I don't get it... If I slow down the video she goes back and forth between two pitch, but when she actually trills the notes are different. Pls someone tell me, if I go back and forth between a c and an d (1 full tone apart), am I supposed to trill between those two notes, or do a one semitone trill? This is so confusing to me... :')

Marilyn Horne also had to work at hers which she admits when she was talking about Jenny Lind with Sutherland in an interview. So… 🤨

An absolutely sublime performance & of all singers of Bach & Mahler Ferrier perhaps moves me the most. In respect to the Alto Rhapsody Christa Ludwig & Marian Anderson along with Ferrier have given the 3 most memorable interpretations in my experience. Ludwig & Anderson are memorable in Mahler as well, in fact few nowadays can surpass them, IMO.

She's awesome. I wish other western classical singers would emulate her subtle use of vibrato and straight tone singing.

Kathleen Ferrier was just 41 years of age when she died of cancer in 1953(the same year that also saw the passing of legendary Wagnerian bass/baritone Friedrich Schorr).

I think Richard Croft has it all here: great controll and style, beautiful and even voice, impeccable line and pitch, agility that isn't only flawlessly concise, but also eloquent and expressive, powerful enunciation of the words and dramatic attack, as well as the right measure of vulnerability and lyric abandon. As for the staging: Staged oratorios were quite in fashion over a certain period, and here the director obviously invented a narrative arch over the whole "Messiah", so it can't be judged from just this excerpt.
