Going back to this video because my aunt went in my room and threw out my old palette thinking it was trash. Had the palette for 4 years and was heart broken when I found out

Why not use Paynes gray instead of the black? Never seen “cold black” per se anywhere. Maybe you sell it?

How did you stain a color into the palette?

It happens naturally over time. Just an accumulation of colors and oil after use.

Hmm.... turpentine would be my first choice. In terms of linseed oil, well I refine my own and it takes about 9 months to really refine it down as naturally as I can. Anyway, I take my time and make my own paint from oil I have refined but pigment I have purchased. While my talent is pretty hopeless, I know that there can be no blame on the tools!

No gallery or show will hang your paintings with those toothy things on the back. They will reject your painting even if it is the quality of Rembrandt or Rockwell.

You are very smart, can you do video on Easels? I plan on doing big paintings but have metal tripod one, not sure what to expect after painting on carboards with cotton. I reinforced the bottom of easel so it doesnt slip, but not sure if top will not fall over from brushes pushing it. @@RyanDelgadoArt

Thanks for the video!! I'm transitioning from acrylic to oil but a bit hesitant because of the toxic stuff, and the cleaning part😅 is the master's cleaning tub safe to go down the drain? I live in a studio apartment, and I'm hoping that it's not bad for lungs and our drainage system😢 thank youuuu

This is really an excellent example of a teacher/artist that shares these insights for rising artists. I began my journey 2011 painting from photos taken over many years. As a vocal musician I found Nature a splendid sense of harmony and beauty. Thank you from an 80 year old Rising Artist.

I was in an art store last year browsing and an older lady came in looking for paint thinner and saw the price and asked if she could just go to the hardware store and buy it cheaper. I had to warn her that the hardware store versions, while cheaper are much more harmful and aren't designed for art studio use. I'll admit that I used to use the cheap supermarket turpentine. But I hated painting then, because I hated using it. I now know the right products and practices and no longer have that extremely toxic and stinky product. I did buy a maul stick though. But I'd honestly not do it right and at least I'll have it a long long time. I want some metallic oils, so I'm going to make them myself. I have the pigments for resin art anyway, and realised it was much cheaper to make these myself. I only want them for small highlights anyway.

Things I would not buy again and also regret: Dahle sharpening machine I thought that I could sharpen the pencils with a short cone, unfortunately the machine doesn't do that. The angle is always the same, I just don't get one with a larger angle, only one that looks like it was cut off and is a blunt cone. metal brush washers, these will rust sooner or later. Watercolour paper with a strange texture from 1€ shops, for acrylic they are still OK, but then I also wonder if I can buy other thick paper that is not sold as watercolour paper cheaper. What I only half regret are watercolour pencils, with which I was able to practice applying colour and water separately and had a lot of fun with it and was later able to switch to watercolours. Which I hated before because they were so difficult to control. I thought that's why watercolour is not for me. These have been lying around here unused ever since. I think gouache is better suited for learning how to use water-soluble paints and later switching to watercolour. These are different enough that you would use them later.

Question: For the initial underpainting, I want to be sure and have plenty of binder when I thin that paint. What percentage of paint thinner do you use per paint amount? Or does this matter? If too thin would it not adhere well and cause flaking off later on?

Yes, you definitely don't want too much solvent. What I actually use now is about a 1:1 mix of solvent and walnut oil as my medium for that initial tone on the canvas. Perhaps slightly more solvent. But the addition of oil helps to keep it from breaking up too much, and drying too quickly while I'm working.

my joke answer is that I regret buying high quality expensive brushes, because now I compare all my cheap brushes to them and my college student sized budget has never looked tighter. my real answer is a set of 16 cheap brushes from the dollar store. cheap brushes shed, they don't hold paint, and they don't hold up well to any kind of prolonged use. cheap brushes made the initial learning curve of oil painting so much harder than it needed to be when I could have invested in 3 or 4 affordable brushes and had a much easier time.

Ha! I am an artist and an industrial painter- I clean my brushes using the hardware store mineral spirits, and always use it outside, keeping it in a gallon paint can with a lid, and a screen at the bottom so I can quickly scrub the bristles clean. While painting however, I never use it, I use Gamsol odorless if I use spirits at all in a painting. As far as hangers, the little zinc ones are crap, but they also sell stainless ones that are great, and you need to position them on the inside wall of the frame, not on the back of the frame as you said, that is a silly move indeed. The cheap one you showed has threads too small to hold in any wood, and will pull out easily, look for larger threaded eye hooks. Also, you need to get eye bolts that are proportional to the frame you plan to hang, it makes no sense to buy tiny ones for a 24x18" or 24x30" frame. (Buying those expensive "D" hooks would be nice, but I follow your other rule to not buy things that are overly price for what they truly are...)

If you’re using quality brushes don’t use the cheap cleaner! It leeches the oil out of the natural hair. Just a tip 😊
