I found a pile of wood chippings from a real tree. I even gathered some of the parts that broke down into finer particles. Would the finer particles count as saw dust or just composted wood chips?

Yes. Cabbage moths decimated my broccoli and cabbage plants so I’m definitely going to use wood chips.

Comments of an animal whisperer: Instead of killing the voles and moles, have a conversation with them (after asking God first) about how to 'humanely/live catch' to relocate them. And/or allow them an area where they are allowed to eat! You may be surprised that they are helping your soil, thus not a threat! As one of God's creatures, like you and me, they have a right to be here also! Blessings!

If I add wood chips on top of my grass with an extensive root system, how long before this degrades and I’m able to plant into my soil?

I have a thick hearty grass - would I put wood chips on top of my grass? Or do I dig up my grass then add wood chips? I have clay like soil… would I need to wait for wood chips to decompose before planting or should I add compost first then wood chips?

Its not private property if God made the moles and voles. Why did he make them ? We take all the land and they get pushed further and further away. I dont think harming them is fair.

Thank you for your time & video. I'm 57, live in Kansas (almost NE). I just found you all & just love this! I started a garden on virgin ground, did the typical method of plowing in fall, put old hay & manure from my dairy cows all winter. Tilled it all in in this spring, planted and mulched heavy with the hay/manure combo. My garden has struggled so bad! I have yet to see my tomato leaves uncurled. Have had to pull cucumbers, beets & onions. Nothing was growing. Later found the guy i get hay from, sprays for weeds on his hay fields. I was so devastated & upset. Allot of money for plant starts & seeds. Sick looking plants & no productions or growth. LOVE this concept and have already put a call into our local tree company for wood chips. I have 7 acres and this is so encouraging for me. I can have them bring loads & let it break down out back for future use. I have sold my 2 dairy cows due to arthritis so have space for future uses of wood chips. I have lot allot of clay in ground so encouraged.

What an enjoyable video the "Back to Eden" is, just found it today - I've always been convinced that we're gardeners at heart and not only because I myself enjoy gardening. I've done mulching for a while but found that the wood-chip method only became a hiding place for our numerous slugs and other pests (I live in the South of Austria where corn for pigs and oil-pumpkin are basically monoculture and I'm convinced that all the pests come to my garden to flee the chemicals and bare soil there :( But what does that leave ME with? Slug-hunting at night, beer-traps that are denied because the veggies taste better and lots of trap-plants that need to be replaced frequently (yet feeds the slugs and helps them be even more fertile and lay eggs underneath a frost-safe layer of mulch). I CAN'T wait for God's eternal kingdom to come <3 <3 <3

I agree, don't give up and keep smothering it! I battles bermuda grass and sour grass in one of the BTE Gardens I installed because I skipped the 4 layers of newspaper smothering step. It came through the cracks of my cardboard. But after raking back the wood chips, applying 4 layers of newspaper and adding compost and wood chips on top AGAIN, it worked! I haven't pulled more than a handful of weeds in three years. Unbelievable how it helped!

My question is about what to do with vine type weeds that spread under the wood chips. I have been using the wood chip gardens for about 10 years. It has been a wonderful change in my garden. I am still stumped by what to do with this spreading cover plant that was here before I moved in. Thank you!

Good question! I had a problem like this with sour grass, it looks like clovers and the roots spread liek spider webs under the cardboard layer and popped through. I had to rake the mulch back, smother then with layers of weed paper of newspaper and reapply the mulch 4-6 inches thick. Now it's completely solved for three years.

How would you deal with the invasive jumping worms?
@danasarahfilms
@danasarahfilms Жыл бұрын
Gardeners: Be on the lookout for jumping worms in soil, potted landscape plants, mulch or compost. If you see soil that looks like coffee grounds or notice unusually jumpy worms in your mulch: Don’t move any material that might be harboring jumping worms. Report any suspected jumping worms. extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/jumping-worms

If I added the wood chips in the fall would the garden do good the next year or does it take more time?
@BacktoEdenGardening
@BacktoEdenGardening 2 жыл бұрын
It is that fast! I have installed dozens of Back to Eden Garden plots and as soon as after the first 3 months I have always had amazing growth. If you want to install and plant immediately we recommend using a layer of compost below the 4-inch wood chip layer to plant in initially or to add organic fertilizer. If you out down wood chips in the fall and wait to plant until spring you shouldn't need supplemental compost or fertilizer in most climates.
