I just discovered this series and I finished A Court of Mist and Fury minutes ago. I made some tea and thought to myself "why did that book affect me so much?" I loved the story, the world etc but it really affected me deeply. Then I realised - I am currently in therapy for my CPTSD and I struggle to get my thoughts together to tell my trauma therapist how I feel. It was like SJM reached into my little brain and helped me thread my thoughts together. I immediately looked up reviews and yours was the first I found. When I tell you I was nodding and tearing up as you spoke! Thank you for this review. I am sorry we have this in common but I am reaching out across the ocean from Scotland to you to let you know that you're not alone. Thank you. I am wishing you love

I have adhd too and I hadn’t wrote anything anything in like almost 1 year and a half…. Because I kept letting my insecurities get the best of me so I never continued my novel and getting to my desk to write on my computer get har at some day…. I think this routine is a good one I might not get up that early though because being outside for a walk at 6 where I am wellll not really great but maybe at 7 am then go on the walk then write …. I will see also I love the whole « do nothing or write » idea but with adhd can be pretty hard
@AlyLourim10 күн бұрын
Good luck! I totally understand. I feel like with adhd the hardest part is starting and everyday I make myself sit there and reread what I wrote 9.9/10 I end up writing. You got this 😉 and I always tell myself if I try for 5 mins and I still can’t get a word out I stop. It’s all about training the brain to show up 🙌🏻

I enjoyed this book on a completely different level, as I used it as an escape rather than reflect in on my own mental health journey. I think of it as self care to sometimes dive into a fantasy world and get lost in something that is just not about me. Nevertheless some quotes spoke directly to my soul. And just after finishing it I begin to realize why. And after viewing your video and your story, I want to read it again, and again, and again. What a book! You are absolutely right, it's a work of art!

So, if you read the Ars Arcanum in the back of the book (they are always written in a way to avoid spoilers in case you want to read them while still near the beginning or the middle of each book), there are 10 "Surges", 10 natural phenomena the people of Roshar believe to be the foundation of how the world works, similar to how we modernly refer to 4 fundamental forces. A person who can control one of these forces in a specific way is then called a "Surgebinder". So Soulcasting, manipulating the Surge of Transformation, also falls under that umbrella term. Now, "Windrunner" and "Lightweaver" are confusing terms, because both are words you could use to describe someone using just one of the Ten Surges (Gravitation and Illumination respectively). In actuality, however, these names refer to two separate orders of Knights Radiant, each if which having had access to two of the 10 surges. For Windrunners and Lightweavers, that includes Windrunning/the Three Lashings and Lightweaving respectively. Lightweavers then also get access to the Surge of Transformation, ie. Soulcasting. I wonder if you can figure out what other orders of Knights Radiant‘s combinations of Surges could have been. :P

I took Shallan drawing these cryptic creatures in the background as a play on the trope of photographs revealing ghosts and spirits invisible to the naked eye. She could not actually see them on a cognitive level, but her memory being photographic picked up on them anyway and translated the image into instructions for her hands to follow. Also, to those who have read the series: yes, my word choice was very intentional lol.

I hate it here so I will go to secret gardens in my mind-Taylor Swift. That’s the best way I can describe my reading life. I tried reading faster but it wasn’t as helpful as I thought. A lot of speed reading is only skimming. Then it just turns reading into a chore I have to do? Instead of a choice if that makes sense. Especially when reading fiction, I like to picture it in my head and get to know the characters. Good reading is more about the fluency instead of the speed. Reading at my own pace is much more enjoyable. Also Middle Earth got me into fantasy too 😊

This particular book was so damn triggering for me in the beginning of it. My previous marriage I was not allowed to go out on my own. He didn’t want to leave the house, especially didn’t want to leave the small town we lived in. I hadn’t seen any of the state I had moved to to be with him. This lasted for 7 years. I left, found someone who was so supportive. I ended up being able to explore and experience way more in 6 months than I ever had in those 7 years. I think it’s important to be reminded that it’s okay to start again and you never have to be stuck with someone or in a situation where you are unhappy.

This has to be the best "Hero's Journey" breakdown I've seen. It's great to hear this as a conversation too which let's a viewer grasp the content easier, perhaps? Best part is that you two discuss the outlined sections with examples of Harry Potter, LOTR, or Star Wars...very handy way of giving the audience some concrete, known, cases where these sections are used! Well done! Be cool to have this type of breakdown for other story types?

I know this is an older video, but I just finished reading this book. I have PTSD, and one of my triggers is the darkness. One quote that really spoke to me was "There are different kinds of darkness. There is the darkness that frightens, the darkness that soothes, the darkness that is restful. There is the darkness of lovers, and the darkness of assassins. It becomes what the bearer wishes it to be, needs it to be. It is not wholly bad or good." It meant so much to have this perspective that not all darkness is bad.

Depression sucks. For Kaladin it can be devoid of reason and consequence, just like real clinical/seasonal depression. It can be frustrating to read because it feels like the math doesn't add up. But that is just not how depression works. And for that, I love it.
@PhilipePXF4 ай бұрын
In all Invested arts (aka Magic in the Cosmere), Intention is one of the parts required to use any of the magic systems. The other components are more varied, tho. But intention is always present, that's why in a specific book you can't force others to give away an important, and specific thing.
@BBS-dl1lt4 ай бұрын
I’ll be super honest rn. The only people that have negative stuff to say about SJM’s depiction of trauma and depression have never truly experienced it themself. Feyre’s psyche in this book is so relatable for everyone who has ever fallen into true clinical depression or has dealt with ptsd before. I’ve actually never read another book that captures the state of mind so well. Parts of it are difficult to read because of how much u see myself on the page. People also tend to have a problem with SJM using training and physical activity to distract yourself and heal as Feyre does in this book and SJM has used in her others books as well. I never understood why people don’t like it though. It’s relatable. Anyone who was an athlete growing up or anyone who’s into fitness understands the cathartic benefits of exerting your body to the limit. It’s a huge help in the healing process. I’m convinced anyone who dislikes this plot point is just insecure about their lack of fitness. You can’t change my mind.
@bubblegumnnebulaАй бұрын
This comment honestly made me laugh. Why does Feyre never experience depression again? If it’s clinical, then she should have depression lows, but she’s fine and dandy for the rest of the series. Why does it suddenly go away when her and Rhysand get together? Why is she triggered by red paint and flowers but not by Mor’s red dress???
@BBS-dl1ltАй бұрын
@@bubblegumnnebulashe’s absolutely not fine for the rest of the series…? What a weird thing to say. ACOFAS is almost entirely about her depression. ACOSF she’s in a depressive state. Most of ACOWAR she’s pretty low, but holding it together for the sake of the war. As for your second point…spoken like someone who doesn’t have and has never dealt with PTSD. No need to say more. Don’t comment on stuff you don’t understand and probably never will.
