Very simple thing to make: a tube, two strings, 4 balls and two magnetics that the string goes through and slides freely. When one side has a "short" string, most of the string is in a loop shape, with the magnet on that string stuck to the magnet on the other string. Pulling on a ball pulls the two magnets to the side that you are pulling on, cause the other side to develop loop of string inside the tube. However, pulling a "top" ball on the side as another simply allows the string to slide through the magnet, having no impact on the position of the magnets that are attached. The only thing that one must be careful about measuring is string length, as when the string is in a loop in the tube, it must be the perfect length to allow contact of the magnets. If you want the ball to be pulled in right to the tube, you also can't make the string too long, but for a quick diy thing (assuming you can find magnets that work with this), ensuring the string will easily be long enough is good enough
