I'm trying this and it's a hell on earth, for now 3 attempts, hours of positioning with different results, second attempt is better sounding then my original position of speakers, but no audio Nirvana, if i lean head to right Jennifer move with me, same with other side, rake angle does nothing, image is still down (speakers almost fall how angle was tilt), In new attempt i can move left speaker anywhere and hear no difference, few inches forward and backward bass sound same to me. And yes i hate that Jennifer song enough 🤣 My guess is i never achieve what Bob says 😪 But still thanks for this guide...

Interesting video. I'm extremely disappointed in the direction that Falcon appear to be heading in, though. Until just recently, MoFi were selling/distributing a "standard" LS3/5a, in a "standard" black finish, produced by Falcon, for a fairly reasonable price ($2k). That distribution deal, for whatever reason, has apparently fallen through though. Very disappointing. What's more disappointing is that Falcon now seem to only be interested in selling "luxury" versions of the LS3/5a, in "luxury" veneers, for an equally luxurious price of almost DOUBLE what the standard MoFi version was selling for. While there are undoubtedly plenty of rich old men (seems to be the target demographic!) who are happy to spend almost $4k on a small pair of speakers, Falcon seem to have completely forgotten about the more "pedestrian" consumer, who just wants a "normal" pair of LS3/5a's in a normal (black!) finish, at a relatively normal price. I wanted a pair for my studio, and black is the only finish that wouldn't look "odd". I also seriously resent being charged double the price for a few tweaks! Aside from anything else, surely a "tweaked" LS3/5a is no longer an LS3/5a!! The entire premise of interchangeabilty has been trampled on! LS3/5a's are supposed to sound the same as each other! Now, maybe I've got (some) of my facts wrong, and I'm certainly not looking to pick a fight with anyone, but I'd be interested to hear what anyone else has to say on this matter. Especially someone from Falcon! I've been using (and repairing!) LS3/5a's since the 80s. Repairing because in the "old days" of 1" VTRs, tape ops would rewind a video tape at full volume and the Sony VTRs didn't mute (or even lower) the audio while the tape was in FF/Rew, so the speakers would be absolutely blasted with a ton of high frequency energy, blowing the tweeters. Many times I would ship off a bunch of blown T27's to KEF in exchange for some new ones! The price was lower if you sent the busted ones back to them 😊 Anyway, point being, I'm very familiar with the "standard" LS3/5a, both Rogers & Spendor, and I really don't need/want an "improved" version (certainly not at twice the price, anyway). So, Falcon, what gives?! Why no "plain black" finish, and why no more "sensibly priced" version? Are you just going for a cash-grab from wealthy foreigners? I imagine this "improved" luxury version no longer meets BBC specs and probably can't even be sold in the UK. That's just a guess, but I think I'm probably right! Happy to be proved wrong, though, and I'd be even happier to hear that the $2k MoFi version was being produced still/again, albeit from a different distributor. In the meantime I've bought a fairly late-production pair of Rogers LS3/5a's, in a pretty horrible teak finish (I guess I could do a vinyl wrap on them?!) but they do appear to be "like new". Having them shipped from England to NYC, and they're not here yet, but I would far rather have bought a new pair in black. Whatever happened to the MoFi deal, I wonder 🤔 Anyway, it's cool that Falcon are still passionate about these speakers, but focussing on rich old men and fancy, exotic veneers is not what this speaker was supposed to be about. It was meant to be a "utilitarian" near-field monitor, for professionals, and most studios want black! At a sensible price. Anyone care to share their thoughts or correct me on any points? If I'm wrong on anything, I'm happy to be educated!

Did the process to Simple setup with lintons in a difficult room. It was night and day difference. This is a must. Now going to do again as all the hardware is new and brokenin. Thank you sir. If not for the distance you would be already sitting here helping with the setup. I will check Dirac after the setup and share my feels.

This is what happens when you create a standard with the industry in mind not the consumer. It seems to have been designed so that streaming providers could claim "hi res lossless" on a lossy product that would save them a ton of bandwidth costs (bear in mind, that while a giant like Netflix can stream 4K HD etc they've achieved this by providing thousands of media servers to ISPs around the world so they can get the content as close as possible to the edge to keep bandwidth costs down). Now that Tidal dropped it and went back to FLAC I guess we've moved on and bandwidth is cheaper than it was 5 years ago. Good riddance MQA.

I smell BS regarding stereo image moving around the room. If speaker positioning is that critical then so is listening position.
@bobrobbins5652
@bobrobbins5652 2 ай бұрын
The speaker positioning is critical as it relates to the listening position on initial setup. After the speakers are working together as a unit, pressurizing the volume of air in the listening environment properly, then , AND ONLY THEN, can you move around the room with no loss of imaging accuracy, ambience retrieval, and ALL the other wonderful things we love about the high fidelity reproduction of music in our home. I know you don't believe me, because you've never experienced it, and your left brained, analytical mind won't let you. But I live with this EVERY DAY I listen to music in my basement, and have for over 20 years. NO BS!

