Use a pair of tongs to remove the swarf from the lathe instead of hands. That stuff will reef your skin up bad.

If the thread gauge nut is large enough to fit over the center of the tail stock, place it on there before the work piece and it will be ready to check the threads without removing the part from the lathe

How to use an obsolete machine ? Maybe make a video of how to use a commodore computer?

Way more people still use manual mills than Commodore computers..what a strikingly unintelligent comment

That was fascinating ! I just got a big old industrial milling machine and am now looking how to use it. Didn't realize it was an hour long though...2:16 am, oops!

One of the best videos I’ve seen on KZfaq about the lathe and it’s working for the older machines. It is a very cool piece. Thanks for sharing it with us.

It seems that part of the skills then was not to get injured when working. This reminds me of a mechanical engineer who always wear white coveralls when working or inspecting work in the engine room of ships under repair in a dock yard and never once saw his clothes soiled

Went to a vocational high school for Machine Tool. Hated every minute of it. Now, looking back over thirty years, I'm amazed how much I remember. I can smell this video. Especially when the cut starts.

The "jumping" of the drill comes from the taper, wich is NOT "working as a funnel". A drill must be centered by his tip. That taper from the centerdrill just makes him scratching with one cutting edge, so it dances arround. Better to make just a small and short start hole with the center drill.

Make sure at all times your camera is in focus. As it is imposable to see the information you are trying to impart, and blurred shots drive one to distraction. You need to get the basics right!

I had apprentices in my machine shop. I always made sure safety was of paramount importance where i never allowed anyone using a file. Files have contributed to many serious injuries to artisans. The use of a file on a lathe is not allowed by the apprentice board and workman's inspectors in our county.
