As a pdi I'm still very much finding my feet. I joined Facebook and joined local adi group met up for a coffee with a few and now I get a couple of "I know you" waves rather than the general hand up wave.

I'm just a PDI, but When my pupil asks me what should they do in example a or b I ask them what is the safest option? Change speed- slow down or speed up? Change direction- move left move right. Do we go or do we stay. Or we'll review a situation and I'll ask them how could we have made that safer? They might have done a safe thing but could we make it safer by doing it earlier or later? And the great question of "How are you deciding?"

Having sat in on many zoom calls with other pdis I find it crazy that some don't ask questions when given an open forum to a wealth of knowledge when sat with experienced instructors.

I agree. This is something that always suprises me. I wonder if it comes down to being worried that their question might come across as 'stupid'.

@Ordit-trainer I'm sure I've asked many stupid questions, but got a non stupid answer

Also raises good issues to discuss with pupils re the change in dynamic for the overtake . We get into them that they need to get an overtake done promptly if possible . This type of overtake is very different. 1. It remains their responsibility as a driver to make the overtaking decision. ( fir instructors this can be quite a dynamic situation if your pupil has not experienced it before ) . It’s a big ‘what if’ on rural roads and potentially in urban areas where there are riding schools / police horses. 2. Does the rider know you are there ? Any vehicle at low speed is quiet . 3. It will take much longer to complete the overtake , and get to a safe place to move back in. When does that need to be assessed ? Before but also continuously . 3. Due to above another vehicle may approach from ahead possibly at speed whilst the vehicle overtaking the horse is still alongside / achieving a safe distance to move in. This may make an inexperienced driver over react by drifting or swerving in too early. The other oncoming driver won’t want to hit anyone so should react by slowing / stopping….. if they are paying attention! 4. It may become necessary to reassess/ change the overtaking decision ( eg. HGV comes into view on a narrow road .

How do you advise "flagging" the mistake in the first place?
@Ordit-trainer3 ай бұрын
A good question. As much as possible I will try and turn any mistake or fault into a learning opportunity, so we have more of a positive experience instead of a negative one. Depending on the learner and our agreement of the steps towards the goal, I may simply ask the learner how they feel they did. Or how they feel the attempt was. This will allow me to identify if the learner was aware of the fault/mistake in the first place. Other ways to do this could with the learner talking through the process as it happens. They may then verbalise any mistakes/faults without any prompting from us. If it is clear they are not aware of any mistakes/faults, I would bring it to their attention in a way that suits us both. All the best, Tom.

But surely if the pupil and instructor have agreed that the pupil will be responsible for the ‘Looking’ aspect within the ‘Look Assess Decide Act’ routine, making the pupil aware of the upcoming hazards will be seen as over instructing, no?
@Ordit-trainer3 ай бұрын
Good question. It is important to remember that we, the instructor, are ultimately responsible for risk management. If I can prevent a safety critical incident from happening, then I will. Even if the learner and I have agreed they are trying it independently. I should only allow the learner to experiment if the level of risk is low and it can’t be over instruction if they needed the help. I hope this answers your question? All the best, Tom.