I think Bob is perfectly right with his story, but it’s also about how important the setup is for a certain listener. I’ve got a nice €20.000 hifi setup and a weird room with different listening positions. The sound is ok, no sweet spots or something, but when I go to a live band the music comes from a PA system that isn’t properly setup, most speakers are at the sides of the podium, sometimes hanging at the ceiling etc. Same thing at a theater, concert hall, it isn’t perfect most of the time. But I guess when you have a special listening room with a listening position you can get it perfect like head phones for example, if you take the time to get the right angles of your speakers.

Great seminar! I think listen with your ears and let them determine is the way in the end. But the measuring and all that is really hard to just let go and disregard. I mean the technical aspect is in part some of the fun too. So I think mixing the ears with technical OCD stuff is the middle ground. Tbh I probably couldn't live with having the speakers standing asymmetrical even if I thought and knew it sounded the absolute best. But I could live with the speakers standing symmetrical and still have 95% of the asymmetrical sound quality.
@bobrobbins5652

I agree completely - Many audiophiles have OCD tendencies, and they are difficult to let go of completely. The asymmetrical look is usually very subtle - it isn't blatantly weird looking at all.

I've just bought your guide. Usefull information. I have an openbaffle with full range driver on each and for the moment. Lii audio F-12. Sound excellent. But my bass need boost. Before the configuration do I need to equalize with dsp for best result, or just keep the speaker as it, no equalize . For my right speaker. I have a door behind. Does I need to keep it close or open for the setup ?. My room is almost 13 feet by 10 feet. I use the long side for wide possibility and less side wall reflection. Does it will be a better option to go with the short wall ? This is a small room used for my music, TV and PC and I think if my speaker is too close from listening position then this will be deceiving. I hope I can do excellent result. I'm going to try this tomorrow. Can I wait to place my acoustic panel (absorber) before the setup is done, or the acoustic panel must be there before setup ?
@bobrobbins5652
@bobrobbins5652 5 ай бұрын
I usually recommend waiting until after the set is done before doing DSP. Close the door behind the right speaker 10 X 13 is quite small - Your main focus should be proper tonality and image specificity. Large, expansive sound will be VERY limited just because of room dimensions, Either wall can be used - whichever works for the logistics and use of the room. Put the panel in place first - you should do the set so the room is how it will be when listening.

All right... After a few days of trails and errors I actually got the center locked in. The sensation of the floating head did happened and it has to do with the right size of the mouth, the vocals. In my case was a matter of moving the left speaker a few inches into the room, horizontally

Thank you sir! This is simply the best upgrade to my system. Brought the speakers closer together as you suggested for the slightly warmer sound i wanted and it worked wonderfully. What really did the magic was the rake and toe-in method. The vocals now sing beautifully, and my room is awash in room-filling music. When i close my eyes the speakers melt away. And yes the speaker placement is not perfectly symmetrical.

Rob Watts claims that he is obsessed with getting both the numbers and measurements right. In that case, we should all be asking: What have you been measuring if you claim that we can hear the difference? In other words, you cannot improve upon something unless you can measure it. Even if what he claims (more musicality, depth, timbre, etc.) were true, as an engineer, he must know what contributes to it. Otherwise, he is aiming in the dark every time he designs something new, unless he is deliberately keeping a major secret to himself regarding audio perception that no one has ever decoded thus far, of which I am very skeptical.

I’m going to give this a try, but I’m having a really hard time believing in the method with the lack of explanation and attention paid to the starting seating position since it makes such a profound difference in the end result.
@bobrobbins5652
@bobrobbins5652 8 ай бұрын
Looking back on this , I did neglect mentioning the starting seating position. Most listeners, however, already have their room set up as they are going to use it for listening, and most are unwilling or unable to change the whole layout of the room. This setup technique works for the room AS IT IS, without having to make huge changes in anything, except for the location and positioning of the speakers. Try not to over think it, and go through the proces based on your current listening position - I think you'll be quite pleased with the results.

You are a true professional. This might be the single greatest music related video I've ever seen in my life. I came here to simply learn what MQA actually does, and instead I witnessed a complete bait presentation to an audience of MQA employees and/or "take-it-to-the-grave-ers" who proceeded to attempt to interrupt you and discredit you at every turn, twisting your words, attacking you, turning it from a presentation into a mass manipulation- MQA is literally like the mafia or something, first they use intimidation tactics to start and by the end are outright lying and beating you down to get you to give up. Fuck these people and I'm so glad that now, in 2023, everyone finally knows across the board what was really going on. This got me gassed up for 40 whole minutes. God bless your soul Chris, I hope this didn't fuck with your head and you moved on, and if you didn't I hope you can now because man this is some sick shit these old fucks are doing to force their lies onto the consumer. It would have gone so much farther and would have gotten so much worse if people like you never spoke up and came to the forefront. CHRIS FOREVER!

You wasn’t kidding, ive got a crazy holographic soundstage thats huge, it feels like i could reach out and touch things. imaging is so precise and clean, bass is just right. Ive had my speakers set up pretty good over the years but this is worlds away from what im used to, that soundstage just made me laugh out loud with joy. My speakers are different distances from the front wall by roughly 3” with mild toe in at different angles to each other. Thankyou!!
