I look forward to your Saturday uploads, Drea ... always educational and Favorites videos are so fun to watch. I love every time you show your Stromanthe TriColor ... such a statement plant! Question about your Black Velvet jewel alocasia with the corms and fab roots: What is the substrate in that plastic cup? Thanks.

The tall stems on the stromanthe show it’s happy - they are flower stems which get so heavy that in nature they end up horizontal and roots come from the node.

I need to do some repotting since the worst of the summer heat is almost over. I just used up the last of my good potting mix so I need to buy some more. I could try LECA, too, because my husband briefly ventured into indoor gardening several years ago so I have a ton! I’m just not sure how to go about it successfully. I know you did a video on it, but I haven’t been motivated to watch it yet!

Sorry so many comments today, but I am curious about your choice of Leca vs. Pon. I want to transition some of my plants from soil to Leca or Pon, but besides experimenting I am not sure how to decide which are good candidates and which are not. Will have to go back and look at the Leca 101.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 16 сағат бұрын
I chose to try Leca first for several reasons, one it’s been in use longer, two it was cheaper, and three pon was like out of stock everywhere at the time that I decided to start doing semi hydro.

How/why do you use the clear pots/liners? Do you use them as actual pots instead of regular pots? I haven't seen your previous videos discussing this. Could you please link those here?
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 16 сағат бұрын
I use them like nursery pots and then put them inside of decorative cover pots. Main reason for using clear pots is so I can keep an eye on the roots in case anything starts going wrong. I’m pretty sure all the clear pots that I buy on Amazon are linked to my Amazon storefront and that link is in the description of every single video on my channel.

I have a lemon one and it's not doing so well. At first I think it got too much direct sunlight - but otherwise the room is ideal (high humidity, warm). So I brought it downstairs to the living room where it would get medium light. But turns out it's too cold. Now the plant has some leaves that sre permanently closed and the rest do not close at all during the night. I'm gonna bring it back upstairs. I live in Nordic Europe, so the growing conditions are very different to most other world. Like during winter it's -20C and dry air. No sunlight (I have plant lights for this reason). However, come spring and summer the temperatures go up to 35C and the sun is up for approx 18hours a day (not joking btw). It's also extremely high on UV radiation because we are in the north so it doesn't shine high up in the sky but rather directly from the horizon. It's quite a hassle to keep these alive when the conditions go from one extreme to another every year.

Thank you for your video it was very useful! I have a quick question if you don’t mind me asking. Is it better and safer to unwind roots which have recently been watered or to unwind relatively dry roots? I’m struggling with a dilemma all the time.. Same questing with repotting in general. Should I water plants a couple of days before repotting or should I wait until they are on a drier side. 😢 Thank you again!

1. Can you save any leftover spray for next week, possibly in another container? 2. How do you clean the sprayer out? I've had the spray nozzle clog up before and was unable to get it to work again. 3. If you use this on calatheas, do you need to use distilled water or tap water that's been left out for 24 hours? (they hate straight tap water). Thanks. Great thorough video.

Hello Drea! As much as I love your videos, there are some myths and misinformation in this video. 1. Cutting off inflorescences. When a plant goes into the blooming cycle, it undergoes hormonal changes. Cutting off flowers will not encourage it to stop flowering, it won't magically stop the internal biological and hormonal processes that are going on in the plant. By the time you see an inflorescence, the plant already spent a ton of energy on those inflorescences and if you cut them, that energy is lost and it might shock the plant too. Moreover, since it is still in flowering mode, it will often try to make yet another inflorescence, spending even more energy and exacerbating the problem further. By keeping the inflorescences and letting them die out naturally, the plant will then recycle those nutrients. (Source: LariAnn Garner, founder of Aroidia Research Institute, lead hybridizer of many modern popular Alocasia cultivars) 2. You say it's not concerning if a leaf dies as a new one emerges. I'd argue it is a bit concerning because what this means is that the plant is forced to sacrifice an otherwise healthy leaf because it is lacking nutrients. I have a few different alocasias (e.g. black velvet, silver dragon, zebrina, micholitziana, cuprea) and each have 7-8 leaves at the same time. My baby cuprea is pushing its ninth leaf and the oldest one is still standing, happy and healthy. It is not a natural leaf cycle in most cases. This is why many people find themselves in the 2-leaf club. 3. Plant leaf senescence (dying of age) is a real thing but a leaf that's barely a few months old is not dying due to senescence, but due to a lack of nutrients. All of these problems are tied to a lack of nutrients and fertilizing. If your leaves are dying while the plant is flowering, you're 99.9% not fertilizing enough. You need to make up for the energy that is used on blooms, because they will take that energy from leaves otherwise. If your lower leaves are dying and they're not years old, it is because the plant has not enough nutrients. Think about it: there's no biological advantage to killing healthy leaves on which the plant already spent energy and receives energy from, unless the plant is forced to kill them off by poor conditions. It is natural but it's a survival mechanism. I have my alocasias in a mix of 20% peat-based potting soil and the rest is bark, perlite, pumice, coco chips, etc. I'm giving them a ton of light. I have them in very small pots, and at this time of the year, I find myself watering them every 1-2 days. I use full strength fertilizer with each watering (following the label on the bottle), and there are zero signs of any fertilizer burn. People are so afraid of fertilizer burn and so they don't fertilize enough... I love your videos and I know you like to look at things from a scientific perspective, so I hope you don't take this as a criticism! I'm just tired of these alocasia myths, and they are often perpetuated on reddit and other forums by many users who are then giving advice to novice indoor gardeners. Sorry for the very long text! :D And thanks for everything you do!

Hi Drea. I had to have a close up look at that orchid. I've been involved with orchids for many years and never seen a genuine blue phalaenopsis. I think they have some way of injecting blue dye into them but when they bloom again they will be plain white. It's definitely an eye-catching plant but not for me. (Yuk!)

Ive been watching plant videos and seeing people pot up a plant and then proceed to press down extremely hard on the soil mix and you can actually hear the roots crumble crunching. I was always taught to gently tap the pot like you showed.

Epipremnum marble queen will lose most of the white in low light conditions. Most of the variegations on the new leaves is almost only determined by light level, to such an extent that the marble queen and snow queen pothos are exactly the same plant subjected to different levels of light for long periods of time.
