was gone but they were happy labs . Cost for bone $1.00

This is so insightful and helpful in understanding my American Labrador. His name is Oslo. I used to wonder why he seems so different from my other Labrador (a bench bred) who crossed the rainbow bridge due to parvo. His name was Koko; he's the chillest boy, doesn't bark much, would lay down pretty much all day. While Oslo's up and about all the time, ready to fetch any time of the day, acts like velcro dog waiting for the next task or activity. Now I fully understand why they're so different, not that I'm comparing. But it helps me understand them better much less know how to meet Oslo's needs and give him the best life possible. Thank you! You hit the nail on the head when you said that there are lots of fake dog trainers out there and I am seeing more and more people that think they are correctly training protection dogs and all they are really doing is building what could become a major tragic incident . I am a firm believer in people need to really think it through when they are going to bring any animal into their home by knowing that they can handle a certain breed of ( dog) , and i could list a number of things that people do not take into consideration when obtaining a new pet. I started training dogs at 12yrs old , with the Columbus all breed training club here in Ohio and I am 62 now , so I have been training , breeding and showing dogs of many breeds for 50 yrs and I still have so much more to learn . This is why I subscribe to to people like you , so I can continue to gain some wisdom . If people would realize that different breeds of dogs are different in many ways and not only do dogs learn from people , but they also learn from other surrounding dogs , then I can't help but to believe that there would be less tragic happenings

I had a rescue boxer from a situation where the dog just didn’t mesh with the rest of the pack and the management style; he was great for me… until he wasn’t. Gradually he got more aggressive around other dogs, then suspicious around other people. We changed our walks to places where no one else walked, and I was extremely careful; I no longer trusted him out in public, though he never showed signs of aggression toward me. One day he went into convulsions and we rushed to the vet; he had a high temp and couldn’t stand either. He stayed at the vet’s overnight, and I hoped for some certainty about what was wrong. He hadn’t improved and we put him down early the next morning. The vet said that given all the symptoms it was either a tumor or lesion on the brain stem. Sometimes the cause is organic, and not a behavioral thing at all.

This my thoughts, Has you said we need to understand what your dog needs, I have a 3yr chocolate labrador working line, Does matter how long the car drive is 15min or 3hrs he will take a pee, when i let him out of the car. Going on a walk he will pull for the first 10-20 mins has he sniffs everything till he has done his No2, then he walks just fine. I think the advice in this video is the best i have seen on Utube.

Does anyone know why my female Lab always carefully sniffs a treat for several seconds before eating it? I'm never seen a dog before be so careful about eating. I can only guess this has something to do with training/selection for "Only come back with the fresh birds, not the ones that have been dead for a while."

An uncomfortable truth in breeding is that in order to keep breeding high-quality dogs, you need to retire and rehome the older dogs. You also have to be selective with the ones you keep. In dog training, an uncomfortable truth is that you have to actually take the time to do it. It doesn't happen over night or with one session.

We do avoid those areas, big sticks, lots of noise but if feral they may attack you too. Pepper spray but practice so not to spray your dog or self. Use bear type so it reaches far.

Oh hell no. When my field Lab was a 16 month old puppy she lost her mind and was a real handful. My grandson said, “You need to get a shock collar for her.” I said,”Pardon me? What did you say?” He replied, somewhat reluctantly, “Maggie needs a shock collar, I’m telling you.” I said, “I’ll tell you something, Jack. You bring that up again and you’ll be the only one around here wearing a shock collar, boy.” My Lab has settled down beautifully and I’ll still occasionally threaten my grandson with a shock collar. But since he’s an 18 year old offensive lineman who has about 100 pounds on me, I think he’s not altogether terrified. 😂

Being a responsible dog owner is second in work, time, and commitment only to parenting. Both are deeply rewarding, but more work and worry than bargained for-and neither come with guarantees, except at some point in the process, you will get your heart broken. Owning, training, loving Labradors is a privilege and a joy, but oh me, the sorrow when I have to say goodbye.

I don't know hardly anything about these matters except I thought the German Shepherd appeared to be in pain when he walks. You never said anything about that one way or another, but after watching Teddy today I want to believe that what appears to my eyes to be a painful deformity is just a variation of "normal". As long as its not painful for him to walk, then I won''t judge.

We had a Yellow lab that had a retained baby tooth. The vet recommended it be removed which we did. The cost was around $250.

Similar to other commenter's, one of my current 2 Labs, now 2.5 yrs old, had double canines at 6-7 months. Knowing they needed to come out, abd assuming it wasn't such a bug deal (i.e., didn't see the need to bring him to the vet), I 'helped' him lose the 2 canines by giving bones to chew and by literally wiggling the teeth for him (they were so solidly in there thus I wasn't forced to bring to the vet. Ivr also had friends who've had smaller breeds, including chihuahua's that had a full set of extra teeth. That particular friend ended up having to pay a couple grand to have the entire set of baby teeth pulled so the pup was left only with their adult teeth.
